The first day of this year was spent in front of TV with Matrix. I have seen the first one before so today I watched the other two. The flat is a mess. But I guess it doesnt have to be clean on the very first day, does it?;) Today Im going to watch Twin Peaks. They start to show it in FIN again. Heard so much about it so have to check it out! Kari even bought a soundtrack few days ago!!

Whats the thing growing in the 9th April picture?? Is it some sort of grass?? Or maybe a herb??

@Simon: it's grass, they grow it here for Easter. A nice table decoration. I was very excited to watch it grow!

Today I was the one responsible to make the work go smooth. Was a bit worried cos as a foreigner I dont feel very self-assured to do that. But it went just fine! Overslept in the morning and Kari had to give me a lift and then pick me up. I have to admit, it was good to have a break from biking ;)
Visited some institutions to prepare papers for my USA visa application. It went faster than I thought. Great!

We went out to have dinner with Jarmo and somehow ended up going from club to club and having a lot of drinks! I havent been out for ages, so around 2am was sooo ready to sleep.. :) We have slent many days at home just resting after our works that it was fun to go out and do sth not typical. All day shopping in Ideapark. I needed sport shoes and clothes for aerobics but ended up buying something I wasnt going to :) I loved the skirt on the dummy so had to try it. And 3 different tops for it. Bought the skirt and 2 of the tops. Ouch! Luckily, I found the shoes (all white - yum!). Now need to look for the sports clothes.. Hope can find sth nice in Hml.. I dont think I have ever tried on so many clothes before! :) Im not really a big lover of shopping :)

A day off! Slept till 12pm and then filled in all the forms I need for an USA visa application. I was quite amazed at what kind of questions I had to answer.. For example, the one in the picture shocked me a bit :) Did not surprise though..
After dealing with the papers I went to town to pay a visa fee (ouch!), make particular pictures for the visa and get a prepaid registered self-addressed envelope. Now Im almost done! Only need to finish one document and that's it. Next week on Wednesday I go to have an interview in Helsinki.
I also finally found clothes for my aerobics. After looking at a number of sport shops, I found what I liked in H&M! Surprise surprise :) Im starting on Monday!
The evening went calm and easy in town, I joined Kari and Jarmo for drinks and dinner.

And dreamt of having a dinner with a queen who didnt like what she was eating and thus was disturbing everybody at the table. Till I finally told her to order sth from "Cili Pica" ! Hmm.. Went to Helsinki early in the morning to apply for the USA visa. I spent two hours in the embassy waiting for a 5min interview. Where I was strongly suspected intending to stay in USA once I get there.. :) It made me feel tense and annoyed for few hours to come. I understand the reasons behind their strictness but.. oh well :) Uneasiness left after I had a great lunch in a Chinese place. The dish was great! I think if I lived in Hki, I would make that restaurant my favourite lunch place:)
The rest of the day went by really fast while I was looking for shoes and some things for my aerobics. Absent-minded me forgot the shoes in the railway station and realized it only 5min before the train had to leave! I ran back to check all the places I stopped at and gladly found them just before the train left.

Laundry blues.. Did nothing all day but laundry:) Our washing machine is not connected and so I do laundry downstairs where I have to sign up for it. Sometimes it's annoying to go up and down the stairs with a bunch of clothes but there also is a dryer so it pays it off.
Kari is in a boat seminar so I am to myself this weekend. Besides laundry I ate a lot and watched TV all the time.. I guess Sunday is the big cleaning day then :p
Can anybody tell me why Im waiting for the weekend so that I can do everything I have no time or energy for during the weekdays and when it's finally here, I do nothing and get stuck on sofa?..

I guess it was meant to happen one day - having a day without a pic. Dunno why it was today. Probably cos I worked two shifts (not planned..) and didnt have a camera with me. When I got home, I just wanted to be with Kari and not wonder what to picture..
It was quite difficult to wake up but it was a gorgeous morning to bike. I like it early. Streets are silent and almost empty. Few cars going to work and few people walking their dogs:) I saw 5 rabbits playing in the field next to work. And one before that crossing the path. The nature is different in Finland. It is not scared to show up :) I have never seen a rabbit in Lithuania even if I lived next to the forest. And here I even saw one in Helsinki centre. Unbelievable! And birds! They are everywhere celebrating spring.
I also noticed a Lithuanian text on a soap dispenser and yeah I was happy because of that!
The evening bike home was magical. I fell in love with Hämeenlinna. The park, water, bridges, tiny blue line of a fading sun in the horizon, the caste, trees, the soft light, boats, pebbles.
Baby brought gifts from the boat trip :p

