Day 207, Wednesday, Nov. 21
Jingle Blahs

PB210010

another two hours with the hund - have thought a lot about how im going to make myself go for a two hour walk everyday when i get home - maybe get myself a dog...

peaceful walk really in the "wald" - over the thrumming autobahn to the kleine see and around - lasti for a swim and chasing a ball - slowly home - well behaved and calm today

alex came for mittags and we drove together to CentrO to the weihnachtsmarkt - i bought some wooden xmas decorations for presents, some wax candle figures too and some german hard candies

we shared a gemütliche glühwein "mit" as they say - mine with rum and alex's with amaretto - i also tried a dinnede - like a flammeküche only thicker crust and not as baked - yummy

alex bought a pair of halle schue - indoor soccer shoes - you have to wonder with him does he always have an angle - hahaha - i picked up a pair of casual shoes - what can u get for 20 Eu I ask you

later alex showed back up her as heike had asked him to take lasti for a walk - funny she never called me ?? but lasti wouldnt go with alex so i drove them to the woods - lasti wouldnt get out unitl i did - and then he chased my car down the road - finally alex got a good grip and here i am - soccer tonight - perhaps for last time...

(EDit: 3 Eu deposit on the mug - i did a double take when he asked for 12 Eu for 2 drinks - got six of it back thank god - although i did uberlege for one second maybe itd be a cute souvenir - okay im tired, i admit it)

i am not in the spirit at all but since i leave germany tuesday this is my last chance to see the xmas markt - and by buying german xmas presents i cover both souvenir shopping and xmas shopping with one fell swoop - very smart if i do say so myself - not to mention wednesday late november morning was quiet uncrowded at the markt - compared to what it will be 2 weeks from now - pablo lets just say i was doing my best to AVOID the christmas spirit - ahah!

Day 208, Thursday, Nov. 28
Landschaffen Sunny

PB220035

had the best walk this morning - i vaguely remember a rough crankiness and general lack of enthusiasm for another %&%&#**' !!walk with the *"!"§"§#§+$" dog - but...

IT WAS SUNNY OUT - holy rays of heaven batman - what a glorious morning - decided today would be the day to check out a couple little corners of the landscaft here which ive been wondering about for a while - piad off as i found a great little trail running along the ridge overlooking the valley and the bridge - even had i discovered it earlier it would not have had the view it now has with all the leaves gone - gorgeous - wonderful - a great goodbye nod from the countryside

came over the last ridge before the brdige just in time to see three deer run through a sunflooded glade and disappear into the woods - under the bridge and through mintarde - one church, one store, one dry cleaner, one bank machine and one pub and two soccer fields

followed the ruhr back to saarn -the hill trails are covered in a thick blanket of beech nuts and leaves - everything a rusty brown - the blue sky against the bare branches is poetry in 360 - below the ridge was the green patchwork of fields and roads and small copses of tree of bushes, hedgerows and paddocks - down the middle runs the steady ruhr with swans and their grey young ferrying across or sitting in an eddy - horses and ponies grazing - little traffic but the occasional ubiquitous yellow post van, dark figures bundled up on bikes and old couples smiling along hand in hand in the sunshine
- a quiet day, the air warm and delicious with ´the scent of earth and leaves

a great day and memory - hit me just how important it is to enjoy every moment in the moment - i have had many fantastic walks here - if anything this trip has reminded me just how important walking is to me - peripatetic indeed

and lasti? that is going to be rough - i have spent more time with him than anyone on this trip - yesterday showed how fixated he is on me - he drives me nuts you know - i have been inviting people over for a meal of Hundfleisch lately - but I know I will miss him too - loads - aint life rich

maybe early to be posting for the whole day - but i dont know what the next few days hold, including whether ill be on the computer or not (strings on etwes guitar finally and playing hheehee)

Day 209, Friday, Nov. 23
riggght - okay then - alles klar

PB230152

i have a tendency to think in black and white - good and evil - i fight against it - i like to let the true nature of somerthing speak for itself but it doesnt always work for me....

