How Do You Do?
Hi there! I am accepting the challenge of producing and posting a picture a day, every day of 2007, starting from tomorrow. I hope I can stick to it, and I hope I produce something of interest, to me and to others. I look forward to following many of your stories, too. I've met a few interesting people already, just from reviewing all these stubs. Good luck all my fellow-voyagers.

Straw Hat Swimming

Greek people, in summer, swim in the sea with their sun hats on, even at 8am. Often you see a whole party of them, gossiping in the sea for hours, all with their sunhats on.

Porto Zorro Beach, Zakynthos

Porto Zorro Beach

On Tuesday, after morning duties were over, I gave our guests a short tour of some of the beaches in the south of the island. This picture is from Porto Zorro beach (also called Porto Azzurro), where we had a relaxing bathe and a drink or two.

We then went on to St. Nicholas Beach, and Gerakas Beach, which is one of the major turtle-hatching beaches on the island, where the Caretta-Caretta turtles lay their eggs at the back section of the beach. So, access to the beach is controlled, no-one is allowed on the beach after sunset, and people and umbrellas are permitted only up to 3 meters from the water's edge. Known nesting spots are covered with metal cages.

Navagio Beach, Zakynthos

Navagio

Well, although I favoured this one or this one aesthetically for picture of the day, I suppose the above must be my daily shot today. No trip to Zakynthos is complete without this view.

One of the best-known tourist sights in Zakynthos, if not in the whole of Greece, the Navagio, or shipwreck beach, where a cigarette-smuggling boat ran aground in a winter storm in 1975. The subject of many tourist brochures and posters, it is also a much-photographed Flickr subject. A search for Navagio yields 289 results, while Shipwreck, Zakynthos gives 396 (probably a couple more after I post these). It is also the subject of my most-favourited shot on Flickr.

The beach is accessible by boat, such as Captain Spiros' daily tour from Tsilivi on speedboat Levante, although most photos, like this one, are taken from the specially constructed steel viewing platform, 250 metres up, at the top of the cliff. The white limestone cliffs crumble and disintegrate, which is the reason the wreck is halfway up the beach, it has built up over the years. Also the bright white sand on the sea bottom contributes to the stunning blue colour of the water.

On the way here, we had a light lunch at a cute country taverna overlooking the sea at Marathia, then visited the Keri Lighthouse, with fabulous views of the limestone cliffs of the wild west coast of the island, Porto Limnionas, a rocky cove perfect for a cooling, relaxing swim, and the historic 15-century Monastery of Anafonitria, associated with the island saint, Agios Dionysios.

By the way, happy Independence Day to those of you who celebrate it.

Serbian Family

Serbian Family

After the explosion of the last two days, and travel around the island, our friends departed on the early flight to Athens, and on to Tuscany; I caught up on things around the bar and the month-end results, so didn't take many shots. So I was left with either Ritsa watering the garden, looking miserable, or this lovely Serbian family, sharing an ice cream at the beach. Which is more interesting? The one with the boobs!

I have established that the mother's name is Jasna (or Jasmine), and the little girl is Maria.

You're right. as usual, Mr. CG. They are my favourite ladies on the beach and have a definite charm to them.

Until September, when things calm down a bit, this is normal. Similar routine every day, different people every week.

It seems that everyone likes the shipwreck beach. It certainly is a spectacular sight, although it does get crowded at times. Try getting lost in that crowd, Jissy!

Today I thought about how i've been missing every diary that i used to visit daily. So, i decided that i had to come and visit one of you guys. No matter what the time is, doesn't matter if i'm tired or not, today i have to come and read about at least one of you, so I chose yours.

So, first of all, and before reading any of your entrys, i have to thank you for always coming to read my words and always leave a nice word for me. Thanks a lot for that.

March 5th
I do love that mannequin expression, she makes me smile.

By the way, how come you know so much about flowers and birds? You seem to know the name of them all, it amazes me. This question has been on my mind for so long, and it came again because of the beautiful bird (Sacred Ibis) of March 6th.

The 7th is an absolute FAVE, commented on the picture. Just LOVE it!

Beautiful blossom tree on the 11th. Also loved your reflections at the airport.

You chose well on the 15th, that boat in a very nice sea is wonderful Luckely no big harm with the thiefs and you can fix it easily.

My friend, I know that i said in the beginning of this comment that i would go through your photos today, but i'm already felling on the table. I'll be going to sleep a couple of hours and will be back as soon as i get to my computer tomorrow.

Your photos are always wonderful and the links and storys you write can't be missed. See you tomorrow.

Thanks Loca, you are so sweet, and so thorough.

