colourful characters

PICT0021.JPG

tuesday was one of those great days - it just got better and brighter as she rolled on - somehow ended up chatting with frank stanton in his gear shed on the wharf at whale cove

frank is the father of kemp and stanley - two of the saltiest digby neckers youll ever meet - i am enthralled just listening to them - to finally and unexpectedly meet their dad was a TRIP

other highlighhts - coffee with father mills and the tour of his garden - looking right inside an active wasp nest - meeting harold rowe - meeting jr's brother bruce - firehall meeting and prep work for casino night fundraiser

is my love for this place heightened by the realization that i will soon be going away - i have never felt so at home - i predict i will miss this place like i have never missed anyplace before ??

Day 124, Thursday, Aug. 30
weir

PICT0133.JPG

dark and foggy and a little eerie driving down the winding narrow sandy cove road at 3 am - met stanley a couple hours before his crew was due and he and i went out to the weir in his little boat - what better way to learn the ways of the weir than sitting in a little boat bobbing in the swell in the dark - a ghoslty full moon barely a dim glow through the fog - cormorants eavesdropping from the tops of the twisted birch poles -seals peeking through the spiderweb of twine and seaweed - the herring rippling the surface

it is times like this i love what i do more than anything imaginable - to get paid to sit and listen and learn and experience

met the men in john's shack at 5:30 and after chatting we went back to the weir (elmer gave me a great compliment - my latest column about hiking the shore was on the back page of the Courier - he said it was the first time he ever read the back page first - he never even looked at the front page.)

it is simply amazing the magical method they use to round up the fish - it is like they are casting a spell the ritual they go through - and every man on this crew knows exactly what to do and when - stanley hardly has to say a word

and in the end they drew up millions of the silver darlings

at 7:30 when we were done, the moods were quite changed - the men were tired and quiet where before they had been loud and talkative - stanley now was smiling and relaxed and ready to start his day ???

i went to work and started mine too - after work i spent eh night at the firehall helping get ready for this weekend - long day!!

let the wharf rat rally begin

PICT0089s.jpg

took a trip on the fire dept boat to police the jet ski show - and we made wake for the perfromers - working writing phoning all day

good thing i skipped the ride to westport - the sky opened up rain - OMG rain - put a chill on the crowds streaming in - after work i spent the night at the firehall for our casino night - had a few rums - ended up at the club, the tavern and some strangers backyard workshop at 4 am drinking beers - apologies to anyone i may have phoned -

lots of fun dancing and carrying on - media pass very handy

life is speeding up

44whlees.JPG

life is going fast these days - it's all getting a bit blurry, im just barely hanging on and my balacne is getting a bit iffy

somehow got up and went to work with fire dept supporting the street punishment motorcycle stunt show

had a call directly after on my cellphone
Jonathan - said a stern clipped voice
yes
where are you?
I'm at the firehall - where should i be?
(Im used to forgetting appointemnts)
My office. 2 pm.
ok who is this?
staff sergent phil barret (RCMP)
(thought: oh god what did i do last night?)
the helicopter pilot will meet u there
(Sudden comprehension and relief) woohoo

felt a bit nauseous as he pointed the nose down and circled tightly looking for marijauna - didnt find any - felt more nauseous listening to police radio talk about a murder and a domestic dispute all while im up for my ride

still so awesome to fly over digby - great view of bike rally, traffic problems, my house, the marina - hahaha

caught second jet ski show - wildness

not getting my stories written?

Day 127, Sunday, Sept. 2
flipping out

PICT0044.JPG

Sunday strolling and writing - talked to as many people as i could to get a story done about the rally - somene was murdered yesterday in doucetteville - the provincail media - tv and newspaper did not send anyone to cover the rally but as soon as there is a murder **boom** - they are down here - how can one murder be worthwhile but 30,000 visitors is worth nothing?

felt good to be done and have the afternoon to just walk around - spent most of afternoon down at waterfront taking pictures or eric "cyclone" malone

just about didnt bother going to wet tshirt contest - but somehow ran into darren and ryan ... bunch of beers at newman's - bunch of rye at darren's ... bunch of rum at bar

tricky photo assignment - the lighting sucked - hahahaha
everyone wants to see the photos - the firemen were like a bunch of 12 year old boys tthe next day - just had a facebook message from one of the contestants - she doesnt want them posted - hahaha

fitting in

PICT0229.JPG

both the wet t-shirt and my own self-induced initiation into the firehall took place within this 24 hr period but... the photos are a little much for my diary

in fact, i feel like maybe i let the locomotive (stress on loco) get out of control this weekend - bound to happen when u go FLAT OUT

monday was fire dept's biggest day of the year - we have had a fun day on Labour Day for 54 years - we raised 14k$ - our money -

day started with breakfast at irving - i only just amde it after waking up on office floor - adrien and i rocked at the fish pond and doubled the $ they make there - then did bingo til 9 pm

then... i warned them that me and tequila is not a good combo...