parked the car in saarn altdorf and lasti and i took one last long walk around the downtown mülheim area - saw schloß broiche for first time - lonley eerie place in late november - very taken with gardens and fountains - they must be beautiful in summer

finally mailed postcards and letters - hahahaha - only here for two months - home and waiting for heike who had the day off and spent it shopping with friends from work -
i like to think im patient - but sometimes i aint -
and when lasti ate my sandwich this afternoon, ich habe ausgeflippt!
i lost it - not really - but that was the moment i really started looking forward to being home - hahahaha

went to the markt in essen - lots of people out drinking glühwein and making a time of it - snow would help - me anyway...

Day 210, Saturday, Nov. 24
almost

PB240190

i normally have saturday mornings off to rest up for my afternoon soccer game but heike wanted to scrub the floor this morning - lasti and i toook a long last walk in the direction of mintarde today - turned out to be quite a nice sunny day if brisk

after a gemutlich breakfast heike and i went in town to get a gutschein, a giftvertificate for her friends birthday - i bought some xmas cards - and we enjoyed a coffee in that horrible little cafe in the basement of the forum - hahaha

mülheim's xmas markt has been feeling outclassed by essen and oberhausen in terms of size - and then dortmund has the biggest xmas tree in germany - so mülheim has decided to go for quantity baby - 200 xmas trees along the pedestrain stretch downtown

sadly wont light up til monday - after a rest at home we went for a walk together with lasti in the woods - not too far in the dark - hahaha -

then berbours birthday party - the smokers - us - sat in one small room separate and aprt from the nonsmoking family - funny partyx where we were not to mix with the others because of space and air ??

yummy food - although light on dessert - hahaha - im such a critique when im cranky - hahaha
i got to listen to four hours of women talk - the less i say the better except maybe to explain i can find just about anything interesting in a foreign language - home exhausted - a cozy evening

bye bye Du blödes Ding Du

PB250199

up early for a nice a walk together with lasti - laughed and carrried on like we havent done in a long time - we have been teaching each other words as we wlk along and today's theme was parts of the face - cheek to cheek

after the walk we headed to oberhausen for lunch at carmen and olafs - they played a CD of<bagpipe music for me and as we sat down to eat they played the canadian anthem

delicious meal complete with a magic trick by olaf - he is quite goood
the goulash was scrumptious - he served me one of the potatoe balls extra salty and i didnt even notice - i never notice when he gives me something like that - he has fdone it everytime weve met and since everything in germany tastes weird i never notice - kind of sad really - if i had noticed i would have overreacted to make him happy - hahahaha

after a lovely raspberry cream cake i played guitar for everyone - olaf called his mom and made me play for her over the phone - hahaha

a wonderful warm afternoon - such a nice family

home again out with the dog and then settled in to watch TV one last night together - weird - hard - life is so wonderful eh

one last day

PB260225

one last day - woke extra early - offered to go for broetchens - "jonathan why do you ask such questions - just go for the buns or dont - but let me sleep" shes so sweet in the mornings
drove down to the bakery and picked up a schokolade brotchen too - my fav

one last gemuetlich breakfast - then one last morning walk with lasti - through the old stand of beeches - lasti tried to jump on two weibxhens today - had to keep him on the leash a lot - found way back to my favourite ridge side trail - down to mintard - decided today i just didnt have time to explore new ground - sad realisation - turned my back on "new" and shuffled along the old lonley unter the mountain trail

spent day packing - left two pairs of pants and my muddy old walking shoes - and other odds and sods - not in case i come back but more because they are wore out junk i dont want to schlepp half way round the world - oh and my old rain coat - hahaha

cleaned up and took lasti for his second walk - into the woods in the dark - very sad day - the woods arent especially beautiful or awe-inspiring but they are pretty darn picturesque and right there - easy to get into and wander around and im gonna miss that feeling they have been pouring into my soul - home snacking waiting for heike who worked late

one last cuddle on the couch - ouch - met alex and juta at the roadstop - beers and quatsch - good byes
home - bed - one last time falling asleep with her in my arms

hey! lemme cheer you up with a joke. i think it's great. it originated from a chainletter i got, but i tell you ..this is hilarious

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak. After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done. The monsignor replied, "When I am worried about getting nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. If I start to get nervous, I take a sip."

