What's My Name?

This is my favourite of my three tattoos. I created the basic design--it's a stylization of my name (phonetically) in pre-hispanic filipino script, or alibata (the written language of native Filipinos, like Datu Lapu Lapu, at whose hands Ferdinand Magellan fell when he brought 'civilization' to the 'savages'). And the blades/rays emanating from the circle echo the rays of the Sun on the Philippine flag that "...represent the first eight provinces (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac) that sought independence from Spain and were placed under martial law by the Spaniards at the start of the Philippine Revolution in 1896." The tattoo was inked by my friend, Jo Ann Atwood, when I visited her in NYC at the end of 2001. She now lives in Edmonton, AB, so any of you Canadiens itchin' for some ink and find yourselves in E-ville (as it is affectionately referred to on CBC Radio3), look her up and tell her I sent you!

Such a cool tattoo..

so many cool pictures & stories.. I LOL'd at the Letter S.. how cool is that detail!!

I see your kid has a thing for redheads.. can't blame him. hehehe

ebilflindas 11 years ago
LOL ;-)
sunshinecity Thanks, Alex. Even from across a continent and an ocean, it's reassuring to hear...
Tim Yeah, how the hell did you fall behind here?! ;-) You gots family in town, man, and you're busy trying to coax some satisfying images outta yer phonecam--you're forgiven. :-D

When I shot that Letter 'S', I'd just heard a radio story about a family who did that with their kids--spotting objects in the world that look like letters of the alphabet and photo-ing them. When they put images together to spell their child's teacher's name and framed it, the idea became so popular that they are now filthy rich from it.

yeah, I love that tattoo--actually I love each of my tattoos (3). I designed all of them, with some input from each of the artists, so they are actually my tattoos, y'know?

The boys affinity for redheads is definitely genetic! ;-D

Wasn't that in a movie? Like "Tommy Boy" or something like that?

RobW_ PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by RobW_ (member) 11 years ago
Thanks guys! So that symbol at 9 o'clock, which is either a T or an R, is also the universal sign for f*** off?

Oh, and I like redheads also.
friuduric 11 years ago
No, no, Rob. If the middle finger is up in the air alone and the hand is flipped the other way, *that's* f*** off.

The symbol at 9 o'clock is the universal symbol for "I've got your nose!"

Adventures on Sabbatical

just about everywhere, I think, that's a rude sign.
Dragonhide 11 years ago
hahahaha RobW is right, outside the USA that is. I've nearly gotten myself into BIG trouble in other countries when I communicate via gesturing. That's a story for another time.

The BSL (British Sign Language) sign for "Holiday" is both hands formed as a fist with middle finger out pointing up and the hands moving in a small circle... A hapless interpreter from UK once said to an American Deaf audience..

"So I came here to America to F**K YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!" At least to OUR perspective... Oh that poor lady!

ebilflindas 11 years ago
Ah, stories abound, I'm sure!
My ASL teacher tells a story of an interpreter-to-be signing "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" at a Christmas gathering, but forming the sign for 'town' a bit too imprecisely, which gasps, blushes, and chuckles from the mortified, but amused, audience!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
"Oh Little Vagina of Bethelem"

Oh my.

Dragonhide 11 years ago
Did I guess right? :)
ebilflindas 11 years ago
I'm guessing that mistake is made more often than one would imagine!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
In seventh grade, I had an sign language interpreter in my math class that used the same sign for "triangle"...

She couldn't understand why I smirked and giggled every time the teacher started talking about geometry shapes.

Typical middle school kid. hehe
ebilflindas 11 years ago
How could you NOT chuckle if your teacher kept asking you to determine the perimeter and area of the 'vagina', and then to prove it is a 'vagina'?!

Stopping round to add my own version of hand sign troubles. The OK sign of index finger and thumb joined in the shape of a "O" and the remaining three fingers pointing up like feathers = OK right? When travelling to the middle east you have to be a little more careful - there it means A** H*** - so when asked if my meal is any good...well you can image the rest. So easy to offend, so hard to explain !

Never know what you will find here !

Hah, Ted. I remember here a few years ago a Republican Congressman went to visit Iraq. "Everybody loves us over there!" he said when he came back. How do you know? the journalists asked. "Because whenever I rode around, they were all giving me the thumbs up sign!" he replied.

Except that in Iraq, that sign means [hey! I've got your nose!]

Hi all. I'm waiting to be interviewed for a job, so I'm just sitting here avoiding the lame waiting room magazines. It was a big birthday party weekend (for a couple of Ren's classmates), so I never hot around to uploading/posting. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Hahahaha Ted, exactly. And a Thumbs-Up sign, you know, "All's Good!" is very offensive in the middle east too. My tour guide caught me doing it and scolded me... only then, did I understand why people always seemed so offended when I said "GOOD!" or "THANK YOU!" which I indicate with a THUMBS UP!