It was soooo difficult to wake up in the morning.. Funny how I sometimes think that I can switch off the alarm clock, snooze a bit and then wake up on time. I oversleep, of course. And even dare to feel surprised about that.. :p
Morning was very foggy, I could barely see the other side of the river/lake. We had problems with the oven at work so had to wait for it to be fixed. Waiting is the worst part. It makes me even more tired than working. The only thing cheering me up were sowthistles (pienes) behind the jail-like windows and the first butterfly I saw this year.
And THEN! I received one of the biggest surprises ever - Kari booked flights to Barcelona for a week!!!
The shot of the day was taken five minutes after I woke up. Somewhere around 6am.

I had a difficult day at work. So was really glad when it was done. The days are getting much warmer and I feel like snapping everything around :) These wooden things under the tree (Anybody knows what they are called?) always have my attention when Im biking away from work. Cant really say why :)
Spent the evening looking for a hotel in Barcelona and then watching the Eurovision semifinals. I thought Iceland, Gorgia, Andorra and Hungary were the only countries worth going through. I actually liked Hungary, even voted for them :p Probably that's why they did go through! My first ever Eurovision vote..
Wont be able to watch the finals as our neighbours are having an after wedding celebration.

Is Eurovision a big thing in Finland?? In the UK its not really taken seriously and most people think its a bit naff. But one ofmy friends is a bit obsessed with it so we're having a Eurovision party to watch the finals!

@Simon: It's really big this year as it's being held in Helsinki. Otherwise I cant really tell.. I think it's quite a big thing to the new countries as it kinda confirms their status as European countries :p
Nobody I know takes the competition seriously. Neither do I but I have been following it for many years now. I guess it has a sentimental value to me. Reminds of the times when I was a kid and wanted to watch it so much that my dad bought me own little TV so that I would let him watch his own programme in peace:)

Again.. Once you pop you cant stop, right? :p I actually took a few shots in a wedding celebration with somebody's camera so if I get those shots, I will post one as the day pic later.
The celebration went really well, I had a lot of fun and met few new people. It still amazes me how some people have sth that makes me like them immediately. I cant grasp those qualities, but surely one of them is humour. Particular sence of humour I can't really describe but it just clicks! :)
I got drunk and felt quite bad at the end..

We couldnt watch the Eurovision finals but followed the net through the phones in anticipation of results. Finnish were surprised to have Hanna only in place 17. I was surprised that Balcan countries took over Eurovision this year :)

I found out that from May 21st five new summer workers come to the place Im working now. That means they will not need so many "rented" workers. And that means that most of us will have to go. Probably one or two will stay. Now that I am in Barcelona all that week Im afraid it wont be me.. Dont know anything for sure yet. Will see how it is when Im back. Maybe it would be good to change a job. The present place suffocates me sometimes, there is nothing new to learn.
Was very pleasant to find a card from Stan when I got home. A gorgeous b&w panorama of Paris. I think I have seen a similar one on his photostream.
Had a tense evening otherwise. Entertained myself by peeping at the house in front. Bad me I know.

The first day in Barcelona:) The warmth met us once we stepped out of the airplane. Then we saw the palm trees.. :) We were lucky to hail a cab driver who had no idea where our apartment in Allada I Vermell was. But off he drove humming a song and referring to a map in his hand all the time. From the air the town was gorgeous. I especially loved the mountain ridges in the background and Sagrada Familia standing tall in the centre. But it did look a mess from a cab window. So busy and colourful! I couldn’t stop admiring it.
The Allada Apartments are located in a very nice neighbourhood called Born. A lot of colours and plants in the balconies. Small boutique shops. Bad service so far.. The apartment indeed is small but clean and quite well planned. I love the all wall window.
We decided that the first day in town should be relaxing. No sightseeing. Just being and feeling the town. Resting because we woke up early. So off we went to the beach. We knew only the direction so it was exciting to see what we found on the way. And the first thing we found was Parc de la Ciutadella. Then the zoo, the railways, the weirdo building of gas company and sky scrapers. The walk to the beach was quite long and it would have been pleasant if not for my new cute “ballerina” shoes that were hurting my feet like hell. We had to sit down and rest so had ice-cream in the great restaurant next to the beach. Walking in the beach was really beautiful and so fun. I was looking for flat stones and polished glass pieces, while Kari was taking pics. Surprised to see many women taking sun topless.. After the beach we heeded towards La Rambla because I badly needed new shoes. We found them only after few hours of walk. The last minute before the shop closed! :)

