Day 29, Thursday, April 5
Easter Rainbow
Easter Rainbow

woke up at 1:30 am last night and ran like a maniac to make the fire call - a false alarm at the pines - they must think im crazy - i get so jabbery when we are off on a call - they are all sleepy and dopey and im making jookes - they all figured it would be a false alarm, they are common at the big resort - they didnt have on their helmets or coats even - - when we rolled up i leaned forward to look through and out the front window - and said, "Holy fucks the whole things on fire" - well they didnt think that was funny at all - and on the way home i was saying "well we ll nly be getting up in a couple hours now, might as well just stay and play cards - no one thought that was funny either...

another false alarm today - this one at the hospital - man do i ever sprint'er down the road - hahaha

managed to accomplish nothing today workwise - absolutley nothing - did eat a lot - liz made nice egg sandwiches in the morning - then the judge was by with a plate of huge scallops later today - mmm - mmm - mmm

and tons of choclate aroubd this office - then i went out to bear riover for supper - turkey and all the trimings - hmm hmmm - and came away with plates and bags - after starving all winter it is a bit of a switch - woo hoo

the rainbow popped out this afternoon and i really enjoyed being out in the wind an dclimbing arond looking for a good shot - didnt really find all i wanted but these will do i guess - hahaha - happy easter

i like how the seagulls all shop at the same food market
I was it was at least dark chocolate as it is commonly known that milk chocolate is for babies.

Great shot. :D
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
hey ebil - guess what i learned today - the lower u go, the lower the rainbow goes - im not kidding - and i went to the top of digby and the thing kept getting bigger - no matter how "far" i got from it, it fit just the width of my lens -

i feel like a freegan - he buys everything that is on sale or marked down - and i eat it - hahaha

hey BG - it was so beautiful in real life - i was trying to breathe bewreen snapping and soak it up

GD - best haddock in town there, so im told - never been - cause the line of seagulls is always so long

"I was it was" didnt follow - the chocolate is all pretty much baby chocolate in this offfice - some of it is even that white lindt's stuff - lots o candy here
I meant "I hope it was..."
And you are talking about my typos? Ha!

Day 30, Good Friday, April 6

Some reporters chase fire trucks - I climb in them - hahaha

no joke - Thursday night I was just writing a letter to my mother (not to be confused with Mom) - she worries a little about the fire fighting - here's an exceprt from the letter:
Don't worry about the fire fighting - No fires for a month now... Not even grass fires – jumped out of bed at 1:30 last night for a false alarm at pines and another today about 3 pm at hospital – which the other fire men took as the beginning of happy hour – not me –
that's when the pager went off - exactly midnight

i was out the door before the page had finished - all i heard was roxville and possible structure fire - i was first to the hall and dressed before the next guy came in the door - we were only ten minutes getting to roxville from the time of the page - in a fire pumper - justin had her flat out but the governors keep her at 100 - darn

jamie and darren put on thier BA's while we rolled - i am not confident enough yet - but soon - i actualy cant wait - my only fear is letting the guys down
just a wee house - and not a big fire - it would have been a good first one except ryan said it was the most challenging hed been in because of clutter - wanna read my NovaNewsNow story - wrote it before i went to sleep - the first two fires i wrote up in a very impersonal just the facts ma'am kind of style but this one i tried a little something different - i LIKE it - ahahah

i was a little busy with errands and hauling hose but not much - we had 20 guys and only ran two lines - what we needed was more BA crews - so id like to get up to speed there -

of course outisde might be better for fotos - we had a jerry springer episode on the front lawn - two women - obvioulsy stoned came running trying to get inside the house - the firemen held them back and then was a bit of rolling around in the lawn and screaming - i ddint photog any of that - but i did get some good shots in side after the fire was knocked down and the smoke vented - shuldnt really be in there without the BA - air is still full of steam and particulates - but the shots were irressitable -