So next Sunday he took the monsignor's advice. At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink. He proceeded to talk up a storm. Upon his return to his office after the mass, he found the following note on the door:

1) Sip the vodka, don't gulp.
2) There are 10 commandments, not 12.
3) There are 12 disciples, not 10.
4) Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.
5)We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the late J.C.
6) Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.
7) David slew Goliath; he did not kick the shit out of him.
8) When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey, don't say he was stoned off his ass.
9)The Virgin Mary is not called "Mary with the Cherry"..
10)The recommended grace before a meal is not: Rub-A-Dub-Dub thanks for the grub, Yeah God.

9 was too much for me but HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! @ everything else!

Day 213, Tuesday, Nov. 27
gone

PB270235

up before 4 am for a shower, coffee and hugs
i drove and as heike was still in her pajamas she didnt get out at the airport - she just climbed over to the drivers seat and drove away - quick easier rough enough

on the puddle jumper to frankfurt i eavesdropped on two businessmen - one from holland and one northern german - me i enjoy listening not so much to what people say but how they say it - they were very entertaining - and that multilingual game is something i am going to miss very much...
frankfurt wasnt too bad - had to wait a bit for gate to be announced - did some walking - had a crazy expensive and shitty tasting coffee and donut - used up my last euro's emailing jony and other family members
as i waited for this flight i couldnt help thinking "this is the big one - this one takes me home" - part of me very anxious to get home, part of me not wanting to leave - id say i split my time pretty evenly between feeling sad and looking forward to being home - i didnt talk to anyone i didnt have to - i was and would be for days lost in thought
lots of reading and watching great movies on big flight - didnot even try to sleep
we flew 80 miles south of greenland - cant wait to ask chris when we are going paddling there!
montreal was not a pleasant experience - so many hoops to jump through - cold and snowy and wet there - first hoop was long walk to customs and long lines - then the questions hoping he wouldnt put me down for an inspection considering my flight was boarding in a half hour
then the luggage conveyor belt broke and most of us waited that half hour to even see our luggage - conincidentally my belt broke while i was waiting for my luggage - quite a coincidence and when u thin of it that was the third belt to break on this trip...
my pants were around my knees for the rest of the trip :S
two imperatives once i had rechecked my luggage - to piss and to wakeup with a coffee - again through security - ran to just catch last boarding call - i noticed i was a little stinky just as i sat down beside the two young attractive fligth attendants -oh well
this time i got to eaves drop on a french conversation between a montrealer and an ontarioan - aint life rich - exhausted
jb's beautiful handsome mature face there to great me - the little devil complained hs back was sore from driving the hour and a half topick me up - would i mind driving - no problem - id only been travelling for 17 hours at this time - hahaha
called heike from jonys - lisa gave me jony's grad photos and more divorce related papers - hahaha - welcome home
back to halifax - hi im home - im going to bed now

really struck by the space here in nova scotia - the difference is huge - we are really uninhabitated - found the traffic laughably light - found the lanes too wide - too much space - (also found my steeerring wheel huge and my transmission rough and stiff) a serious readjustment phase - my son lives so far back in the woods it is really scary - never so aware of the space here before this - wowow