I cannot claim to be an expert on flowers and birds, but growing up in South Africa, one is always conscious of the richness of nature, memebr of the WildLife Society at school, many holidays in Game Reserves, and a mother who was passionate about gardening. Since settling here in the Mediterranean, I have been surprised an delighted to see so many plants, flowers and herbs which are familiar and which have their origin in the Cape Floristic Kingdom, and transplanted from there all over the world. For example, all the geraniums in the world have their origin in the Cape Peninsula, and there are more unique indigenous species on the small area of Table Mountain than in the entire British Isles.

I have had the pleasure of attending several fascinating lectures by Professor Wim Tijmens, Praefectus Horti Emeritus, University. of Stellenbosch, landscape architect, Botanist and explorer, whose speciality is the origin and spread of species, and his catchphrase is, whenever you are confronted with a new tree or plant, to ask it "What is your name?" and "Where do you come from?". So I use books, Wikipedia and Google to bridge the gaps in my botanical knowledge.

(Sorry about the long answer to a short question).

Cappucino Freddo

Freddo

I had a few errands to run in Zante Town after midday on Monday - computer shop, beauty shop (after-shave balm and moisturizing cream for my sun-ravaged face), after which I had a light lunch at a waterfront taverna (so nice to eat food not prepared in our kitchen, plus I have to wait until after 4pm before our cooks have time to prepare anything for us, customers come first), then moved to the friendly next-door coffeeshop for a nice cool cappucino freddo.

This is a very popular item in Greece in summer (Italy too, probably). Of course, we have café frappé, a Greek invention, which is essentially instant coffee whipped into a froth with the appropriate amount of sugar, with water, ice and milk added. A Freddo, on the other hand, is good espresso coffee (Illy in our case), which of course is made with intense heat under pressure, then cooled down with ice, poured over more ice, and then topped with cold milk froth.

We serve a lot of these at Freddie's Bar in the middle of summer, and hate them, because like childrens' milkshakes, they are very labour-intensive and time-consuming, invariably ordered by very picky and impatient Greek customers at our busiest time of the day.

Fence Erectors

Fence Erectors

A tale of petty village rivalry and jealousy for today's picture.

I unwisely did something yesterday evening, which upset our neighbours, who bear no love for us, and have spent the last seven years constantly trying to undermine us. They retaliated by erecting a fence to separate their section of the promenade from ours, and impede the free flow of people across that area.

Sad people. It does not inconvenience us in the slightest, in fact I welcome it - it might prevent their customers from coming across to use our toilets (the cheek of it), and disposing of their garbage in our rubbish bins (the council has no rubbish receptacles, on a so-called Blue Flag Beach!).

I'd rather have shown you my Hibiscus flower, or the saga of our well, or even Jeanette's ankle, but in the end this was the most interesting, and probably most relevant event of the day. Watch for the New Moon tomorrow.

New Moon Over Tsilivi

New Moon Over Tsilivi

Taken at 03:17 in the morning.

What on earth was I doing up at that time? The Austrians next door were leaving for Vienna via ferry to Venice in the morning, and stayed drinking and chatting until very late. Then I decided to water the grass, the manual way, since our well is out of action, and the automatic irrigation system doesn't work.

While I was doing this, I noticed that the new moon had risen over the mountains of the Pelopponese, ran inside to get my tripod, and here is the result. Full moon should be something, if it continues to rise over there.

wowowow!! what a stunning moon shot.. love the reflection on the calm night sea.

As for you cold cappuccino, we rather have caffè freddo here, or better yet caffè shekerato.. which is basically sweetened coffee, shaken in the cocktail mixer with ice cubes, the way you would chill a martini for example... so it's served with no ice. That's what you'd find here in Rome, anyways...

And Emil, I have decided to have a weekly treatment from Jennifer, to offset the more damaging aspects of our lifestyle (not enough sleep, drinking too much, eating all the wrong stuff), so we have a date every Monday at 11am, a 90 minute full-body treatment, after which, all I want to do is sleep for a few hours, which I shall do once the lunch-time rush is over.

Glad you all liked the wine glass - I thought it might be a bit boring. Anyone look closely enough at the large version to see the photograper reflected in the glass?

CG, I saw lots of coverage of serious fires on the Greek TV news last night, it seems serious. As I commented on your stream, Greece apparently has the largest fleet of firefighting aircraft in Europe, but even so, in some of the recent big fires, Italian and French aircraft were in operation, supporting the effort.

When I drove into Athens a few weeks ago, there was a long line of them flying over Elefsis, picking up water from the Saronic Gulf and flying bck to drop their loads on Mont Parnis, which was burning at the time.

Freddie's Bar, From the Sea

Freddie's Beach Bar

After tidying the beach and collecting our umbrellas each evening, I enjoy my last swim of the day (usually) at about 8.30 or 9pm, a lovely time of the day, with the sunset colours on the water, and the neighbouring island of Kefalonia outlined in pink and grey. This evening, I waded out with my camera to get some water-level shots, and this is the view of the bar a bather would get, about 100 meters out.

