The Noblest Motive... (by You)

Then why do I feel like such shit whenever I have to be there?
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Oh how odd. Last week was Ian's first "real birthday party".. before this one, it was always a bunch of adults who know and adore Ian that would come to his Birthday party.. maybe a handful of older kids- cousins and stuff.

This time around tho, a BUNCH of strangers came over my house, and talked about their kids that I've never seen before...

I don't get to take Ian to school- Merche defaults into that role- she's a teacher in the same school district and all. They go in one direction to school, I go in the complete opposite. Anyway.

The party- It was weird, I mean really WEIRD mix of heathens and holy rollers all together staring at each other trying to find a common ground to talk about. LOL One side would be saying, "So my kid.. he's learning all of the book of John in the bible and is in the Church play..." another would be, "Yah, and my kid just shot a squirrel with a .22 rife, and skinned it herself, and we cooked it, and SHE ATE THE HEAD! I couldn't be more proud!"

Ren is 7 now, isn't he? Just matter of two weeks apart if so.. Ian's bday was the 26th of Sept.

So, did you get your haircut at the Smile Hair? I wonder if it's a pun supposedly to mean "Come & Smile Here" in a weird engrish sort of way.

God I love Engrish. so much fun.. Language is a funny thing.

Anyway, looking sharp there, pal. Let's walk down the street together and see all the ladies swoon! LOL

aww how super cool!! A cupcake birthday cake, that is the cutest idea!!

LMAO... I love that movie, and that line!!! How did you know?

engrish.com?... sounds fun, off to visit it!
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Actually, Tim, Ren is 6--my mom just wanted to put a bunch of candles up (though we couldn't light 'em anyway). At our party, I'd have to say we were mostly Heathen, save for my mom (bless her) who was the only right-winger there. One of the other dads entertained us with stories of Kazakhstan (where he and his family went last year to adopt a little girl), and comparisons with the country as it was portrayed in the Borat movie. As my mom was totally offended by the movie, she quietly made her way away from that conversation.

Yeah, T, it's been a happy birthday, indeed!

Cupcakes mean no plates and forks, Alex! Less to worry about...plus my mom's been dying to use that tiered cupcake stand.
Trading Places was one of the first movies I ever watched when we got our first VCR. I'm always quoting lines from that movie! It's beef jerky time!!!

Never mind Marc, the gardening lady with the shovel is cute, and that is a good-looking garden, I must say. Good school project; I'm sure Loca-Bandoca would approve.

Happy Birthday Ren! Those other kids seem to be in awe of his candle-blowing skills.
friuduric 11 years ago
Happy birthday to Ren! That cupcake stand looks great (but a bit intimidating for blowing out candles -- which is probably why the wind was trying to "help"!)

The soil in your school gardening shot looks pretty dry and clay-ey. Ah, California soil! How I remember breaking my back trying to get some garden beds ready! I keep forgetting how nice Iowa soil really is (interesting tidbit; did you know that the world's deepest and best topsoil is found in two places, Iowa and some place in China.)

Good luck on the continuing job search, and dealing with petty bureaucrats trying to beat you down!

it is an interesting tidbit, Friuduric - and all they can think to put in it is corn?
Dragonhide 11 years ago
*going to Iowa with a pickup for a truckload* our soil in Missouri looks a lot like that. All clay and rocks.

Beef Jerky time... that's the scene with the first Sexy Swedish Babe from my memory... LOL (I hope she was supposed to be Swedish.. cause I might have just offended the real one... heh)
friuduric 11 years ago
Rob, I know! And to make matters worse, the corn grown in Iowa is practically all feed corn, so it isn't even for human consumption! And Tim: If you buy topsoil, it may very well be from Iowa. When housing developments go up, they scrape the topsoil up, bag it, and then sell it. (Grrrrrr.)