cold alone wondering safe warm home

Day 214, Wednesday, Nov. 28
wandering wondering where am i

PB280240

rob and shel welcomed me home with - i guess i cant say here and now - but two clippings that really make me want to stay in nova scotia - confused
time change - life change - who am i -what do i want - where am i going
set some practical goals for today - went out to dartmouth crossing and bought a new pair of running shoes - boy does that feel good - i left my mud soaked worn out pair in germany - looked vainly for a new belt - did not expect the shoes to be so easy to find or the belt so hard
home - babysat will
later went for a long walk around dartmouth at night - totally lost - does not bother me at all to be lost - hahaha - im used to it - saw parts of city i never knew anything about - photo is exactly how i feel - i recognize home, nova scotia in that photo but nothing is clear - nothing settled - nothing bright
was going to go to movie with denise - took a nap and only woke up twice - once to hear shel say den couldnt make it - thank god - and twice to talk with my wife- could not remember that cnoversation the next morning - hahaha - zonked

Day 215, Thursday, Nov. 29
why do i refuse to make anything easy

PB300245

spent morning reading everything i could get my hands on concerning the debate presently raging in halifax - the great celine dion concert debacle - haligonians were just plain ugly in their treatment of dion - and then theres the bench clearing brawl involving two teams of eight year olds - aint canada a wonderful place...

oh Canada!

went for a long run around shubie park - an hour and a half - need to find a way to bring camera along... - cold - lonely - lovely run - it hurt in a good way - advanced my thoughts a long ways...

been talking to heike everyday - getting the feeling we are slowly pulling off a bandaid that should be just yanked off - passed out again on the couch early

breathing

PB300251

had some work to do this morning - first a walk around the neighbourhood - sunny crisp blue november - alone - breathing looking - thinking - where do i fit in
the work went well and finished 15 minutes before deadline
relief - erleichtum - ahhh
then later a phone call - one minute new york the next tschuss
the wondering is over- the questioning - that is a relief - a huge sad relief - a heavy sad relief
tonight im going to meet a good friend and shoot the shit - tomorrow i play with my boy - tomorrow night is birthday jam party - i hear hot tub kegger - not believing it - i need something like that
sunday i start back in digby - i think with all ive learned and experienced - been through - i will be able to keep the ship ss jonathan on a more even keel... i feel another growth spurt coming on

Day 217, Saturday, Dec. 1
Ill take the Autobahn over this

give me the autobahn anyday

woke up early, and hit the road - off to spend the day with jony - noticed a few flakes in town and the radio was calling for some snow squalls - well i ran into all of those squalls

between stewiacke and brookfield (a distance of maybe 16 km or 10 miles) i counted 8 cars in the ditch - later that night i heard the truro police say there were 50 accidents that day - hahaha

called jony from truro where i stopped for a coffee and a bite of banana loaf - the 311 was also nutso - although sunny by earltown where i pulled in to murphy's store - bought a pack of oatcakes and shared news with the men round the wood stove - i gave them my report but no one could tell me if it was better over to the shore - on i went to find out

it was pretty clear in "the street" - picked up JB at tony's where he had been taking advantage of the high speed to buy Ozzie tickets - thats my boy - i guess - hahaha

stopped over at hill where the weather looked pretty good - continued on to bass river to hike the west bass river falls - but by the time we got there it was a full out blizzard - headed into truro for a meal at murphy's - ah seafood - i am home

then some shopping and then back over nuttby (the highest point on mainland NS) great place to be in a blizzard - lots of times jony and i just sat back and said whoa - couldnt see A THING - faith baby

dropped jb off and headed back out through the storm - by the time i got to truro i could see the stars - safe in halifax about 7 pm - a full 12 hours of driving around in a blizzard - sounds like me - but why?

