I used to run the folding@home app a couple of years ago on another computer, and I ran seti@home on an even older computer.

I need to look into installing folding@ again. Thanks for the reminder.

Merci!
Oh no, my dear. While I do enjoy the saline gargle, this was actually for nasal irrigation, using inadequate tools prior to procuring a neti pot. And mmmm, sexy noodles! ;-) Thanks!
That's funny, because the very same guy I asked if you knew over there in Lex, he's the guy who got me onto F@H team, and he used to do seti@home, too! Check out the link on my post, our team is kickin' butt and rising in the ranks meteorically!

Invisible Boy

Ooh, another one of those tough decision days. Got some shots I was rather happy with, but this one gets posted because Ren likes it, too!
He saw it and said, "I'm invisible!!!"

I got a couple shots on the same street posted some photos from; and some from our neighborhood park. Check 'em out in my Daily Photo Diary Potentials set: MDPDPotentials

Don't we all, ? I remember listening to an episode of This American Life (episode 178), in which people were asked which superpower they would prefer, the power of flight or invisibility. It came down to a pretty philosophical exploration of the implications of those choices. It was a funny, but thought-provoking episode...

Creative Zen V

Ok, so I didn't actually take this photo on the 24th, but I received that little mp3 player that afternoon.

It's a fun little machine that'll hold 4GB of music and photos--two of my favourite diversions! What's amazing is that it's a little bit smaller than my 256MB mp3 player--it's smaller, yet has 16x more memory!

What you see on the screen is the id3 "album" art for Donald Moore's podcast--he's one of the directors of the new Battlestar Galactica series, and he records his commentary as he watches each episode. It gives some interesting insight into the production of one of my absolute favourite television programs--although I never actually watch it on television. The Internets is my DVR.

I (very) occasionally have to remind myself that I'd rather look back on these years happy that I didn't worry so much about a clean house, than look back and regret that I didn't spend more time having fun with my son!

Man, I guess I needed to step away for a few days. Been feeling kinda blah lately...haven't even taken that many photos, let alone log onto flickr.

Perhaps it's a seasonal thing. Not exactly SAD--gods know it's been absolutely gorgeous the last couple days--cold, but crisp and sunny. But the bouncing barometer does have an effect on me, so that might be a little part of it. Mostly it's just Life. I think I caught what you had, Jonatron--it hitched a ride on the Sun and came out West. Guess I just gotta, how did that go? "Hurry hard!"

Thugs, chillin'

Lego thugs

One of my massage clients recently gave in to her inner child and began indulging herself in Lego bricks. It's interesting to see the different design styles between girls and boys--girls tend to build more domestically oriented structures, i.e. houses & corrals; whereas boys tend to put together things that shoot and have jets.

This client of mine, M, started off building the jet-propulsed shooty things, and then built all the little people a house in which to chill. Here we have the thugs of the lot, chillin' out in the backyard. M is one for detail and accuracy, so inside the house is a kitchen, with sink and stove/oven; a bathroom with toilet and shower; a pool; a firepit; and one of the best pieces she's assembled: a barbeque grill. A lot of this stuff is not part of the designs on the Lego packages, so it's really cool to see her build something like a grill out of various parts from different kits.

Bitter

I don't know if I've been feeling bitter, exactly, but this glass conveys the feeling just fine. The other side of the pounder (I call pints "pounders" because they're 16 ounces--get over it, metric-users!) looks like this. Stone is a San Diego brewery with a fine line of beers. The residue in this glass, though, if from chocolate milk.

Just stopping by to catch up! Stone is a fine, fine brewery, although honestly, I haven't tasted too many of their beers. I didn't know they were in San Diego. My favorite west coast brewery is probably Rogue, out of Oregon. Check 'em out if you've never tried 'em!

The year my son was born, before he came to live with me, I was in school (my nth attempt at the college thing...which continues, ongoingly [that one's for you, BG!]). I took a year of American Sign Language (ASL). It was great fun, enlightening, and enriching.

Have you ever tried to uninstall McAfee?! Gawd, it's like trying to get to a pimple on your back--you can reach it, but not enough to give it a good squeeze! Good thing they provide a removal tool on their website--though it took a good bit of Google-ing to discover that they offered it.

To those of you who don't know the pleasure of watching the daily development of a child, it is simply amazing to see the evolution of my son's drawings. St. Patrick's Day 07

Inspired by SSC's Indo-armoire photo

DSCF7306

This bit of Indonesian woodcarving was handed down to me by my Taiji brother, Toby Cooley. The medals hanging around the statue's neck are trophies I won when I competed for a teacher who was more interested in teaching Taiji that looked good, rather than truly studying and developing the practice. While I did learn quite a bit from her, I am much more content practicing my forms in the park for my health, rather than in front of judges for a medal. I do miss the tournament environment, though. Being in the same place with hundreds of other Chinese martial artists is intoxicating, enlivening, enlightening, and just plain fun. So, while I'm not into the competition, I am into the gathering and camaraderie.

