Buns, why am I ongoingly amazed at your insights? Be they humorous or profound, you've always got something for us that more than just adds to the conversation. Thank you for that.
I suppose $10000.00 might get me to drag a pile of scrap through traffic. Come to think of it, I pretty much do the same thing everyday, except my cargo is much more precious, is more than a pile of scrap, and will be worth more by not putting him through a shredder!

Thank you for reading, LB. And thanks for your insight as an educator. I'm sorry to hear that the situation is not much better where you are. I guess "No Child Left Behind" is a universal disaster. :-\

actually i like the idea of bringing the cars to the accident scene already crushed - it'd be a lot easier to clean up...

I'll Tumbl For Ya

16ozTumblr

On Lifehacker today, I learned about a new blogging service called Tumblr (what is it with dropping that e before the r?). It's kind of a blog-lite kind of service--the analogy being that a if a weblog is a journal, a tumblelog is a scrapbook.

I thought I'd start one cuz it looks so cute, and I'm intrigued by it's simplicity. With the Share on Tumblr bookmarklet, you can grab and post anything off the web--quotes, photos, videos. If you're familiar with VOX, it works similarly, only more openly.

I don't think my tumblelog, 16oz Tumblr take the place of my Blogger weblog, but it might become the scratchpad that leads to more substantial posts on my blog...or not. We'll see...

I don't know, , some might consider this daily photo diary pretty bloggy.

Hey, guess what folks. Yup. I'm on the road again. Right now I'm posting from my Mom's house in Taft, CA. (BunsI thought about you a couple times--once while taking a shot of a Culver City sign, and again while dropping through the Grapevine. And you too, Teresa, as I was driving through 405 traffic, I was kinda hoping I might pull up along side ya!)

Anyways, we're headed for the Bay Area tomorrow (actually, Concord and Walnut Creek) for a wake/funeral. One of the old matriarchs from my Dad's side of the family. It was her time, and now she's no longer suffering. It will be quite a gathering of family I haven't seen in a very long time, so I'm looking forward to that part of it.

We may also venture over to Petaluma on Sunday. I dunno. Keep a look out for me Buns!

Thanks, CG! Let me tell you, that "Friday Getaway" is no joke! We still made it to Taft (near Bakersfield) in about 5 hours, which is norm, but the traffic!

Say, btw, Buns, I didn't mean to skip your question about where on the road that rolling scrap heap was--not where you said. That shot was taken, um, let's see...on the 5 North, just past the Pershing Drive/B street exit, and before the turn-off to 163 North. Can you see that?

You gonna be around? The surfing in Oceanside and the race both make for interesting FlickrMeet opportunities.

No, I was busy wallowing in self-loathing over the weekend LOL - and I try at ALL costs to avoid the 405..... notice how we West Coasters say "the" whatever highway. On the East Coast they just say I was taking I95 or whatever, it isn't "the". and now i go up and see that you didn't refer to "the" maybe it's only an LA thing.... Miss you! Be safe out there on the road!

Sorry, no pics yet. Spending the night in Concord so we wouldn't have to drive thru the night (which I wouldn't mind--I actually prefer it--but it stresses my Mom to no end; and being in a car with my Mom for that long is bad enough, let alone if she's stressed out, too!). Just wanted to reply to my peeps here!

You'll be in San Diego before me! I'd really like to make it up to Oceanside for at least one of those days--great photo ops, I'm sure, besides the opportunity to actually meet a fellow flickrite/MDPDiarist--from across the country no less!

Ah, thanks for the love! I tell ya what, my friend, I'm all for spellin' words all phonics-like, if we're slangin' it up, y'know? I'm down with woulda, coulda, and, shoulda; and even woulduv, coulduv, and shoulduv (but not so much), but (w/c/sh)ould of is such a glaring example of intellectual laziness and grammatical ignorance that I can't abide. And yeah, tumblr no takee comments, yet--I think that's something they're working on, though.

First, love the new icon!
Y'know, sometimes I use "the" before a highway number, sometimes I don't--it's kinda like how I sometimes like to spell color as colour, or favorite as favourite. I totally get what you're saying, though. Another one of those East/West coast things is highway names. I mean, I know we have the Santa Diego Freeway (aka the 405 for the rest of you--which btw doesn't even touch San Diego. I've never understood that one!), but mostly you hear highways referred to by their number. Oh, wait, isn't there one called the Orange Crush? I dunno, maybe I'm just making it all up...

LOL! I know what you mean! I love getting my comments played on shows, but sometimes I imagine other people listening to me talk, circling their hands at the wrist, as if to say, "Spit it out already!"