the fires revv me up eh -
napped from 6 am until 10:30 when our local MLA woke me up - for a photo shoot we had planned a while ago - and he gave me a tip about a story - so took a drive out to ashmore to talk with johnny thibault - what a story teller - the man has fallen off a fishing boat 5 times - cant swim a lick - the last time he got his foot caught in a drag - a drag is a big weighted net designed to sink right to the bottom - i said johnny what were u thinking
"wasnt thinkin nawthin"

the captain threw the boat ahead full speed and hauled johnny back up by his foot - he also talks about standing on bottom one time with big fronds of seaweed 10 - 12 feet high waving all around him
"I said to myself you're in the wrong place here"
hahahaha - im going back to tape some of these stories - he is a wild man

did a whale of writing until about 8 pm and then ...made a dash for HFX - sposed to be on call - but i knew john was still in town - shhhh

ffun drive down the dark 101 - a little fast but fun - big crowd at eric and carols - great night - flip cups - lost again but it is more abut having fun anyway - hahahaha - our team (usually hippy jeff carol me colin) has more than anyone guaranteed - hahaha - the brownies helped - so much better for my lungs - hahaha

sang some songs - throat very dry from fire - played guitar til very late - colin was making up songs left and right - quote of the night was a verse he wrote
"that what which you can't refuse" - he and i laughed for about 10 minutes flat out - we laughed A LOT - which feels goood
fell asleep watching baraka - love it - never seen the end - hahaha

another jonestown morning - im always like the guy who didnt swallow the kool aid and tip toes out in the morning - raced my hangover to digby - it never really caught up to me - met junior to go help some people cut split and stack firewood for an old fellow - a dozen of us - i dont even know the guy we were doing it for - the opportunity came to help and i greedliy thought about the great exercise - nothing like piling wood - i love the look of a big wood pile - it's like $ in the bank

came home and slept all day - hahahaha - so mmuch for work - well, i better go get a photo for today...
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Do the Digby Courier readers realize how cool it is that they get first hand accounts from a firefighting journalist?!

Johnny T. sounds like someone the Discovery Channel could do a special on--they've already made a series about crabbers up in Alaska.

Mmm, *brownies*...and Baraka! Love it! And the J-town reference--LOL!
My brother-in-law was a firefighter at one time. He was married to my eldest sister Kathie, who died about two years ago from what we think was heart failure. She had been in poor health for quite a while and never really took very good care of herself. Her husband, Dave, became terribly despondent. He also wasn't taking very good care of himself. As a firefighter, he was on disability due to a crushed foot after an accident. I loved my sister dearly and grieved for her the way a sister does. Dave loved her dearly too and kept grieving and grieving growing more and more depressed. He was found dead in a hotel room a few days ago--we are not 100% certain but we believe it was suicide.

Firefighting is a noble thing. Take very good care of yourself my friend and don't forget to sleep.

Big hugs.

Ha! that reminds me of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon, where he paints Elmer Fudd's head to look like an Easter egg, and that crazy kid keeps chasing Elmer around, yelling, "I WANNA EASTER EGG! I WANNA EASTER EGG! I WANNA EASTER EGG!"

I hope you left that one there for the kids, J'walker!

good questions kids! i think it is a conspiracy - seriously though - it is kinda like the calendar is a month behind - this was the kind of dump we usually get in march -

now to other matters
decided not to drive to windsor after getting weather report and a phone call from the judge asking me to dinner - figured id save the 4 hours of driving and spend some time with my grandparents

so iamgine my surprise when he wasnt home - shirley says he went in town to watch the masters - hahahahaha - okay then - i shovelled the driveway and filled the wood box and then had soup and scallops and blueb pie with my grandmother - i always treasure the time we get alone - she is so quiet and kind

sara called to finish a conversation they werent able to finish earlier so i did the dishes and then curled up on the couch for 45 minutes - very refreshing - been trying to write here - accch- stupid little things to finish up - snow melting fast
What a pleasant day that sounded like. Snow in April. All we get is fog and wind--and that is typical almost everyday weather.
Today when I tried to shoot photos of swallows in flight I could hardly hold my camera the wind was blowing so hard.