Day 218, Sunday, Dec. 2
my buddy's birthday

PC020283.JPG

the real reason i came home - hahaha - not true - i had no idea - but a pleasant surprise- brian (aka hippy, on the right with glasses) turned 29

so we all piled into the hot tub with a keg of home made (from scratch homemade) coffee beer - and - this is the big hooray - a waterproof camera - not only that, but it is also frost proof so you can let it freeze solid to the pool deck

great crowd - hippy and his new girl erin - i have heard of her just never met her before - eric and carol and mark and jeff - that's a party

inside was fireplaces, woodstoves, baked brie and homemade breads - then a whole lot of guitar and singing - (note to self: chlorine filled hot tub, minus 20, frozen head hair, and then top-of-the-lungs all-night-long singing not recommended for good throat health) - at least NO ONE WAS SMOKING - hooray im home

i curled up on the couch around 3 am - we'll blame jet lag and not old age thank you - about 5 am i heard them back in the hot tub - according to the reports im getting, "hot" should read "luke warm"

me as always up first and home - cold - beautiful sunny day - naturally - couldnt have been sunny when i wanted to go hiking with JB - spent morning packing up - filled car and then set off for the Big Dig!

roads good and traffic light - longer drive than i remembered - life in digby - just unlaoding the car, 3 peeps stopped to talk - first night was a little lonely (ed. note: i think it will be lonely for a while- heike has spoiled me bad)

another day at the office - and then it was pay night at the fire hall - once a year - about half a plane ticket to germany - we cook up a big scoff of ribs, wings and scallops - fry up i should say - then we drink a few beers and play a few games of 31 and or poker til the wee hours - i went ahead about 36 bucks

sorta - spent the morning in bed - well actually i got up around ten, showered and fell back asleep til noon
tried to get a photo of santa at the library but all those pesky kids kept getting in my way
watched spiderman3 finally (i am getting all caught up movie wise)
loved that the new guy got bounced for photoshopping his photo - tsk, amateur - as i always say, if youre gonna cheat, dont get caught

the only time i ever got caught, i honestly thought it was quite obvious i had photoshopped it - i wonder why they took photoshop off my work computer?

they other thing ive been thinking about is aunt may's advice to peter - a husband has to be able to put his wife before himself - right. like for example leave his country of birth and friends and family to live an ocean away?

played pick up hockey in the marning - last time i played hoceky in a rink was... never. oh wait, i did play once in tata, so that would be, lets say, at least 12 years ago, and before that... never - oh i did play a little on the pond as a kid but really, i dont know the first thing

oh wait, yeah i do - keep your stick on the ice - i tried really hard to do that and to keep my ass off it - moslty worked - man am i sore

worked worked

then tried curling - more falling down on cold hard surfaces - both clubs (pick up hockey and curling) are hurting for members - i have one piece of advice - turn up the f$^%^ing heat, ya morons

who wants to go out in the freezing dark, drive to a freezing rink, and freeze all night - i mean really - am i the only one who sees the problem here

hahaha - actually loved both sports and maybe in a few weeks ill have figured out this not falling down stuff...

how can u ever really know if youre looking at a sunset or rise? a beginning or an end? maybe if you have your feet pretty solidly on the ground and you know where youre headed, what direction youre going, maybe then u can figure it out - i nver know - i dont even really see the difference anyway

the sunrise or set itself is just a phase between two other phases - it doesnt matter to me if the sun is going up or down - it is still beautiful

startd semi early at work - meetings wrting shooting skipping out for fire dept stuff then the day was over

then ended up waiting around for hours to help with more fire dept stuff - we put on a casino night for an insurance company - only 5 of us worked the whole thing - where was everybody? and yet they can all make it tuesday for free meal and drinks and pay envelopes - sheesh

i tried to look like i was having fun spinning that gosh darned wheel for two hours and tried to help everyone walk away with a mittful - was glad to go to bed

Indeed, how can one tell? Curious minds went to "More Properties" on this photo, only to learn "December 7, 2007 at 12.52pm AST". Hmm, could be either, or your camera is stuck in mid-atlantic, together with your body-clock. Would not be surprised LOL.

scoopin

PC090489.JPG

writing lots saturday - til supper time when i headed up to help with saturday night bingo - i dont get it - i know - it's their lives but bingo??!!??