humpty dumpty

PICT0120

ok - this was taken saturday - i didnt take any photos tuesday - im pretty sure all day tuesday i was still liquered - cause wednesday i was hungover - starting to feel 1/2 human by thursday

but im ok putting this photo in cause it's a great thing to have in your diary - a shot of your home from the air!!

of all the wild and crazy things from the wharf rat weekend, the helicopter ride is definitely my highlight - funny part is - all three of the digby staff (one volunteer) got up for flights with different people this week - coinky dink!

anyway, what do we see here: (the photo is oriented looking south)
the fire hall is the big building in lower right corner
go south up the street in front of the hall to the first intersection - the gry bilding on the upper left of intersection is the jewellry store - i live upstairs - just east of me across the street is town hall
take the street in front of the jewelly store (Water street, front street, main street - the one with all the bikes) and head north - if you come all the way down around the curve (the curve is the beginning of the idiots looop), you can just see the edge of the Courier office in the exact lower left corner of photo

head back south up front street - all the way to the top of the photo - see that big tree in the middle of the photo - my grandfathers house is the yellow one just north of that

so there u go - all the info any stalker needs to track me down

fire hall meeting, cleaned up some more after fun day - richard fried up laast of haddock, scallops, egg rolls, fries - our motto - a heart attack is better than cancer - and we finshed off the pies too

PICT0010

up at 4:30 and working - cleaning office - writing - organizing - had whole day booked with appts - best of all was richard dugas who biked across Canada 20 years ago when he was 25 - since then he has, among other things, paddled around the whole of Newfoundland - this year he biked back to digby from vancouver

interviewing him im afriad i was like a little girl gushing and at the end, i had to give him my card so his brother can email me a photo and like a total idiot, i said, "and give me a call sometime, id love to go for a beer"
i never do that - it is usually the interviewees who come out with that and i smile politely and say to myself - not bloody likely - hahaha

you just never know one day to the next do you? perhaps i knew away way back in my brain somewhere
my plan was to help and luckily it seems sometimes you can help just by being there, slouched down on the couch eating blueberry pie -

my grandfather expressed two plans of action:
we shall eat ourselves out of our grief
we must love one another

left my house at 5:30 am (saw nola in the fog of front street)
saw shirley off in the AM, drove phillip to leslie's, played hockey etc etc with boys, walks with the judge, dishes and picked up pearl at midnight - tired

the rhythms of a household full of kids are the most soothing thing i can imagine - feeding, playing, cleaning, and holding them. sitting quietly with them or laughing uproariously.

i dont know how it works when it does and i dont know why it sometimes goes right off the rails

it is normal i think to ask how a loving god could allow this - for myself, i believe there are sometimes no answers - and peace is only possible when u stop asking - but that's easy for me to say

really no excuse for living in digby for a year and a half and only going sailing twice - if i get back, ill be sure to go morrrrree often
we had too many captains on board !
which is a joke maybe only a maritmer will get?
see we drink captain morgan rum - so when we say too many captains aboard, it means we have to go to work and get rid of a few - took about 300 pictures of the same three guys i was sailing with - geesh - fun though
by the way, we came dead last but we had the most fun - the photo is one of only a few good shots - and it turned out to be the race winner so i culd pretend that i was working - didnt get any work done that night

cutting bait

PICT0018

ever heard the expression - fish or cut bait?
it means do something - don't sit there jawing
anyway im leaving digby - i would have gone fishing with these guys but i just did not have time - should not have gone sailing :(
these guys fish "longline" - meaning they use use that long line with hooks on it - the ol tub and trawl method is maybe the only really enviromentally friendly way to fish - because it is so labour intensive, the catch is limited - not like when the big fish draggers go out and suck everything up - not to mention wreck the bottom - but that's another story - that's frozen herring glenn is cutting up - they were going fishing for Dogfish - a small shark about 2 or 3 feet long with a sharp poisonous barb on its underbelly - used to be a nuisance - then fished for fertilzer but now is actually used in fish n chips in britain
man i wish i could have gone- but u cant do everything

i can live with that - hahaha

pearl and i had a great trip to the waterfall on parkers road - i was glad to give her a cple hours peace- and glad to poke around the falls at a leisurely pace and see her smile

set off cross country for bridgewater but instead took a left in caledonia for liverpool - never had been there before -quaint little town - not as rough as i had imagined - stopped at the advance- funny i should stop there and two days later run into beth downtown hfx???