We had a plan to wake up at 8am but we only managed to get up at around 12pm.. We really are pleased to have a lively beautiful view from our big window. It did feel claustrophobic in London and Amsterdam with windows facing the walls. Kari made breakfast (with the strange salami we bought..) and we went to explore the town. At first we visited the tourist information, asked some info, bought a map and cards. Then came across the Cathedral’s courtyard with palms, fountain, mandarin tree (!) and geese! After that we just walked in the old city and took a lot of pictures. I like the old houses here, the narrow streets, the plants and bikes in balconies. I have noticed that those houses have very narrow staircases thus Im amazed at how people navigate there with bikes. Oh, and people hang their laundry over the balcony! I bought flip flops because my feet were sweating in the new white shoes.. So, two new pairs from Barcelona! I don’t think I need any more summer shoes! I also came across beads shop and bought some cute turquoise beads.
We went to La Rambla again. Visited Mercat de la Boqueria, a crowded loud amazing market full of fruit, fish and meat stalls. The fruit stalls were my absolute favourite ones as they had so many fruit I haven’t seen before. Couldn’t help it and bought a fruit salad. The day ended up in the Hard Rock Café. At first I was annoyed at its noisiness but then it grew on me and didn’t bother anymore. We waited what seemed ages for the table, good there was a place at the bar where we had drinks.
On the way to the flat we saw a demonstration and a lot of security guys. Dunno what it was all about but the crowd was marching in the streets shouting slogans and stopping traffic. We got lost on the way! I totally lost my sence of direction ;) When we finally got home we rested a lot. I watched Flavour because it was the only programme in English. Then we put warmer clothes and went to have a walk in town. Saw Maria del Mar church, which looked gorgeous at night! The mood was great there as the people talked and had drinks in the outside cafes. Reminded me of Rome. I thought that one might feel helpless in cities like Rome and Barcelona – so much to see and too little time to do that. At least I find it difficult to embrace everything. To relax and open myself to the city.
We walked in Barceloneta and the beach (where I bought a huge cup of after eight ice-cream). Went to bed only around 2am.

Slept very long again.. Left the apartment after 12pm and went straight to the Arc de Triomf where we took metro to Sagrada Familia. We had some trouble with metro tickets because there was absolutely no info in English! But I think the metro system here is good, I had no problem finding my way. We bought 2 day metro tickets from the info kiosk in front of Sagrada Familia and then just before buying the tickets to the church decided not to do that as the waiting time for the elevator inside was 1,5 hour.. Instead we went to see Gaudi’s La Pedrera and Casa Batllo. We didn’t go inside because it was quite expensive. Unusual, yes, but not interesting enough to spend 17e for a ticket.. So we left them for a bunch of more interested tourists and went to placa Espanya. From there we walked to the Montjuic hill. I found it absolutely amazing! There is a bunch of museums, great city views and gorgeous parks. A place so worth visiting. Great for picnics and parties. Kari was interested in its Olympic history. We wanted to take the cable car to the port but it was closed by the time we got there. Good because the price for a lift was something like 10e. Geez! We saw a beautiful dancer next to the Miramar hotel. Oh, and visited Jardi Botanic. I took a lot of flower pictures.

Slept long. Again!!! But we’re on vacation after all!:) Had a plan to visit Sagrada Familia but because of sleeping in we went to Parc Guell instead. It’s quite high on the hill, which I didn’t expect! We took a lot of stairs and escalators to finally get there. The park offered a great view of the city. We visited the three crosses which was the highest spot in the park and then went down to the main entrance where we found a huge terrace full of tourists. It was a great place to relax, have a cider, enjoy the view and admire the broken tile decoration of the terrace. After the park we went down the hill to a metro station. Had lunch on the way in a crappy café with the most terrible toilet I’ve ever seen:) We had a plan to reach the Tibidabo peak but only got half way because the funicular was closed.. Anyway, I really enjoyed climbing the hill. It offered a great view and interesting neighbourhood. I also felt that I’m getting to know the town better. We took a bus to via Laietana and walked to the bus station to ask about buses to Andorra. We had this plan to visit it but then changed our mind. It seems that there is nothing to do except shop and ski. And the round trip takes 6 hours.. We also considered the possibility to visit another town near to Barcelona (Girona, e.g.) but seems like we are sticking to big B :) Had a great dinner in Princesa 23 restaurant. A great service too.

