Day 59 (Day 5 of kayak trip), Tuesday, June 26

When the sun came out, we dragged everything out of the boats to dry and ran up into and around the hills of Cape La Hune.
I bet it felt good to be dry and running.
or would that be running dry?
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
Great shots of the wild.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
it was so great to feel the sun - and to see the sky and the tops of the hills - to be able to lie down on the rocks and feel warmth - jut to be able to look around and see what is around you for a change - and to be dry - sort of - the running did produce a little sweat - especially when we looked down from the top of a 950 foot hill to see my kayak floating away and chris filling with water...
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
haha! i assume you caught it okay?
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
i actually didnt notice it floating away at first - chris and bri were ahead of rolf and i and the first thing i knew i could see chris running down the mountain like something out of the old cartoons - and in CROCS - we coined the new phrase "extreme croc'ing"

yup everything saved - and a good story for th gran kids...
Glow* 11 years ago
hehe, I'm gonna do kayak too this summer, but in a much calmer way since it's going to be on La Seine (Paris).I can't wait !
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
u will love it
and urban waterways have their own peculiar dangers and excitement - it will be wild in La Seine when the bateaux mouche go by!

Day 60 (Day 6 of kayak trip), Wednesday, June 27
Perry Baggs

late night francois

It's a long story - we made it to Francois - a final day of paddling in the rain - while rolf and i were hiking in the hills around francois, chris and brian had a few beers with perry baggs - it's a long story - but we ended up sleeping aboard his fishing boat "Harvey's dream" - and to thank him we bought him a 40 of cap'n morgan
"We better make sure it's good" he says and so begins a warm and wonderful celebration...

Day 61 (trip home from kayak trip), Thursday, June 28
Ex'stream Croc'ing

How glory knew what my next photo would be i don't know - the last morning in Francois, i woke way before the others and took another couple hundred photos - when he woke up chris suggegsted i ran to the look out and get some shots - i did - as i slowly ambled back down i saw the ferry docking - the story is written on my legs - it's a long story - life is good

12 hours after this photo was taken, i had my first shower in 8 days....
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
well, here's my thought on crocs. see i have two pair. one is the real deal and they are wonderfully comfortable shoes. there's a give to them and a way they hug my feet without being cloying that makes them ideal shoes for a poolside kind of day

the other pair is a knock off. for 6 bucks less i bought a khacki pair of not-crocs that are less than wonderful in every way. they are hard and unforgiving. they are as stiff as starched cardboard. they make farty noises too. worst of all, they rubbed blisters on my feet in places that do not have proper names. not-crocs can really suck and i would cheerfully lend anyone in my world 6 bucks if it made the difference between fake and genuine. CHEERFULLY, i tell you.

all that said, i've a question to beg....

is your croc hard?
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
ah... my crocs are not crocs - they are claws - but i am happy with them - i only paid a total of six dollars -

i cannot say that my crocs are hard - firm maybe - let's just say
they "get'er done."
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
careful - my crocs dont like it when people laugh at them
Glow* 11 years ago
I don't understand what happened to your feet and legs
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
it's a long story - first off they are so pale because they spent six days hidden in a dry suit under my skirt in a foggy rainy forgotten parcel of the world.

then when the sun came out i went running and jumping and climbing through the heather and gorse and rose bushes and brambles like a crazy man

and to make it worse, on the last day while we waited for the ferry to take us back to civilization, my friend dared me to run up the mountain and back before the ferry arrived - on the way down the mountain, i saw the ferry pulling up - i didnt want to miss my one chance of returning home so i ran down the hill straight through the bushes

that's the short version
Glow* 11 years ago
wow ! and you friend didn't run with you ?are you sure he's really a friend ? Cause he almost left you there ! :D
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
i got there just in time to jump off the wharf onto the boat - he is in the top 3 or 4 of my friends for sure - imagine what the others are like!!