But, to unjack this thread, let me just say: Borat. Oh. my. heathen. god. I still can't believe I let the girls talk me into letting them watch it. (But some parts were pretty funny. There was just so much disgustingness to wade through to get to the humor, tho'.)

ebilflindas 11 years ago
Oh, and, no, we're not in any fire danger...at the moment. I don't mean to be overly dramatic, but with how dry it is here, and how strong the wind is blowing, we can't stay too comfortable. My son's school canceled classes today, but this was due more to the air quality than to proximity to the fire. The fires that burned here in Oct. 2003 were closer than the present fire is, but this one feels much more ominous. As I sit here, I can see the tree branches swaying rather vigorously outside and large bits of ash billowing on the wind. I'm getting ready to hose down the backyard just as a precaution...
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Yikes... I heard from my cousin who works at the hospital.. they're hunkered down all ready for the influx of whatever this fire brings.. She's however pretty safe, as her house is on Coronado Island

Stay safe, Emil.

and as for your posts... Such awesome posts, how cool it is how involved you are in your son's school. I bet you're there for the cute teachers as well. ;-) Definitely a bonus. haha

Love those finger cookies... LOL
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Hopefully your cousin won't be too busy treating victims. So far there haven't been too many incidents of injuries or other victims in need of medical attention, besides those having respiratory problems due to the smoke.

I'm able to be as involved as I am because I'm not encumbered by things like a J-O-B. I hear of other kids asking there mothers:
"Mom, why isn't my daddy here a lot like Ren's dad?
'Cuz yo' daddy has a job, kiddo. And yeah, the school's definitely guilty of having teachers who make me wish I was still in school! More importantly, though, is how awesome they all are. Super bonus!

When the finger-cookie-baking mom offered one to me, I said, "Are you giving me the finger?!"

Yeah, I can be pretty quick sometimes.

Big Garden Groundbreaking

bigdig 10-20-2007 4-42-04 PM (by You)

Even though it has yet to be planted, our little garden plot at school is so beautiful. So many parents came to help in whatever way they were able--from raking and shoveling, to constructing raised beds and erecting this fence and two arbors.

We even planted a meyer lemon tree in the front lawn to symbolize the school that has constantly made lemonade out of lemons.

No photo yet today. Just wanted to post a link to a fire map of San Diego County for anyone interested. Ren and I are near the spot on the map labeled "Imperial Beach", so we're not in danger, but due to the Santa Ana winds blowing from the east, we are definitely downwind and getting a lot of smoke. Hopefully the winds die down before we have to think about evacuating.

I liked the pics from school very much, your African violets and the delicate silvery droplets (a fave). As I said over on my thread, I'm watching on CNN scary scenes from Carlsbad, where they are evacuating people. I've been there, so I know it's real close to San Diego. I hope you're well clear of danger. Sadly, most of the people who died in the Greek fires perished in their cars while trying to escape the fires, sometimes unnecessarily (ie the folks who stayed behind survived).
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
stay safe - the fires are even headline news way over here
passing trucks - here it is a bigger fine and more points to pass a car properly on the left but forgettting to signal then for passing on the right - even smaller fine if you go onto the right hand shoulder -even smaller fine if u stop pussying footting around, put up a fake blue light (cops) and make everyone pull over - germany is strange but fun

i am definitely havibg a chapagne tree - and i love the "i like me" drawing - the kid should really start selling t-shirts !!

RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
Good to hear you are safe. And apparently the winds are due to switch to onshore today.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Yes, the onshore breeze is good for us, closer to the shore, but not so good for those battling the blaze. With all attention focused on the western edge of the fire, winds from the west could kick the fires back to east. This happened during the Cedar Fires in 2003--the winds shifted and turned the fire down an unsuspecting canyon, consuming hundreds of homes.

As I said to Ren this morning, at least we can see the sky today.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
[o] Marc If Richard lives where I think he does, he will be quite safe; probably further from any fires than I have been.