*edit* Oh. I just read imperatrix's reply.. yup yep yep!!!!! LOL

Hi Emil! :) Job interview? GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and the number 7 is the same as "the Shocker" (Google it)!

Now I'm sitting in my car, waiting to participate in a computer research study. Yup, you guessed it--Emil is looking for work. Any of you know of any work I might be able to do from my computer? Until my boy's old enough to be a latchkey kid, I want to be with him as much as possible.

Anyway, I'll fill ya'll in on this experiment I'm taking part in--unless the Dept of Defense swears me to secrecy!

I'm a little late, but I've always admired an isosceles triangle. The pitfalls of sign language and gestures! Good luck with the jobhunting Emil.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Ok so the job interview sucked. I guess it was good to do--I haven't had to interview for a job in so long, so it didn't feel super smooth. On top of it all, it was for a marketing and promotions firm--which, in all honesty, is really not my bag, baby.

Yesterday, though, I got paid to sit in front of a computer and hit a button every time I saw a certain graphic pop up on screen. I'll divulge more about that in my post for that day.

Then today, I got a call from one of my massage clients for a spur of the moment session. So, for someone who's looking for a job, I made a good pocketful of cash the last couple days!

What separates us from animals?

Today I participated in a research study funded by and conducted for the Department of Defense. All I had to do was sit in front of a computer monitor and click a button whenever I saw a certain graphic pop up on the screen. Although there was a certain amount of difficulty--the graphic was only slightly different from the other images flashed on the screen--what was being measured was not my accuracy, but the time it took for my attention to start to wane. As dull as the actual test was, the whole study sounds fascinating. The cool part was the other computer/cameras/infrared LEDs that was calibrated to track my eyeballs and their movements.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
btw, because of our limited knowledge of each other, I would like to explain that my participation in the above mentioned research study was not motivated by its funding by, or its purposes for the US Dept. of Defense. Ok, well I was motivated by the funding. When it was made clear to me that the study was for the DoD, I did have a moment of internal conflict--not that I necessarily have anything against the military in general; it's that the results of this study will be used for training and performance purposes in Iraq--a predicament about which I do have qualms.

It must be because I'm unpatriotic, I hate Uh-merka, and I'm abetting the Terrorists by questioning the 'War'. [/sarcasm]

I rationalize my participation, though, by thinking that it does support the troops--that the resultant training will lessen unnecessary deaths, and perhaps lessen the need for so large a presence (the scenario I was given was that of being at the controls of an unmanned aerial vehicle, conducting surveillance along a highway in Iraq).

Oh, and in case you're wondering, I was at no point sworn to secrecy, nor did I have to sign any non-disclosure agreement--so I'm not aiding The Enemy by divulging any secrets. Durka durka!

As I jokingly put it (in order to mask my internal ambivalence--and to poke fun at the ridiculousness of the Cheerleader in Chief):
I'm fighting 'em over here so I don't have to fight 'em over there.
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
That basketball hoop on 17 Sept is a great shot, as is the one of the two party buddies.

I don't think there is anything wrong in your participating in that study.
sunshinecity Posted 11 years ago. Edited by sunshinecity (member) 11 years ago
I wonder what Uh-merka would be like if all the money spent on the war would be invested in a proper national health service....
Considering my friends abroad, who I see getting sick or aging, I'm glad I didn't move. I realize I'm rather lucky...

Sorry... i know it's not the place for this.... just your last post Ebil just gave me some food for thought...
friuduric 11 years ago
The picture of the 23rd is so cute (I have got to find another word to describe your photos of kids!)

I'm with ya on the ambivalence to the study, but remember that sometimes good trickles down to the common folks after DoD studies (think: Tang!!!!!)

I had no idea you were a massage therapist (serves me right for joining the group late, I suppose). Hmmmm, lots of things can be freelance: editing (hah!), office administration, transcription services, ... you might want to do some web surfing (if you haven't already). Freelancing is great when one has young kids -- you are so right. If someone's sick, you don't have to take a day off, but, it is sometimes feast or famine. Good luck!

Marc Thank you for making your visits a virtual ritual! ;-)
Part of me can't wait until Ren has his face buried in a book and cannot be bothered. Y'know, it took me so long to see SE-NSE as sense--I kept seeing it as an acronym. Anyway, yeah, the SE-NSE 'hack' I have on my phone flashes the camera firmware, like I mentioned before. So now, rather than the digital zoom (which we all know is schiesse), the zoom buttons are used for a sort of manual focus. Jealous? My lens clicks, too, though.
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Emil, you'll be allright- you've got a good head on your shoulders, you've got an opposing thumb (a fact I am not so sure of after seeing your thumb gymnastics though)...

The study you particpated in, it's probably going to help the poor saps stay alive. What you did is noble. Now, if you're participating in a study of how to best explode stuff with maximum causalities... That's another thing.

Anyway- I totally love the 22nd.. so primal.. so cool. it's healthy for us all to do that :)