sat on the beach at silversands - gorgeous - but didnt have time to swim ?? - stopped and explored a rocky coast across from liverpool for a while too

Day 156, Monday, Oct. 1
fogging up

P9010005

nervousness mixed with panic is clouding my brain - i keep moving forward though - took the commute with rob and boys - walked up quinpool to ardmore met pearl for breakfast - nice to help her unload and unwind - she is stressed to the max - me too

a good cple hrs there - walked back up quinpool - trail shop, aerobics first, then down to MEC - woot - new travel mug 7$
then more banking and same teller - and then ferry and home and nothing done today - oops

idea: make crosswalks about a car length away from intersection so that first car isnt bothered about pedestrians - just an idea - i always walk behind first car anyway ...

Day 157, Tuesday, Oct. 2
here we go

P9020013

took a hike over the MacDonald Bridge while i waited for a batch of photos to print at Shoppers - all JB photos for Lisa except i figured I might as well do pearl and shirley a batch as well and myself too...

playing with new camera - coming to grips with fact it was not a step up the "nicer photo" ladder but a definite step up the "indestructible, carry anywhere ladder" - finally got a strap rigged up using my old Maple leaf strap and a key ring - I AM CANADIAN - hahaha

great thing about "vacation" so far - i have been outside every day and im sure ill keep that up for next two months - the big question is cani keep going outdoors after that... my goal for sure

picked up JB and we dropped in on woolavers before hitting the Radical Reels world tour of high adrenaline films from the Banff Mountain Festival - check out this youtube intro if you dare - it is woohoo woohoo wooo!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNcDlhL_76U

pretty stoked after that - Germany here I come!
(could be off air for an undetermined amount of time - wondering what kind of technology awaits at the heike's...)

how awesome that you managed to get a snap shot of the worker up there!

I like your geraniums. We too have lots of them on our balcony.

there is a funny commercial on TV here - a couple has just won the million and bought a condo in toronto - they take another couple out on the balcony to show them the "garden" - the point is that a million will go farther in Nova Scotia than in Tdot - maybe you have to be from here to get it - which is the slogan from another xenophobic commercial - for schooner beer - or is it alpine? - i dont get it
"D

the workers by the way are the highlight of the drive to work for my young cousins who are "construction worker" crazy - theo is 4 and had "homework" last night - the class is doing a continuous story and theo's addition was of course building a tree fort with backhoes and cement trucks et al...

Day 158, Wednesday, Oct. 3
take off

Win win

Jony dropped me off at the airport and drove away with my Civic happy as can be :)
The night before he and I went to a great film at the theatre - a showing of the best "high adenaline" films coming out of the Banff Mtn Film Festival - we were actually disappointed by the skiing and pleasantly surprised by the climbing - for me the dirt bike jumpers were the best - the kayaking was pretty crazy too - just wanted more - which i guess is a good sign - came out of the theatre pretty stoked, the two of us doing parkour moves down Spring Garden - hahaha

Day 159, Thurssday, Oct. 4
getting there

P9040038

flight was not bad - i made a big effort to get some sleep on the plane - not so easy considering the chairs aint so comfortable, the new movie consoles that let u wátch whatever u want (although i found the Tour de Switzerland bike race quite helpful with sleeping :)
worst of all most of the people on the plane make no attempt to sleep at all - but still i managed some

frankfurt was very confusing but i just followed along and went where i was told - which turned out to be not so great a strategie - the flight to D'dorf was cancelled - "technical problems" they said

was heißt they said - no one said anything - 2 different people directed me to gate 30 where i found nothing nada no one nope
stood in a line cause i didnt know what else to do - offered me choice of rain or plane but curiously told heike on the other end that i was on the train - if i had known that i would have chosen train - hahaha

to make matters worse, heike's phone wasnt working so i had no way to get a hold of her - so i called her work number, they gave me her work cell number and finally she picked me up - i cant say it was total relief, cause i still had no idea what i was in for

went walking with the dog a couple hours in the woods and then to meet a friend - ended up leading a horse across the highway - not something i expected to be doing at all let alone my first day in germany ?? i may get to do some riding with juta??

saleeeep! (heike had night duty so i slept alone in her strange little house with the key in the lock on the outiside ??!!)