Yes eeland...but the medal makes for a nice reminder of the experience. I did my 2nd Ironman last summer. I was undertrained and the weather that had been forecast to be in the low 70's turned out in the high 90's (!). I suffered badly that day and one of the things that kept me going was the thought that I was NOT going to suffer this much and NOT get the medal and t-shirt to prove to myself that I had done it.

That medal hangs proudly in my bedroom while the 1st IM medal (where I finished MUCH more comfortably) is in a drawer.

Coronado/San Diego Bay Ferry

DSCF7359

Well, you've all seen a couple photos taken from the Coronado Bridge, and on the third I gave you a photo of the bridge. This ferry is what the bridge replaced when traffic between the city and North Island made it necessary. There's a whole history of politics, development, and community displacement (and not a small amount of classist-elitism/racism) behind the Bridge, and sometimes I kinda see the reinstatement of the historical ferry as an unintended slap in the face of those who were left shit-outta-luck when the Bridge landed on 'em...But that's Coronado.

Our song for changing vocabulary:
Baby, we can do it
Take the time, do it right
We can do it, baby
On - go - ing - ly!
C'mon, it could work!

Thanks I just messed with the contrast til I thought it looked good. A lot of you put up some tremendous looking B&Ws, so I'm just hoping something rubs off!
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
A trick for the B&Ws. Allow the camera to find it's exposure from the brightest point that you want detailed. This puts the shadows into play. Marc (drainiage) put it right when he commented - the camera is completely full of shadows before we snap the shutter - we erase the shadows with exposure time...keep the time to a minimum (given the brightest point) and you keep the shadows...shadows = contrast and BW is all about contrast and light...in post processing look for a program called "noise ninja" - smooths things out. Now - thats all I know - I've been attending the eelend school of contrast and the frère jacques post processing regime. Keep up the good work.

I drive about 20 miles one way to get my son to school. Not because there aren't any schools in the neighborhood. In fact, the school I attended from kindergarten thru 6th grade is just down the hill from us. I do it because it's a charter school that I've grown to love. It's not a fancy private academy, where tuition can cost as much as college. Actually, tuition is covered by volunteer hours, which I gladly give in addition to the 30-plus-minutes-in-traffic every morning and afternoon. It's an environment that I love having my son in, and teaching philosophy I believe in. You see, here in San Diego, we had a Superintendent of City Schools, for seven years, who did nothing but bully his way through the school system. He was a businessman, and he treated education like a business--one that aims for the bottom line. I suppose he got some results--the kind you get when you cut school staff, budgets, lunch programs, and art/music programs, while funding studies and programs on standardization; the kind of results that get you appointed by the Governator to be California's Secretary of Education.

So, yeah, we make the drive to be in a place that focuses on the children, not on business-driven curricula.

DSCF7378

Often while we're on the road, I wonder at the traffic, and if some of the vehicles on the road at that time couldn't have waited for the morning rush-hour to dwindle, rather than piling on. Like this flat-bed here, carrying a full load of demolished cars. We were traveling north, when I took this photo, and this load of flattened automobiles was heading somewhere away from the numerous junkyards in South and Central San Diego. Maybe it was heading for some sort of recycling plant / slag heap, which I reckon would be a good distance from anyone's 'backyard'; and so being on the road early means getting to the drop-off early. But damn. It's bad enough out there with all the high-stress knuckleheads multi-tasking* in traffic (and if they can afford those cars, can't they at least get a headset for their damn cellphones?!); do we really need to have a stack of already-totaled cars trying to merge with the morning commute?

*Yes, I realize how ridiculous I sound, as one who regularly snaps photos while driving! I just felt the urge to rant about something!
And now I feel better. Thank you.
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
Can you get a headset for your camera ?!? Agree to the max that traffic should be regulated AND AND AND people who have a cell phone their ears should use the special lane just for them - the parking lane ! You get penalties and points here for talking while driving without a hands free...what is that important anyway ??

That truck couldn't have been headed for Cleveland Avenue between 16th and 17th in National City, could it?

I used to haul scrap, back when I was a steel erection contractor. The best prices were from the big places, where you'd drive in, across a scale to get your heavy weight. Then a big-ass mag crane would take your steel in just a couple of lifts for a whole semi. Then, after crossing another scale to get your light weight, you'd continue on to an office that was a huge elevator that would come up or down to your window level and pay you in cash.

By that time, the steel that had been on your truck had gone through a shredder, and up a conveyor belt and onto a ship.

It was a fast operation.

That was back in '74 when we thought prices could not be higher.

But scrap is about $400 a ton, and a truck will hold 25 tons, so what you took the picture of is one big ugly pile of money.

Finally managed to catch up on your diary. so long since I came here that I stood for more then a hour reading your entrys.

Your son looks awesome jumping in the beach. You're feeling better now, aren't you?

About this last entry, you're so right about driving some more just to have your kid in a good school where the curricula is a better one. That's one of the things I really try to do for my kids. You know I'm a teacher and it really worrys me to see that parents don't stop ans think what would be better for their kids, we do need to ~pay attention about their school and what they are learning, otherwise their future would be compromised from the begginning. Here in Portugal education is getting some new laws, and most of it is for worse. I don't understand how the government can pass laws of education based only in money saving. Makes me anxious about my kids future...