still we make money off it so i help - and make as many quiet jokes as necessary to get through the night

jeremy didnt win the 23k but two old friends did - two weeks ago - here i am just back on the beat and still im getting the scoops everywhere

THE BIGGGEST BINGO WIN IN NOVA SCOTIA HISTORY - that's the kind of hard hitting journalism im into - that and the great eggnog scandal have pretty much eaten up my week - but a week well spent ill say

had a few beers with the chiefs before going home for more cinematic catch up - die hard - i cant belive it was almost 20 years ago i saw the first die hard in strasbourg france - where did the 20 years go
PS - i likehis hoodie - i was away when they ordered them :(
i wonder if they ordered any extra?

yeah sunday

vera4.jpg

i sense a plot - no sooner has nicole become a non-distracting normal coworker, then the cat decides she will sit on my lap and arms and hands and keyboard while i type - ithought i read somewhere cats are good for your blood pressure - im thinkning that might be true if they are low on cholesterol - she is getting fat - i think if i feed her apples and cloves this week she might be an okay xmas dinner - anyone have any cat recipes?

sunday though is favourite day of the week - it is junior C hockey day - i love meeting everyone there - the quatsching (shit shooting), the teasing, the whole community camaraderie thing - and a hockey game - wouldnt mind seeing a win :(

but still fun - and then it isnt a hard story to write - evn if u do end up writing it sunday night... i love sundays xox

jitters

PC140591.JPG

at 8 am we were called out for a traffic accident - snow storm - slush - what a young truck of guys we had in #3 - ryan c, jacob, daren, TJ and me, adrien driving and robbie in the officer seat - they were callling for the jaws and robbie looked back to see who he had - he just shook his head

i felt like crap and was some glad when we heard the peeps were already warm and dry at home - we drove rigth by the car and went all the way to gullivers

working - they actually called john from HQ to complain we only had one story online for the day - they are counting? - thankfully i had my share online - hahaha

was assigned to clean up after my replacement this week - not fun - but as heike reminded me, i like challenges - finding out from him what happened was like some kind of chinese water torture - finally had to ask for yes and no answers - (and by friday am, i had everyone in town settled down, daggers back in the sheathes, and santa sitting on a harley)

after hazelton arena, went home and passed out

go go go

PC130547.JPG

terrible night sleep - up with cold til 3 am - then called out to hosptial at 5 am for a false alarm - i was beat - dead - sat with boys at hall and drank coffee til 7:30

shower, quick work at work, then cranky man goes to sears to straighten it all out - and it all fell into place - buried way down in story was this:

The 2007 rally did have some challenges says Robertson.
Earlier reports in the Courier mistakenly referred to a $40,000 debt but Robertson says it was never even close to that.
“At the end of September we were owing $16,311. By Dec. 3 we had that paid down to $7,800. I have no idea where anyone got that $40,000 figure.”
Robertson also disagrees with a suggestion in the Courier that the rally was in debt because so many of its events were free.
“It wasn’t the free events that put us in debt. It was the one event we charged for that caused us all the trouble.”
Robertson says they spent $51,000 on the Road Hammers and lost about $22,000.
“We made a big mistake there. We tried it, it didn’t work and we are not going to try it again.”

also got a good positive story about ACOA support and ended with this skillful dig:
“We’re very excited about this partnership with ACOA,” says Peter Robertson. “It’s nice to have government recognize and support what we are doing here.”
its a long story but i just want to say that is a great dig - im a genius - if i have a talent it is in being so nice, im mean - w00t

played hockey at 10 - yes i have no hockey ability - no, i had a fantastic time - weird actually cause i suck - but i did improve a little - and i felt like a zilion dollars after - god i love exercise - and hockey - one thing for sure - you cant understand a sport until you play it - im sure of that

longgggg day of work after hockey - and night

winter on the shore

PICT0005.JPG

put in a morning but didnt really seem to be getting anything done
at lunch i took off for the shore - (but first collected $100 from the bank - i literally just walked in and said im so and so's grandson and they gave me $100 - there's a first time for everything)

the shore was frozen and snowy and icy and frozen - hahaha - nothing super spectacular but then it was so grey - walked a bit and as it was getting late headed home - loved the red doors on the barn

rick jacques had read my article in last week and wanted to take me for a spin - all over creation on the new trails - then... santa on the harley.