Day 160, Friday, Oct. 5
day one big day

P9050070

considering i was fresh off the airplane after a life of sitting and writing all day, this friday was a big day:
2 hrs walking with dog in woods
getting lost in Moschengladbach with heike who has a special talent for getting lost
ate a german gyro and then einkaufing - shopping ( i thought she was a tomboy :(
then lost again going home
picked up 12 year old quais nephew for another 2 hr walk in woods
more shopping
he bought a round of eis and cappucinos
then a night of beer drinking and not understanding one word at her friends' house
she had been saying since before i left that friday would be a quiet easy snuggle up day for the two of us
this was my introduction to the fact that you can pretty much rely on a day`s events having no relation whatsoever to anything heike might say she intends to do
it sure is interesting...

Day 161, Saturday, Oct. 6
jumping right in

P9060078

cant rember why but i somehow ended up taking the dog for his morning walk alone today - a quasi succccess - the place is beautiful we made it home alive - the place is very beautiful - gardens trees paths churches ponds bridges - quaint
it was Lasti who took me to the Ruhr - in fact to this day i have never walked this way heike - but the hund and i go this way almost every day

then i had soccer in the afternoon - biked from alex and juta`s - the bike ride was gorgeous - like i was in the sound of music - ringing our little bell to pass walkers and horse riders, crossing bridges, nipping through woods, and then wending our way through narrow cobble stone streets to the football platz
what was i thinking? soccer in german! first of they play on a cinder field - dirt - both my knees are skinned - i had no idea how far the ball was going to bounce - let alone the fact i hadnt played any soccedr to speak of in a couple years - let alone i was so out of shape - but they didnt have enough players so iw as doing them a favour eh
we won thank god - biking back was murderous - the climb to alex's house exhausted me completely - more beer
home - sleep -
(tomorrow is thanksgiving and that shrimp salad is exactly what we would ahve for thanksgiving supper - hahahaha)

sunday in germany

P9070089

when we finally got out of bed we headed out for her sisters place in oberhausen - had a great lunch of fleisch, clausen, and red kraut - hahaha - sounds so yummmy - hahahaha
it was though - and a couple chocolate eis for dessert and a great big cappucinno- then olaf did some magic for me - he is prretty good
and so darned willing to entertain - haha
next we were late for the fussball game - her son alex is carrying the ball above - heike is on the other side with her ex-husband and his new wife - i felt more comfortable in the shade hahahaha
(next sunday i went alone to the foot ball game and hung out with the ex, his new wife and her ex - and she thinks my life is strange - hahaha
afterwards dogwalking and sleeping

Day 163, Monday, Oct. 8
german envy

P9080114

most eintritts in germany do not look like this - i felt like the karate kid but learning german - umkraut wegmachen is what it's called and i find really zenful work - im kinda glad she is such a slouch - hahaha

took the dog for a walk and worked in the yard - went shopping at night for heike's son's birthday the next day - she was mad the stores were closing at 8 pm as if she hadnt just missed 365 days of shopping - like her sons birthday was drawn out of a lottery this year - hahaha - ate some crazy fish sandwich - bad cold coming on

rush

P9090128

hurry hurry - sent in the morning for brötchen - was my furtherst drive yet - and in the morning rushhour verkehr nonetheless - like an idiot i bought some special sweets but no one here was at all interested - they dont like sweets they say as they spead jam on thier bread - okay then hahahaha

it was -afterall alex's birthday and his loving mother had bought him a set of socks with the day of the week on them and a shirt - wow crazy hold back their with all the sentiment

dog and i had a great walk under the ruhrtalbrücke until just about home when he decided to lay down in the middle of the street and not move - lalalalalalala dumdeedum lalalala lala

went over to alex's house and used lisa's computer - whew - first contact with the outside world in a week - im alive! - lisa made a supper and then everyone ran away - i was enjoying myself talking telling stories - it was a birthday dinner afterall - but everyone else was done and waiting for me - oops - alex had soccer practice and heike wanted to hurry home and lay down on the couch - hahaha

Day 165, Wednesday, Oct. 10
sinking

P9100165

nothing went quite to plan today - maybe this is the day i stopped laughing??
first off while working on the eintritt, i somehow ended up burying the neighbour's dog - just another one of those experiences i had not counted on...
took the dog for a walk or that is i followed him to the ruhr - guess he wanted to go swimming...
the building above is the youth hostel
meant to go to a meeting about new anti-smoking laws here - found the hotel - drove by three times but just couldnt figure out how to park - honest - did buy gas and some groceries
heike drove ahead to show me the way to kettwig sportplatz by car - "training" - old men playing pick up - i was having some fun but after 20 minutes my legs completely gave out - my quads cramped up and refused to do anything - stood in goal rest of night - fuck
drove home alone no problem