Absolutely interesting, and I can't wait to upload my photos and share my weekend with you all. Let me just say that I'm sorry to leave--I've spent all weekend visiting with relatives and having such a wonderful time. Although we were all brought together for a funeral, it was a reunion, nonetheless, and this branch of family really gives me a sense of belonging to a clan, that family is much more than just the people you're related to--it's the (overlapping) stories of those people, and the collective history...

My first visit here, I think, although I have seen your comments on many other diary streams. I need to go back to the beginning to get to know you thoroughly, which is what I like to do, but in the meanwhile let me pick up on one theme and say I used to be a blogger, still post occasionally, more often think I should be posting about something but never get around to it; I'm afraid since I discovered Flickr two years ago, blogging has taken a back seat. And since this diary thing started, even my Flickr habits have changed - I am way behind in checking my contacts' photos. This community sucks you in, doesn't it?

I agree about the wisdom and humour of Buns, and agree that if I were driving through LA I would keep an eye out for Bella. I am also something of a grammatical/spelling pedant, and I ALWAYS write colour and favourite, simply the British colonial way I was brought up, although for some reason I write organize, rather than organise.

I don't know if I could handle another blogging project. I have an old Blogger blog, since replaced by my Typepad blog. I also have a Vox blog, that I was using as a photoblog, but have pretty much abandoned.

Then there is this Daily Diary, and Flickr in general. And for a while I was trying out Pixilis, which I have also abandoned.

Too much bandwidth, and too little time to exploit it.

We were late for the Wake; my Mom was quite embarrassed about that. It didn't help that one of her cousins loudly announced our tardiness upon our arrival at the mortuary. That was soon forgotten as we were swept into the wake-cum-reunion. There were some folks there I hadn't seen in 15 years. My son, ever-social, fell right in with his cousins, as I tried to convince some of my cousins that, yes, I did remember them...just not their names!

'tis Spring, indeed

DSC00124

Some of you may remember that I started this year in Seattle, WA, while my son and I were visiting his maternal grandparents. Well, since then, those GPs have moved down to San Francisco, so while we were up in the Bay Area, it behooved us to make sure we got to see "Mimi".

So, we picked her up at her posh new digs in Pacific Heights (which, while probably costing about as much as their house in WA, is probably only about half the size, if that), and dragged her up to Petaluma to brunch with my Tante Berti. While Mimi comes from a large nuclear family (of 11 brothers and sisters), she doesn't have any extended family to speak of, so we like to throw her in with our sprawling clan whenever we can.

If I haven't mentioned it before, quite abundant on my Aunt's farm are the peacocks and guinea fowl; and the male peacocks were rather resplendent with their Spring plumage.

This is my cousin (or is he an uncle?) Tommy, his wife, Stevie, and their son, Thomas Henry--or Tré, as he is Thomas the third. I present to you this photo as this little family unit, to me, represents the beautiful multicultural spectrum that is my Family. What's trippy is when you walk through the room and hear the non-Filipino-looking folks speaking chavacano (the dialect from back home) or heavily accented English.

As I wrote a few days ago, it was such a beautiful gathering. This particular branch of our family really is very tight. As far as I know, it's also the most genealogically researched branch, with anecdotal evidence connecting us to William Penn (how about that Lee?).

Hey look! It's Lee!

DSCF7434

A couple weeks ago, fellow Flickrite/MDPD-er, Leesure informed me that he would be here, in San Diego, for the Ironman event / expo (he wanted me to make sure that the weather would be better than last year, when it was cold and rainy). Well, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet a friend from this group, especially one from across the country, so after I dropped my son off at school, I headed up to Oceanside (about 45 minutes north of San Diego).

When I got there, I just figured I'd walk around until I ran into someone I thought might be him. Upon entering the expo area, I immediately saw the pool you see above, only Lee wasn't there. I walked to the other entrance and there he was, walking in just after a run. I called to him by name and said hello. We shook hands and walked back to the pool, which was actually his booth at the expo. It wasn't until a bit later when he asked, "So were we supposed to talk about something," that I realized that he didn't get who I was yet! I said, "Well, I'm from the Flickr photo diary group," to which he replied, "Oh! Well, you don't have many self-portraits, so I didn't recognize you!"

I hung out there for a while, watching him work his magic on all the Iron-persons walking by--inviting them to go for a swim in his Fastlane Endless Pool. After a bit of coaxing, he finally got me to try it out. What a trip! It was my first time with one of these things--it's like a treadmill for swimming!