L’Aquarium day! My first time ever to visit aquarium and I enjoyed it immensely! I wish I had visited it as a kid.. Took a bunch of videos and promised to myself that will take my children to places like that. We had lunch in Maremagnum and walked through La Rambla to see El Corte Ingles, which is a big shopping mall in Catalunya square. My favourite place was the food shop. I find it very interesting to check out what kind of products they have in Spain:) The first early evening in the flat. We are both tired and have no energy for a long evening stroll.. Wrote postcards and hope to send them off tomorrow. What I did learn from my trips was never delay sending the postcards ;)

Such a nice and easy day. We saw a lot, got tired but have a happy feeling that the last whole day in Barcelona was spent properly:) We went again to Tibidabo, this time early in the morning (earliest wake up in B!) to be sure that the funicular is running. I think we were the first group to go up the hill. There was not much up there, a restaurant, a little amusement park and a church Sagrat Cor. The church offered great city views. I particularly liked the statues that looked so cool in the city background. We used quite a lot of buses today. I guess they would become our main means of travel if we stayed here longer. Also, we finally went to Sagrada Familia. The elevator was closed (cos it rained in the morning..). I knew that the church was still being built but didn’t expect it to be almost hollow inside! I mean, it’s been 120 years already! I bet it will take another generation for it to be finished. I liked it a lot though.. It appears that the strange columns inside represent trees. Interesting idea! We also visited the museum in the church and found out a few interesting facts about its history. For example, that Gaudi worked on the church for about 40 years, that he is buried there, that he used tiny sachets to measure how much pressure the structures can take, that Nativity façade was built first, that the main tower not built yet will have a giant cross where people can enjoy city views, etc. The thing that surprised us a lot was that the main façade will face residential buildings. Really strange keeping in mind how grand it’s going to be. It deserves to have a huge square in front of it so that people can admire the building. I was joking that by the time the church is ready the buildings in front of it will be demolished.
In the evening we went to have a walk in the Olympic port. The two skyscrapers in the port looked so good that I couldn’t help myself and took a lot of pictures. We saw fireworks from the pier and hoped they were to honour our last night in Barcelona:)
Just before going to hotel we bought a piece of pizza in a café in front of the hotel and OMG how awesome that pizza was! I think, the best I’ve ever tried…

Still ill, but feeling better. Finished arranging Barcelona pics (check the set out - that city is so worth visiting!), cleaned a bit, put up the lovely curtains I brought from the trip and went out to have a walk in the park. Spent the evening watching the last two episodes of Twin Peaks. Watching this TV serie was like reading a good book, I will miss it :)

A Monday off. Im still not sure how my work goes, the agency promised to contact me soon. So. Will wait till tmr late noon and call them myself. Today was a long day at home and I wouldn't want to spend the whole week without work. Cleaned the living room, washed dishes, hopefully found a hotel for San Francisco (waiting for a reply), entertained with internet;), well.. was lazy. It was raining all day long so no urge to go out really :)
Lilacs are in town! Picked one yesterday in the park.

Slept till 2pm. 14 hours straight. I called it a beauty sleep and Kari joked that now I must look like a doll ;) Received a call from agency, they want me to start work from tmr. Feel lazy to go back to work and at the same time glad to earn some money and have sth to do.
Today did laundry, went to shops and planted some herbs and flowers in the evening. Read Laima's blog. It's my third time to find out that my friends have blogs and then spend a lot of time reading the old posts:)

Slept till 2pm.. One more beauty sleep. Was in a hurry to go to work, had no time to do whatever else I had to do. Like eating! Oh well. First day at work after a two weeks break was really looong and tirening. I thought I wont be able to bike back home, everything hurt so much. But hey I did and feel good now. It's soon 2am. I do hope I wake up earlier tmr ;)

Spring snow.

I did wake up 2 hours earlier today! Good girl. I wont have a chance to sleep long tomorrow though, I have a morning shift :) Sorted out laundry and then talked to Laima about literature. It reminded me of uni and all the books I have read and analysed during my studies. Kinda made me miss it :) Went to work with a good mood!