*crossing fingers*

My cousin tells me that the media's blowing things out of proportion- 10,000 people at the dome instead of 100,000. But agrees that the air is horrible-

just walking across the parking lot from her car to the clinic she works at, she gets covered with ashes and soot.

This is a bad deal for you guys.. :(
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Hmmm, I don't know, that might've only been one instance. I've been super-plugged into the news/updates via tv, radio, and interweb, and I haven't heard much inflation of numbers in that way. Yes, 10,000 in Qualcomm stadium alone, but over a quarter million had been displaced/evacuated throughout the county.

One annoying thing has been the local public radio broadcasts referring to this as FireStorm 2007 (cue dramatic anthem and over-the-top, FOX-style graphics). The other annoying thing has been the constant mutual public figure masturbation. Yes, all the agencies working in concert has been a HUGE improvement over the response to FireStorm 2003 (aka the Cedar Fires), but quit lubing eachother up and just get to what's important! And last night, Duncan Hunter, Brian Bilbray, and Darryl Issa (congressmen) practically had a three-way during their press conference, so proud of themselves, they were. It made me sick.

Not sure about the fire lilies--what burns, mostly, is the native chapparal, where plants like the laurel sumac have seeds that need the fires to release them from their casings, allowing them to regenerate. A hearty bunch, the native flora; surviving on little water and needing wild fires to assist in propagation sounds like no place for a lily!
There was a little carnival set up in the community park near my son's school. The photo was of one of the rides dismantled and packed up to be moved to the next locale.

It's called a fire lily, botanical name Cyrtanthus ventricosus, and it is part of exactly what you describe, flowering within a week or two of a fire, before the widespread propagation and regeneration of native vegetation. The Fynbos region of the Western Cape of South Africa is exactly equivalent to the chapparal, and also experiences summer fires, which, while often very destructive to human infrastructure, are essential for the propagation of the natural fauna.

Thanks for the link, Rob. When I searched for "fire lily", I found a different variety--called a fire lily for its appearance rather than its environment. C. Ventricosus, however, seems to be endemic to the Fynbos region. From what I've been able to dig up, we have a number of native lilies, but I haven't found any local references to the fascinating fire lily. Of course, from now on I'll be on the look out for them!

Balboa Park, site of the 1915 California-Panama Exposition

fieldtrip 11-7-2007 12-43-25 PM (by You)

It's always a give and take. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.

While our school is now located on an actual school campus, we are no longer right across the street from Balboa Park, where at least 50% of our field trips took place. Even though we had to deal with sharing a mixed-use medical building, crossing a busy street, and encountering the occasional belligerent vagrant, we were always walking distance from a veritable fount of educational adventures. Now we have to drive to most of our field trips, which proves challenging with 40 kids.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve field trip

fieldtrip 11-9-2007 1-56-48 PM (by You)

Because of the recent fires, which closed area schools for a week, we had a couple field trips postponed and rescheduled. Which is why we had two this week.

This photo is of a rather innocuous looking Datura stramonium, aka Jimson Weed, Gypsum Weed, Stink Weed, Loco Weed, Jamestown Weed, Thorn Apple, Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet, Devil's Snare, Devil's Seed, Mad Hatter, Crazy Tea, and Malpitte. Containing hallucinogenic tropane alkaloids, this plant was used by the region's Native American tribes for spiritual purposes. It is one of the few substances that cause true hallucinations, unlike LSD or mushroom which merely distort perception. In more recent history, it's been used by people in search of a cheap, accessible, and powerful high, or trip. Unfortunately, due to its potency and the time it takes for the the body to metabolize it, it is very easy to overdose on the stuff. I knew a guy who had to have his stomach pumped after consuming too much tea made from it.

Oooh, CG, good call -- taj mahal!

Now, about LSD; I don't know how seeing snakes writhing up your arm is simply a distortion of reality, rather than a hallucination!

Unless you were elbow-deep in compost, and had some worms crawling up your arm... ;-)