I've posted here a picture of Lee demonstrating his product. He got some snaps of me in the pool with my camera (a couple of which you'll find in my stream) and with his. It was really cool meeting someone from the group. Hopefully it becomes a more frequent occurence!

Shadow of Mice Elf

Shadow of Myself

I took this photo after getting home from "Meet the Robinsons". R. was asleep in the car, so I got out to get the front door unlocked--at 50 lbs, it's getting more difficult to do things while carrying his sleeping body. So, yeah, I get out of the car, and I see how sharp my shadow looks against the garage door.

How weird it was to get on the 'pyuter and see that Ali had posted a shadow shot earlier in the day. This funk that's been goin' 'round has been around too long and I want it to be gone. I, too, am feeling like a shadow of myself. Funny that I took that shot there, with my shadow cast against the garage door--it's behind that door that a lot of the funk is anchored. And it was the movie, too. It was cute and fun and uplifting, but the main character is an orphan who wants to meet his Mom. Afterwards, I kept waiting for the dreaded question to come from my boy--who, just before the movie, asked, "Dad, do human babies come from eggs?"

But it never came, just as it never does just when I think it's about to...I'm torn between waiting for him to initiate the conversation, and leading him into the conversation. As for now, when a playmate asks him, "Where's your Mom?" he matter-of-factly replies, "I don't have a Mom," and goes right on playing.

I suppose it doesn't exactly weigh on my mind all that much--just lately it does, what with all the funk I got pile up. And now I feel like I should just shut up and take it, 'cuz tomorrow's gonna come and hit me with, "Oh, you thought things were bad yesterday/last week/last month? Well how 'bout some o' this!" And BAM--

Ok, I probably shouldn't post this late at night. I get so maudlin when I'm tired...

Your cellphone is not a boom box!

Everybody to the Limit

So I was telling you that we went to the movies last night. It was, as most movies are these days, at a big multi-plex in a mall. Which is fine--I never go to the mall (as a matter of public safety), and the movie let out after mall hours, so not many knuckleheads were around. Notice I didn't say not any, but not many. Which isn't really saying anything, since all it takes is a couple shitwits to make me swear off of the general public.

Like I said, we got out of the movie after mall hours, but to take advantage of post-movie traffic, Starbucks and Cinnabon stay open a bit later. While I got a cup of coffee (yes, I do occasionally patronize Starbucks--I actually used to work there, but that's a whole 'nother story. You gotta pick your battles, and I wasn't about to get coffee from the cinnamon bun joint), my friends got some sticky-sweets at Cinnabon. While we sat and enjoyed eachothers company, watching Ren as he ran around in neverending circles, a handful of kids sat at a table next to ours. After a bit, I noticed that the incessant buzzing I was hearing was coming from their group. I looked over and saw that they had a cellphone sitting in the center of the table playing music.

Ok, now I can accept that some people really dig the all-in-one gadgetry, ie the mp3-playing-camera-phone-PDA. But I don't care if you're playing my favourite song (it's free to download!)--it's still gonna sound like shit coming out of your cellphone's loudspeaker! I humoured myself by remembering a young, skinny LL Cool J as he averred his need for his Radio.

Lame*

Y'know, I've had a digital camera now for about 4 or 5 years. I've had a camera-enable mobile phone for a couple. In that time, I've never had the urge, let alone the mere thought, to take a picture of my, uh, stuff--my junks, my bits, my under-carriage. I've had friends snatch their cameras/phones away from me as I perused their photos, not wanting me to see that shot or two taken in a private moment...taken with the digital confidence that no one else will see them.

For some reason, the thought occurred to me today. So out off curiosity, and the desire to be able to say, "Yeah, I've done that," I took some unromantic shots of my Tropic of Capricorn (quick trivia question: What is the only country that is crossed by both the Equator and a tropic?).

DSC00145

That was my reaction. I'll let you decide whether it was a favourable or unfavourable reaction.

* Ok, so that's not exactly how this shot came to be, but it's close enough for US foreign policy, and (I hope) more entertaining than
I almost forgot to take a picture today, so here's my eye...again.
As for the answer to the trivia question, I'm sure one of you brainiacs out there will get it. If not, I'll reveal the answer after 3 incorrect responses. :-)

(How's that for the "family & kids", ?!) ;-)

My son went to a preschool that's close to the beach. Many a morning I would drop him off, and then go down to Seacoast Drive, or whatever it is that runs parallel to the beach. I'd get a cup of coffee, do some reading, do some tai chi, and then just walk along the empty beach. Since it's earlier than most beach-goers like to visit, plus the fact that Imperial Beach is an economically depressed area (so not many tourists) so close to the border (so again, not many tourists), it's the best time for collecting shells. The best part is that you can find soooo many whole sand dollars--they practically litter the tide line. Some of them are still alive, too, I think, as they are covered in a purple "fuzz", and don't feel so brittle.

thanks, Lee. Yeah, I don't think there are to many needles to be found in IB, not on the beach, at least.