Did your grandma remember to save me a piece of blueberry pie? Yum.
Course you must know that I bake the best apple pie on the planet.

Day 33, Monday, April 9
Another humdrum office day
another day, another assault

nothing new here really
started the new coffee - radical blend - very nice -maybe too much coffee for me - hahaha - the stuff JB brought from mexico was way toooo much coffee for me - i felt every day like i was being prepared for some kind of aztec sacrifice ( i hope that wasnt politically incorrect - was it?)
big drag yesterday was that the people whose house burned wanted the interior photos removed from the webpage - okay :(
had a chimney fire yesterday - but actually it was just a blocked stove pipe - since it was easter monday we all got double time for that call - a whole $1.80 a day - hahahaha
on other good news - i hear word of a senior mens soccer team here this summer - super woohoo!
slept a lot last night - also watched diane lane in the movie about george reeves - old hollywood - 1/2 way through i caught a glimpse of her as an old lady - nope - turned it off and took it back - i didnt pay $4 to see her get old - she will never get old - sorry - nope - im plugging my ears - nanananananana - i cant hear you - immortal - ageless - a goddess - nananananana
She's had way too much coffee.

UFO abduction
UFO tentacle

Today a UFO came down from space, suckd me up in its long red tentacle and abducted me...
honest... did too
if my boss asks why no work accomplished today, that's my story
what did i do today?
i learned the guitar chords to Oodeladdy - from Disney's Robin Hood and Not in Nottingham - (Roger Miller tunes - yay )

had a false alarm at the hospital again today, then jeff and i got on speaker phone together and got the DFD webpage worked out - and ... im making up stuff now - oh yeah, relay pump training tonight - nothing new for me cause im used to handling a big hose - hahahaha
sooo untrue

JB called today - stoked from hiking and skiiing at wentworth - says he has photos on his Facebook - which heretofore ive been excluded from on the grounds i am a parent but it seems his network is working on an exmeption for me based on my ultracoolnes factor

these are all jokes people - honestly i spent the day in an alien space craft - am looking at cutting back on the coffee - but it is like a runaway train - the girls are off to y'mth tomorrow early for meetings BUT they insisted i come in for 7:30 just to make them coffee before they leave -
is there a CAA?

oh no... they're coming again for me... it's the tentacle --oh no - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

mini AM update - dragged myself into work by fngernails - soooo tired this AM?? to make coffee for the ladies and then the pager went off - chimney fire in roxville - right next door to the last place we were at - guess we're doing the strip -

somehow found myself climbing up on top of the chimney itself - half way up i remembered my sprained arm - hahahaha - the biggest drawback of being the guy who likes to jump in first like that - hard to take pictures of yourself hanging on to the stove pipe with one haand and the hose with the other, holding your breath with steam and smoke in your face - hahahah

u know i lovvvve it - tonight is floor hockey - we'll see if those photos (im hoping for blood - hahaha) turn out better than these

Day 35, Wednesday, April 11
Annapolis Basin Paddling in April

April on the Annapolis Basin

Quite an eventful day - note the snow - note the water temp - 1.6 degrees - note the wind and say yeehaw

long rich day - stick with me now - ive already updated above - early early coffee - chimney fire - lunch with chris - grandfather - geramn baker - they just talk - they dont actually dance - except the tallk is a dance of it s own - when they dance, i wil post - u will see

paddling with chris - put in in deep brook and headed up wind to bear island - sadly ironic name? no bears anyway - tough slog up wind - rough passage for me - fun chalenging - woohoo
quick run around on island - first time there - great new view in digy and smiths cove and everywhere - woohoo

padding home was the BEST - surfing the waves - feels like th whol euniverse loves ya when the boat goes scooting down these waves and then u catch the next one - oh yeah baby - fun

landed exhausted and cold - supper at the lockyers' always entertaning and yummy - back in town in time for floor hckey

i ahv eonly one gear - stupidly fast - used to be ok when i was fit - man that was fun - run run run - took me a while to remember stuff - for my body to remember stuff - and for my mind to remeber my attitude - cant wait til next time :)

exhausted - thak you yes - and because i laughed at adrien (when he fell from his own slap shot wind up) i did exaclty the same thing and smashed my knee - so now my left arm is sore again and twisted outwards again, my left knee is bruised bad and a tooth is loose on left - does all that left gimpiness mean something?