and now im off to hali - roads are greasy - im tired - lots to pack up - better get going - big ski day tomorrow - w00t w00t and colins movie night - oh boy

Day 231, Saturday, Dec. 15
buster number one

buster #1

i really should be shot for this diary photo - saturday was such a gorgeous day - stormy snowy white - over nuttby was so gorgeous - just white - total white blowng snow - fields white, evergreens making a lie of their names - stopped at murphy's for oatcakes and a choco milk - should get a photo someday of the crowd around the wood stove

brule point was also a beautiful sunny white out - roads alternately clear and then drifted over - whole drive to wentworth was gorgeous - highhead took my breath away with the little farm tucked under the hill, the line of trrees snaking across the fields on either side of the frozen stream

and the hill was swweeeet - we skied south side in the woods all day - the trees bending under the snow - huge whales on the beav and feff - and i didnt take one single outdoor shot - mostly cause im lazy and it was dammmnnnn cold and well mostly cause im lazy - i was just so busy enjoying the day and soaking up the weather

the photo is important - cause see in the old day, i used to strive for first tracks - first tracks of the year, first tracks of the storm, first tracks daily - that's not possible anymore - but i did get the first buster of the year - the very first buster of the 2007-2008 season - u gotta take your victories where u can get them i say

jony tom and i skied southside all day - a few rocks, a bit of a spring on the upper run in but otherwise sweet sweet dry snow over the boots - rare conditions in nova scotia - w00t

jony and tom took a break but i hookd up with cooper and kept going - great to catch up with him

14 runs and i called her a day - not tired and i didnt want to push it

"somewhere a phone is dieing"

back in halifax and off to colins movie night - awesome - watched a lot of youtube and a lot of extreme sports - and 300 - i love that film - drove home at 4 am

(PS friday night - long slow drive to hali in storm - just about there and shel called needing a drive home for her and her friends - drunk - stopped by cops - "just making sure people arent drinking and driving tonight" - "They're drinking im driving" - he laughed- shelly wanted to sleep in the car - i had to threaten to wake up robert - ive known shelly 33 years - she remembers the xmas play in grade two - she didnt know her lines but she says i remembered everyone's - haha - i dont know what she is talking about - hahaha)

zactly PABLO - thats winter in digby - when i wake up here i am shocked every day by the lack of noise - unless there's been a big dump the night before and then the plows are out - otherwise it is a ghost town - a snowy white billowy ghost town

Day 236, Thursday, Dec. 20
so much better

PC220002.JPG

okay, i dnt know if i should be admitting this here - but here goes - please dont tell my grandmother okay?
see years ago she gave me a quilt - a homemade quilt - stitched in the bottom corner is "made by grammie with love"
the problem is: i disliked the colours from the day i saw it - and it was kind of thin and not warm - god im an ungrateful pig!
so as you may have read above, i sent off two bags of belongings to the local charity - and yes, the quilt went too - i was in the purging mode - and the quilt just had to go - it wasnt keepng me warm, the colours grated on my nerves - ive been carting the thing around for years out of duty but finally something snapped and it is gone - okay there's the truth and the whole truth is - I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER
then of course i needed some kind of blanket - i mentioned to liz that i was looking and bamo - she picked up that quilt at the same place i dropped off grammies - and her husband also threw in two wool blankets - it is so toasty in my bed now - oh god i am so happy - i never want to get up now mornings and i cant wait every night to crawl under the covers
hahaha
spent whole day in office chasing down story on the local wharf - i knw it had been sold back to the community but no one was ready to go on the record - wrote the "speculation story" - next day it was announced officiallly - i could have spent the whole day in bed and accomplished as much - hahaha