And thanks, &

Chucks

Chucks

Me and the Boy have matching Chucks.
I think I have more fun with it than he does.

Does it look like my shoes are on the wrong feet?

LOL, the ever watchful eye of Dad :-P

It does look like your shoes are on the wrong feet. Maybe your feet are just crooked?

I like the shoe shot-- great processing!

Love the last shot -- gritty and grainy -- how else would you capture chucks.... it would make a great poster, and yes your shoes look like they're on the wrong feet.
phone pix of nether-regions......i take the fifth....
the little purple flowers are pretty and prickly looking such vivid color.

Wow Marc. I've always admired your comments on others' threads, and I'm quite pleased to have yours here. Thank you!

Thanks, Daxster. I just double checked my shoes--you'll notice that, for some reason, the right toe cap is clean--and I did, indeed, have them on correctly. Maybe the way I was leaning in order to take the shot (plus trying to knee-hug my squirmy little boy) cause my feet to fall inward slightly, resulting in an odd perspective of my shoes. I dunno.

Thank you, IA. Not much processing other than a little color/sat/contrast tweaking in irfanview.

Y'know, Ms. T, while you can hide behind the fifth, it only makes you look more guilty! ;-) Thanks about the shoe shot--I didn't think it was such a good one, but I'm happy to hear that it does have something! ("It's gotta be the shoes, Michael."
"No, Mars.

Walk on through to the other side...

Spruce Street Foot Bridge

This is one of a few foot bridges over one of many canyons in San Diego, this one being the Spruce Street foot bridge. At the west end of the bridge is a cute little neighborhood, with stairs that lead further down the terraced streets.

Always start with Dessert!

Single Kona to go

Just about every other morning, after leaving my son at school, I walk across the street to an incredible "dessert destination" in San Diego, Karen Krasne's . I don't actually go in for dessert--they open at 8:30am since they do offer some lovely, breakfasty pastries, and also so they can accept walk-in orders for last-minute cake purchasers. I go for the coffee, which for the size/price is comparable to $tarfucks, only far superiour, as each cup of 100% Kona is made to order, extracted from an espresso machine, and topped with the most exquisite crema.

Cliff Notes

Sunset Cliffs

Man, it was super windy today! I might've taken some better shots, but was so much dust and sand in the wind that it was hard to keep our eye open--which makes walking along the cliffs an exercise in anxiety. Plus, the coarse grained sand hurt as it pelted my face!

Anyway, Sunset Cliffs is one of those special places for me. I have so many fond memories attached to this place--and some fond not-quite-memories! Many years ago, an old roommate and I used to hike through there in the middle of the night, either aided by moonlight or lysergically-dialated pupils, and super-charged senses.

I remember one night, we laid in the ice plant, eyes scanning the dark sky for the UFOs we were so sure we would see. What we did see was a veritable parade of people tromping down the trail. (Sunset Cliffs is along the western face of the Point Loma peninsula. The east side of the peninsula is occupied by the Navy, so basically there's only one way in or out. And this line of people was headed in, or toward the point, or into the distance as you look into this photo.) We sat there, unnoticed, until the last of the of them came by, when we asked someone what was going on. He told us they were all heading down to the Earth Pipe--a natural formation in the cliff that can be used as a pipe. Someone loads the "bowl" at the top of the cliff, and lights it for the person down below who "hits" it. Sounded cool, but we were already on our own trip, so we declined the guy's invitation, and went off to continue UFO hunting.

Mandirigmas

DSCF7732

It had been a while since the boy and I had swung the sticks at each other. Our practices never last very long--either he smacks me in the knuckles, or he starts getting all Power Ranger on me, and then I've gotta rein 'im in.
lramiro520 11 years ago
Whoa, an "earth pipe"--that sounds cool! Did you ever go back to try it?

lol...looks like you're gettin' a beat down from your boy...LOL is that a pool stick he's swingin' at you??

The Other Side Of The Fence
ebilflindas 11 years ago
No, I never did--but, considering my recent respiratory nonsense, suckin' on a hole in the dirt just doesn't sound right.

Yeah, it does look like a pool stick in his hand doesn't it? They're escrima sticks, and he really should be using a shorter one!
