it's my birthday on tuesday, so i had a little early celebration with my friends at my favourite sushi bar, and a photo excursion to luna park afterwards.

i haven't had the energy to edit the rest of the photos yet - i'll let you know when the photoset goes up!

birthday flowers from the boy.

i don't notice often enough how beautiful gerberas look from underneath, with their velvety petals bursting forth from their stems.

this is the entrance to downstairs belvoir, at the belvoir street theatre.

i discovered today that on sundays they rent out the space to a church to hold services in. is it me or is that really weird?

my car broke down on the way to work this morning. it was my bad - i ran out of petrol. i was on a main road going at 80 km/h at the time; luckily i managed to turn off the main road onto a little side street. as i stopped the car on the side of the road, i looked up to the corner and lo and behold! there was my primary school - the first school i ever attended in australia. that was almost 20 years ago now - it felt odd to read and remember that old familiar motto.

we're in singapore, hurray!

when we went to board, they couldn't let us pass, and something was mumbled about a seat change. nels was annoyed because he'd checked-in online the day before expressly for the purpose of getting to choose our seats, but it turned out that the flight had been overbooked so we had been upgraded! to business class! the kind with the seats that recline to the point where they're flatbeds! i slept so well and so deep that i dreamt. i've never dreamt on a plane before.

an auspicious start to our holiday, wouldn't you say?

i lived in singapore for 9 years when i was growing up, so the itinerary for holidays there consists mainly of catching up with friends and eating all the foods that i miss. we started last night by going out for supper (a midnight snack, really) with a friend of mine and his girlfriend. the purpose of the meeting was two-fold - for me to eat prata, and for kelvin to get the box of one dozen original glazed krispy kreme donuts that he'd requested i bring from australia for him. oh yes.

anyhoo, today was more of the same. my favourite breakfast, lunch at a yummy vegetarian buffet place with nelson's friends, and dinner with my best friend at a sushi train place that i make a point to visit everytime i'm here.

in between we walked round the city a bit and went to the asian civilisations museum to see this strange little exhibition. the official line is that of a civilisation with advanced technology and sophisticated forms of artistic representation, but we still think aliens were involved. aren't they always?
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Krispy Kreme is in Oz?!

That exhibit sounds amazing--the carvings look almost Polynesian.

ebilflindas: kaya is a kind of jam made of coconut and egg. it's greenish-brown and has a wonderful fragrance thanks to the pandan leaves in it. spread on long pieces of thinly-sliced white bread with a generous amount of butter and grilled to crispy-soft perfection makes it kaya toast. mmmm...

satrina: thank you, lovely!

the bad news is that in a fit of exhaustion, stupidity and bad luck, i accidentally deleted the entire contents of nelson's documents folder. my comeuppance was that all my photos from these 2 days were amongst them.

of good news there are 2 pieces. the first is that nelson didn't kill me. not only did he not kill me, he didn't yell at me or utter one harsh word, and he hasn't disallowed me from using his laptop ever again because here i am writing to you all from a hotel room in hainan island, china. it's not like i needed more proof that he is the best boyfriend and loveliest man in all the world, but i got it - still more proof that he is the best boyfriend and the loveliest man in all the world.

the second piece of good news is that i would like to thank all of you who sent good vibes out into the universe for me, because i got in!!!!!! into the tisch school of art in nyu, that is. i applied to do the masters program in the interactive telecomunications program (itp) at the start of january, and i've been waiting these few months to hear. the thing in february that i asked for crossed fingers for was a telephone interview with the itp admissions officer.

it's a very competitive program and i honestly thought my chances of getting accepted were slim, but ohmygourd i got in!!!!!

the only thing that remains is finding the money to go. maybe i could sell an organ. how much do you think kidneys are worth these days?
*sweet coffee* 11 years ago
Did you already find a buyer for your Kidney? Congrats with your Master Program.

thank you! no, not sold the kidney yet. i'm investigating other options. i'd like to keep it, if possible ;)

haha, thanks! no, the boy is priceless and not for sale! :D

hey, thanks for stopping by! i think it'll work out - i don't think the universe would be so cruel as to have me be accepted and not able to find a way to go..!

ebilflindas Posted 11 years ago. Edited by ebilflindas (member) 11 years ago
Wow, congratulations!
According to Wired* magazine, the price you can get for a kidney depends on which country's black market you're shopping--
Pakistan: $15,000
Iraq: $20,000
Russia: $25,000
Philippines: $35,000-85,000
China: $65,000
Colombia: $80,000
South Africa: $120,000
Turkey: $145,000
It always pays to shop around!

we tried all manner of recovery programs, but nothing. the boy had backed up before our holiday, though, so he had everything on a hard drive at home. phew. i lost my photos but that's a small loss compared to the damage that could've been!

sorry lovelies, i will be back with photos soon!

that's hilarious! thanks for letting know my potential market rate, ebilflindas!

in the 2 times that i'd been to hong kong previously, i'd never made it to lantau island to see the big buddha, so nels took me today. there's a cable car that takes you across in about 20 minutes now, a much more scenic and comfortable journey than the old one, which involved an hour of winding roads in a bus!

05 apr - whee!

nelson's brother and sister-in-law (who kindly put us up) recently bought a wii, which nels and i had never really tried, so we had a go at it before our flight to hainan. it's fantastically immersive and so amusing for spectators. tennis looks even more hilarious. and you really do have to be careful, particularly in small spaces like apartments, because you get so into the swing of things (literally) that you could take someone's eye out!

i liked bowling best. i'm crap at bowling in real life, but on wii i even managed a few strikes! gourd bless the virtual!

we spent our first full day in hainan enjoying the full extent of the wonderful resort we were staying in. i have never experience such decadence in my life, i tell you.

i spent the day getting a massage, swimming for hours, and taking lots of photos of the place. not hard, given how beautifully landscaped it is. more photos of the hotel can be seen starting here.

we went today to nanshan cultural park, which appears to be one big exercise in wheedling the tourist dollar from its visitors. what we really wanted to see the giant guanyin statue they'd recently built - standing at over 200m tall - and fortunately that did not disappoint.

more evidence of how hainan is really malaysia and not china! although this area of haikou was developed by chinese who made their fortunes in south east asia and then returned to hainan, which explains why the buildings look like they could have been taken from a street in a town in malaysia.

this building reminds me alot of the architecture in segamat, a small town in johor where my mother was born and raised.

this is what i came to hainan to do - visit my ancestral home where my grandfather was born.

my parents were in hainan island a couple of weeks before me and had found it - hidden as it was in some small village in wenchang, an hour or so outside of haikou city. my dad had arranged for someone to meet us at the hotel and take us there. it made for a radically different experience to the one my sister and i had originally planned, but i'm glad we went regardless.

i'm glad i saw and experienced hainan for myself, but i can't say i would recommend it as a general tourist destination. not haikou anyway. it's too much like another polluted developing chinese city, growing too quickly and haphazardly to be graceful about it. there is not much here that is beautiful, generally, but if you are looking, you will find the odd thing to make you smile. like these flags.