rushing hin und her all day and trying to get some writing done - of course the call for the wharf story came while i was out rushing - darn - also had a fire call - someone was burning stuffed animals - crazy - no danger but smelled terrible and not so good for the neighbours lungs

we askd them to put it out - hahaha - thrree fire trucks and three rcmp cruisers - for a little garbage fire - and then we gt them to put it out - hahaha

early bed - i love sleep

beautiful cold

frank stanton on the cindy and april II, Dec. 22, 2007

kemp woke me up last night to invite me fishing - id been bugging to take me for a bunch of reasons - he fishes right off the spot where they were going to build the quarry - one of the biggest stakes against the plan was its impact on local fishermen - so i wanted to see the spot from a fishermens point of view - boy - did i get an eyeful

so gorgeous - and i feel blessed to have seen the sun rise this morning as the solstice was last night - from now on the days are getting longer "D

kemp's dad, frank ,above, is 84 and kemp told him to take the day off - but no, you can't keep him off the water - these guys have more knowledge of these waters than you can imagine - more than a landlubber like me can take in - and kemp is so articulate - i could just sit and listen to him talk all day

damn cold out there - but awesome - in by ten and the whole day in front of me - office - writing

baked a lasagna today - forgot how much FUN they are to make - wohoo - i bake a mean lasagna - hahaha
headed down the shore to a potluck in yarmouth - managd to get lost on drive down and see yet another corner of Nova scotia i had never seen before - mavillette beach
where what to my wondering eyes did appear - but two wet suit clad surfers enjoying winter without fear - these guys are cool - wow
got their names and a photo for the paper - should have could have got a whole story - man i love my province - what could be more cool?
the potluck was about as exciting as... well... a potluck - hahaha - nice to get out and chat a little - and so worth it for seeing the surfers - i am half tempted to be back there christamas day to chronicle their yearly surf - they say the weather forecast is for big waves...
hahaha - gotta go mom - where? oh just a two hour drive to some desolate beach where some guys i dont know might be showing up to surf - hahaha

Xmas eve

PC250010.JPG

ended up putting in way too much time at work :(
got to mom's after dark - but before supper - that's the important thing anyway - haha
quiet and cozy - just mom, bally, kate and me - baly doesnt seem to be in too much pain or maybe he just put on a brave face -
could not stop stuffing mom's yummy cookies into my mouth. this old recipe is stapled into the very first cookbook she put together as a young woman:

Coconut crisps
Cream: -1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup butter.
Add: - 2 cups brown sugar, add 2 eggs and 1 tsp. vanilla .
Sift: - 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. soda and 1/4 tsp. salt. Add to first mixture.
Put 2 cups coconut and 2 cups oatmeal thru food chopper and add to above mixture. Drop onto greased cookie sheet, and press with a fork. Bake in a mod. oven (375`F). 10 to 12 min.
Makes 6 dozen.

slept soundly under thick covers - heard no reindeer :)

Xmas

PC250024.JPG

slept late - i think 10 am could very well be a lifelong record - except for that xmas in Manchester where i was out drinking with my cousin til 4 am on christmas eve - might have slept later that year
cozy morning - yummy breakfast - delicious coffee - mom has to brew two coffees since bally finds hers too strong and calls it "snob coffee" cause she grinds her own beans - hahaha - i had 1/2 of his and 1/2 of hers - haha - an more god damned cookies til i was just about sick

i drove out and picked up grammie for "dinner" and it was delicious!
mom hit a home run this year - yeehaw - even if she did forget to buy peas, left the squash in the oven and only cooked two carrots - hahaha - the gravy was to die for - xmas pudding for dessert - i do not like to eat it but the show - lighting it n fire is something i very much enjoy
after tea and more cookies i took grammie home and headed over to windsor - rob and shel exhausted - theo said it was his best xmas ever - sipped rum til midnight - another warm and cozy sleep