Often, after cashing up, after midnight, if it is a hot evening, I will have a final swim by moonlight.

Timely Warning

Timely Warning

With forest fires burning in the mountains of Zakynthos on a blazingly hot and dry day, and devastating fires all over Greece much in the news, a timely warning (in English!), posted on the door of a bank in Zakynthos Town.

The July 17 shot would be good with mayonnaise.

lmao silly girl.. i think Harry Potter went to your head... you have too many spells in that head of yours clouding your vision LOL

I like that you swim late. It's the best time of day on the beach.. when people start to leave and the sun starts to set... and as it fades off below the horizon, you can almost hear it sizzle as it touches the water.... *tzss*

Hey Rob - swooping down to pick up some cool water. Italy was blazing hot (38+) but we pulled up the duvet last night as paris was more pleasantly cooled. Good stuff here...

July 13 wine shot IS great!

Great catching up on your stream, Rob!

The july 18th, the view of the bar from the sea... How cool is that! I take that waves are not an issue, being so close? I wasn't familiar with your neck of the woods so I google earth'd it.. Wow what a beautiful place. Are you in the sheltered harbor part?

July 19... I couldn't help but notice the designer of the poster had a field day with all the different fonts making that... A good warning, indeed. I've been personally involved in fighting forest fires around here- one autumn a forest fire threatened to reach our farm. My brother and I rode thru the burning forests in our 4 wheeler ATV motorcycles like bats out of hell with a chainsaw. What adventures!

Anyway, I think I could use that 90 minute full body massage.. it's been such a busy busy summer, I sure could use one :)

Sorry guys, especially Jallen/Tim, I've been rather busy the last few days, and got behind in my uploading, tagging and describing. Just about there now, so time to update 4 or 5 days of the diary.

Buns would like Agapanthus with lemonade? By all means, the colours would be good, and the mayonnaise would do wonders for the flavour!

Since posting that fire poster on the 19th, we have had serious forest fires continuously in different parts of the island. The heat is extreme, well above 40 degC; when riding around on our motorbike on some of the major roads, the heat gets reflected back in searing waves from the tarmac, like opening the door of a hot oven. It's a relief to get back among the olive groves, to comparatively cooler and shadier conditions (the screeching of the dzidzikia, cicadas, is deafening) and here at the beach, it is a bit cooler, although still more than 40 in the open 37 under our verandah. The cooling summer breeze has been absent for the last week or so. I really feel for the girls in the kitchen, who have to work hardest at the hottest part of the day.

Jallen, there ar no tides as such in the Mediterranean, and in the absence of wind, it is flat calm. When the gales do blow, we get some really impressive waves, and on occasion, I have been cut off for days when travelling from, or back to, the island.

I have geo-tagged a lot of my pictures, see this one as an example of exactly where we are.

Looking Out My Window

Looking Out My Window

I have seen this question posed in several Flickr groups, including this one, I think it was one of the first monthly themes here. "What is the first thing you see when you open your eyes?". Then I was in Athens, but here is what I see from my pillows, when Ritsa has opened the blue wooden shutters of our bedroom - the leaves of the figtrees outside our bedroom, rustling and sighing if there is a breeze, pitter-pattering if it happens to be raining ( a few months to go for that to happen). From the other window, our vine pergola, and neighbouring houses in the distance.

YiaYia Maria Talking to Jacqui

YiaYia on the 'Phone

Not much choice for today, so in the interest of variety and human interest, I offer this picture of my 91-year-old mother-in-law, YiaYia Maria. The poor old thing has not been very well the last few weeks, confusion and dementia clouding her usually-sharp brain. Her eyes have appeared dull and listless, but when she had the opportunity of talking to her granddaughter Jacqui in London, the light came back into her eyes, and I just had to take the picture, to remember her in the good times, when she is well and sharp.

Ready for a Night Out

Ready For a Night Out

Jodie (2nd R) and Jenny (2nd L), are the daughters of a family who have been visiting us since our first year in 2003, and who always make their presence felt and heard, basically very good and very nice people from Nottinghamshire, lots of fun and very vocal. Joe is a cricket fan, and if there is a Test Match on the telly, he can be found at the bar, a pint of Mythos in front of him, watching avidly. Pat is into gossiping and making friends. The girls always bring a friend with them, this year it is Gemma (far L), and gather other friends staying elsewhere. Here they are, all dressed up, and ready to hit the town. There is quite an active night-life in the village.

Pretty Butterfly

Butterfly

I was walking the short distance between the house and the bar, when I saw this beautiful butterfly, stretched out and posing so beautifully on our stone pathway. Perhaps s/he had got her wings wet when we were watering the garden earlier? I grabbed my camera and got this nice nature shot. If La Maquisade is out there, can she help me identify it?
