Follow the Light...

Our age is one of isolation. Perhaps this is a natural reaction to being stuffed in cities, our attentions constantly diverted by the media-rich, technological cocoon in which we live. It is easy to forget – your neighbor, the man behind the ticket counter, the woman at work, the last airport you were in. How can we possibly remember what is not in front of us every day?

Today we do not allow ourselves to forget. Today we do not allow time to triumph. We record. We use the tools of this modern age capture Light, to record one instant of a million, billion possibilities, there to be found, there to be recorded, there to be remembered. This is a great gift. We are the inheritors of a great tradition. Now, finally, here, we can capture the Truth...exciting, isn't it...? :)

Light = Truth

Follow the Light...

Nothing much to report today -- cold and gray outside, with small glimpses of sunshine towards sunset...I grabbed this on the way home on one of the escalators on the RER A, one of the suburban rail-lines here in Paris.

Off to bed for me -- good night everyone!!!

Lost and Found

So, there was the promise of sunshine this morning, but it was still too early to tell. Rain had fallen overnight and everyone looked grumpy. The trains were packed and I was almost knocked over when someone accidentally grabbed my bag. I finally got a seat dropped onto the bench. At the next stop, the man across from me stood up and I saw the above siting there. I quickly grabbed my camera, snapped a frame & then someone sat down!

The rest of the day was not so lucky! Ah, well...

Isa

So Friday was a very stressful day -- I spent all morning in my office working on some documentation for a 15h00 meeting. I am managing my first software configuration project & it is quite a bit different from other projects I have managed. That meeting went well, then one of the participants on the call suggested I dial-in to a second meeting later...at 20h00!!! Ugh...but that call was successful as well & the project has advanced! Then it was off to the apartment of the two Isabelle's (one pictured above :), who were kind enough to invite over seven people Friday night & prepare a wonderful meal! It was very relaxing and very much needed by me! Thank you again, ladies!!!

Green Means Go

I was up at 06h00 and then caught a train from Gare du Nord to Charles de Gaulle airport at 06h30 to meet a colleague arriving from the US. It was pouring when I left the apartment & I had a bad feeling that I was going to be playing tour guide in the rain all day. We were lucky -- it was only pouring down rain every other 10 minutes :) In between, we were able to see some stuff and some more stuff.

The photo above is on the way home for a nap before dinner...Green Means Go... :)

On the way up

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

Into the Light

This was a tough shot -- the light is above the buildings and coming hard into the lens. I was able to mellow-out the flares and pull up the mid-tone contrast to actually see the image :) There was almost no color detail in the original, so I dropped it into a contrasty B&W.

So many beautiful shots. I love the sunset of Chichester - the silhouettes and hints of objects that lie in the black.

And the Poissonière shot is great - the little things that just make you smile :) Paris is great for that; as well as obviously the things on a more grand scale like the shot from the 20th.

Bravo!

Next stop...

Next Stop

So I have been looking for a new compact digital camera, something of high-quality that I can still stuff in my bag and take everywhere. I have been bringing my slr to work, which is fine, but I travel a lot and carry-on rules are getting ridiculous. (You are allowed *one* carry-on bag on flights from the UK.) So, after doing some research and, seeing dolloi's diary, I decided to buy the Ricoh GR-Digital. It is an interesting beast -- 8 MegaPixels, no zoom, but wide angle, f2.4 aperture and it shoots RAW! So far, so good! This was Thursday, leaving the office and on the way home :)

Addendum: something bizarre -- has anyone else had photos shoot up to several thousand views?!??!? This one has a little over 3000 right now...

Back Home

Back home

Day trip to London for a meeting. The Eurostar is a great service & I needed a day out of the office to clear my head & my email backlog :) London was cold and wet, but the trip was worthwhile. I haven't been in central London in quite a few years -- business takes me to the south coast of England & I try to avoid the hassle of traveling through The Big Smoke when possible. But it was good to be back, if only for a short while. London was part of the first international trip I took on my own money back in 1994 -- I absolutely loved it. I don't know about the rest of you, but I associate styles of music or even particular songs with cities of places. New York -- up tempo swing; Vienna -- 2nd Movement, Beethoven's 9th; Tokyo -- Blade Runner soundtrack :) London is the jangly guitar and laidback bass line of Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'...don't know why -- it just fits :)

Lazy Saturday...

Just before midnight

This was the definition of a lazy Saturday -- I was out of the apartment for about 27 minutes to buy: 1. Cheese; 2. Bread; 3. Salad greens. That about sums it up. Huge nap on the couch, a few Star Trek (The Original Series) episodes and then off to bed :)

The photo: I snapped this shortly before midnight looking down the street and towards the 9ème arrondissement. ISO 1250 @ f2. I applied Noise Ninja to smooth out the grain and added a levels layer to bring out the colors.