fun night - now, at lucnh when the judge was here, he bought some lovely looking black forest cake - but i couldnt have any cause i had to run out to a photo shoot - and when i came back he was gone - ... and more importantly so was the cake - all day i lamneted taht unitl i was limping up to my apt at 10 pm - and laughed and laughed - oh poor jonathan - such a sad life - he didnt get any cake - hahahahahahaha

Day 36, Thursday, April 12
Closer look
looks good
woke up early - got to see some cool shit - in fact, i saw a lot of stuff more clearly today - something huge is close to exploding here - lots of other little stuff has conversely settled into more realistic perspective

lets get into'r (as the judge says - moving from the general to the particular)

a cold night heavy frost decorated the admirals walk - and i thought i had a great pho to for my diary and was done - but no, there was more

taking advantage of the early tide, the crew at tidal boat works were bringing a boat up on the slips - i put a whole set together so you can see the whole process - makes for a fun slide show actually to watch it happen
as the baot came out of the water, i could here them all say "Not hard to see the problem" - when nicole saw that photo, she had to go to the little girls room - hahaha - again - too much coffee

so watched the boat being hauled up and enjoyd the morning - i. love. my. life
only took maybe 15 minutes - they measure the stern ropes to make sure she is in the middle and over the blocks and then a man on shore who runs the winch aligns the bow by sight and hand signals

in the office i got to making coffee and doing dishes - cinderella cinderella - hahaha - john and nicole were acting and talking weird about "i know something" - and our manger did stop in after lunch - with letters to be signed and new work cameras - must everythinh here be a joke?
my heavens - kodak z650 - havnt had a chance to run her through her paces yet - this weekend for sure - much planned - hahaha - and im sure much unplanned will also happen - all depends on how big the explosion is - hahaha

oh and the leters - this is so great - i signed a letter " certifying i had been informed of the change in my pay situation" - a raise - yes - now i ahve lamented here before that i dont really get paid enough - i am POOR. so i talked to my manager in november re: raise and he put me off with - there i something in the works,a pay equity process for all employees across the country - we'll see after that how u feel - so i waited - thinking that i love it here and that maybe they'd offer me something half liveable so i could stay a cple yeers

so how much was my raise? a hugemongous 18 cents an hour - retro back to christmas i got a whopping extra $70 after tax on this last pay cheque - i dont take it personally - it is all just a numbers game for the accoutants but if u wanted to insult someone, that is really a good way to do it - retarded

the only thing that bothers me is my manager suggesting i wait and see what the pay equity brings - wait 5 months for 18 cents - i just wish more info had been given to me 5 months ago - which is the good news now - now i know - now i can see clearly the reality of the situation - i love my life here but money wise it is impossible - so now this job becomes my part time duty and my full time job is landing something with money - hahahaha

also was freting about missing a course with fire dept - really ewanted to take it - but two reaons not too - one my son has called me more in the last week than in the march february and january combined - he is very anxious for me to ski with him this weekend (should be fun hiking up and slogging down in corn snow with my bum knee - i have been crippled this whole year so far - hahahaha - and loving it - hahaha)

but i was confused til it really sunk in there is nothing more importatn than him and if he wants me im going - im gone - see ya- the rest is silly - as someone used to say - sing every request - you never know when youll gert another - he is very stoked and im stoked to see him again - i ahve a few presetns - the judge bought himn a spinning top - yes he is 17 and his great granadfather bought him a top - hahaha - and two model airplanes - and i ahve the best surpise - cant mention it in case he is reading

also saw how acutely a friend of mine is suffering and offered alll the help i had - and the clarity of the cake incident from yesterday prevades my whole day lately - sigghhhh of contentment

as a courier team we put together what i think is a knock out cover for the Visitors Guide - frineds can see it i think - it is a whole pile of cliches but a step above the cliches they normally use here - hahaha

day was kinda shot by pay raise news - weirdest week since ive been in Digby - end of day thursday and not one story or interview or photo for work - nothing - nothing - usually thursday the panic starts - nope - not even panciking yet thoough im gonna have to sta up all night to fit everything in to this weekend - hahahaha

was hungry and contemplating supper when i got an email from my grandmother -
Please come out and get rid of a few gallons of stew, several cakes and loaves of bread!!! This is a help call..!! Felling a bit better--cleaned the porch today--somewhat. Love Shirley
spent hours out there looking and listening to everything that goes on and then spent hours with my best friend these days on the computer

to bed very late - yes i see i need to sleep more but not til uh.. monday maybe??

I love your stories, J, I really do, but out of that whole post, this is what stuck in my head:
when nicole saw that photo, she had to go to the little girls room - hahaha - again - too much coffee...so watched that and enjoyd the morning - i. love. my. life
sorry, man. I don't intentionally look for the stuff--it just reaches out and pokes me in the eye!

Seriously, though, your bit about Jony, I dig it a bunch--play every request...I'll have to remember that one. I often think about that even now--the boy gets shoulder rides until I can no longer lift 'im up!

ed. note: we have a standing deal - he can inherit my nickname (without the ppy) when and if he can beat me in an arm wrestlgin match

I wish I had enough time to come and read your diary regularly, great stuff in here.... In a few weeks time, hopefully.

Bummer about the pay increase. Why is it that it's the most destructive jobs that are paid best, and the ones that hold the community together are rewarded with punishing salaries and conditions?

Day 37, Friday, April 13
No bad luck - in fact thing seemed to hum along pretty good
did a whole week' s worth of work in one day - the rest of the week i was busy with other admin stuff and advertising stuff
luckily a fugitive was on the loose in town and somehow i got the assignment - the provincial paper reporter did a distortedly sensationalized story that made digby look pretty "backwards"
course he is a yarmouth guy and they always want to paint us as wild - so be i t - woohoo - he is also the only reporter i know who when found blatantly guilty of plagiarism, managed to keep his job - more credit to him i guess - so that meant part of my morning was spent on the streets looking for a photo of cops looking for fugitive - got a decent one - i could have been on scene for the "arrest" but i had to much to do - a whole week's worth

also had six lovely young ladies come to my office for a quick story i did on the areas new pool - they were great sports to play along with my jumpology experiments - we actually ran this one in the paper - the experience reminded me muchly of the old days when i worked a lot with kids - tour guide, sports coach, beaver, cub, scout leader - fun stuff - i had forgottten

false alarm at fire hall - got some local info on fugitive
hippy annonced he was comng to town with sue and was up for some clubbing (we only have one bar downtown and a tavern by the highway) - also arranged truck to move furniture and friends in various locations to help move it

worked all night til 5 - then slept til 10... (last night in my nest on the floor as it turned out)....

Day 38, Saturday, April 14
No rolls today, sorry
"Sorry no rolls today."

Chris woke me at 10 am - for the photo shoot - cold and windy and I was as reluctant as him to go out it - but go we did - he's committed - or should be - he calls his kayak guide company Committed to the Core

this is the second time he's been on the cover of the Courier - deservedly so - i seem to hang around with people who DO stuff - those are my favourite people - doers - chris is going to paddle across the Bay of Fundy to raise money for cancer (the story hey if you fell inclined check out his webpage and donate some money to the cause

i picked this shot cause it tells a bit of the story - i had the fun job of climbing down on the scallop boats to get close enough for my shots - actually down was easy but back up was treacherous as the boats were swaying quite far aprt and then slamming together - of course he had the COLD end of the stick - just at this moment some fishermen had yelled down to him to do some eskimo rolls - he didnt oblige - hahaha

so used my photos and job to help that friend and then the friend i was borrowing the truck from also had a use for one of my rainbow photos - so camera skills coming in handy these days - hahaha

finished writign and processing at two - rushed home and cleaned aptment - i have been meaning to "get to that" for a while - like maybe since christmas - oh god it was so disgusitng - but with hippy and sue coming i had to get'er done - thank god for company - started with a backhoe and then i sent in a draeger crew and then i used a few matches
actually honestly i was like a cleaning ninja - like Neo in Matrix in the scene agasint the zillion agent smiths - i was a cleaning whirlwind - scrubbing and vacuuming and putting away and throwing out and i quickly made some appplesauce to freshen up the place, and lit a candle, made the "nest" and worked worked - flat out for three hours
hippy called at 4:45 and said he was in Bear River - i jumped in the shower, dressed, finished the dishes and one last quick run round with the vacuum, shut it off and "ding dong"
Just. In. Time. - i was still out of breath when i opened the door - hahaha - soooo clean - sooo nice
but bare - hahahahaha

so supper at the Fundy, showed English Sue what a lobster looks like - then out to the judges - where sue got to try some moose meat - hahaha - and meet my mad man grandfather - on leaving she said "I dont think anyone has ever called me a crazy limey freak before." hahahaha

then back to the apt to drink some jim bean and listen to tunes on my DVD player - hahaha - joined by chris and ashley and eventually off to Club 98 - boring - no one there and they wanted $4 cover - ack - but we got our money's worth as the owner started buying us tequila shots, baja rosa shots, talea shots and then i started not knowing exaclty what i was drinking - more jim bean i think - no one ever showed up but we got good and drunk - learned from mr kenley another side of digby's small p politics - funny

I woke up sunday on my office floor with my coat on and my camera still around my shoulders???

Day 39, Sunday, April 15
JOny's wentworth festival

From the floor of my office, i went home for a shower, discovered one of my house guests had puked a bit but otherwise house intact - showered and picked up truck - a little shorter body than i anticiapated ??

fun to drive a machine with power and CD player - woot - hit hfx first and picked up ski gear - was in a rush but shelley sugggested i come in for a coffee (BTW - i had called ahead for soome real coffee- made the mistake of buying a Tim's - yuck - cant stand it anymore - im totally spoilt

hit the hill near 12:30 and found the boys jibbing a jump in the terrain park - crazy GT - good to see my boy - i hiked right to top of headwall and met Sonny, Shane, Alex and ...whathis name on top - combined ages= 228 and they had done seven runs - they are the kings of that hill - im a subroyalty i guess - kind of a knave or something

fun to spemd time with JB's crowd - i acted as eccentric as i could cause that seemed to be the role he wanted me to play - took two of his buds to help me get my bed - the bed my dad built - from hippy's chateau - one of the guys smelled badly of dope but when i asked the score he denied it - silly kids - lieing is dumb

hot dogd on the BBQ - one last hike up headwal for me - two was all i had in me - sweating huge - on top a lone i took off my shirt and laid back and soaked up the sun for a while - so sweet - birds wind sun and nothing else - heaven up there

skiiing was heavy but what the hey - camera was coveredin moisture all day :( buddy pushed himself to complete exhaustion out there - me too

hit hfx next for fold out couch - rob and i manhandled it out of den's old place - huge huge sofa - tied er down - hippy and gang callign and texting about lobster party - i can hear them woo hooing in background - but i had to pass - forecast calling for early moring rain - no i would not have made it bnack with a dry coach - landed home about 11:30 - lockyer helped me carry it in - he is moving wizard - no big problem - yay - threw some sheets on bed and slept in my own bed for first time in three years

ebilflindas 11 years ago
That's a great attitude shot of Jony!

Sounds like you had a little of Samrag's old couch / coach dilemma! ;-)

Considering you n your bed've got some catchin' up to do, I can understand the *gasp* lack of commentary.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
it's a long story the bed story and last night i made the choice to go home and sleep IN IT rather than write ABOUT IT
at the rate my colelagues are fucking up and making work for me, i may never get back to the diary - hahaha - just a little pissed/ frustrated - but trying to move on
my grammie made the quilt - it is lovely - im just not a coral and salmon kinda guy - though i am trying to be grateful