Can u believe they have signs on the ferry saying it is illegal to sleep on the floor - which i would be cool with if they provided everyone with a plce to sleep - chris and i were more than ready to pay the extra $15 for a bunk - but there were none available -

Jill Barbour at Stanfest

jill barbour at stanfest

Didn't have enough sleeping in odd places so went straight from Newfoundland to a folk music festival. the folk festival in NS - the Stan Rogers Folk Festival

In my exile of PEI and now Digby, I dont get to keep up with the halifax music scene - acts like Jill Barbour and Catherine McLellan were old hat to a lot of people but brand new to me - yeah Stanfest!

Canso is the coldest corner of Nova Scotia so hooray for Jill for wearing that dress - it kept me warm :D

hey here's a funny story in "real time" - i am catching up now - and i have decied to leave the bottle neck behind and work through the other photos slowly when i have time... :D

anyway - back in january i told them that jan 4 was not my birthday - - i dunno even why - but they believed me - and to make the joke believable, i told them july 19 was my birthday - they got me a cake yesterday - hahahaha - i win :P

Day 64, Sunday, July 1

Great Sunday at stanfest - my intuition is called "Mark and Melissa" - it was raining and we had front row seats in a tent so we stayed and we're wowed by a jam session with 4 mongolian throat singers, a detroit harmonica freak and an applachian claw hammer banjo player

then to the pourhouse for some ales and dancing to downeast celtic played by some upper canadians from hamilton - woof

ED> youll notice i have the order a little screwed up :(
Only about 19 more days to go to catch up! I love when Tuvan throat singers sing with harmonica freaks and clawhammer banjo's! Just too way cool for words... oh, but then these are words aren't they.

I wish I could sleep anywhere. I wish I could sleep; that is not one of my talents.

Airport rally

Big air rally - 13 planes - woohoo - so they rated their landings - imagine if we did that for all visitors - like tour bus people - as they stepped out into the light al stiff and cramped - hold up cards for how smooth they step down to earth - hold little "getting off the bus" contests

just seems a strange way to welcome people to me - but then what do i know

it MEANS ... my pal jonathan sent me a postcard while he was off riverwalking. furthermore, i'm super proud of myself for having the balls to be real enough to produce my actual name. futhermore with the futhermore, it came to me on a day when i'd cried twice out of sheer frustration and utter loneliness -- effectively cheering me and obliterating for the moment the lurking shadow of depression. i'm grateful to him. hey jonathan? i'm grateful for your thoughtfulness and my handwriting is much loopier than yours.

p.s. awesome boat in the fog. i can totally imagine dead people inside of it

the original riverwalker

that's a diggerlog allright

this is i should enter in this month's theme - my favourite part of me

he took me on a tour of the river project - RP 07 - where he is working for the summer

the jony riverwalkers return to their roots - walking through the stream he told me all about his work and struggles and life - i am the happiest man in the world - so proud of him and happy for him and got some good pictures of him

we fed some great huge strong horses in a back pasture and watched them run away winnieing their manes trailing behind them

my son is steady - he holds a peice of rebar like he could kill you with it, a shovel like he could cut down a tree with it - he reaches down and runs his fingers through the water - the water is nice - we should go to the powerhouse - want to old man?

our favourite swimming hole - where u climb and swim and climb and squirm and dive and jump and swim - up the canyon - over waterfalls - along slippery ledges - swim climb - to the big waterfall

to the bridge - float back with the current - feet downstream - supper at the dino-diner

Thank you

Just one of those days when u know the universe is going your way... interview with THE giant of Nov Scotia folk art - no one has been as prolific and no one has created such a detailed lively record of his community - and no one is as eccentric - unless it is my grandfather

and they were once buddies -

and then an evening with the weir fishermen - it is pure beautiful magic and art what they do - sadly the big seiners will have the herring all sucked up soon leaving nothing for the little guy - for the little community...

bob Snider is the absolute best - i went with heike - she did not understand much but she didnt have to - he is so expressive and open - he is kingly in his perfect simplicity - and he is a genius of a writer

heike and i drank beer in the old town pub til the bar lady wanted to go home

i went back to the office so full of smiles i worked all night without bothering to sleep - i think in german these days and def. i dream in german too :D

to cool off i visited the most beautiful waterall ive ever seen in this gebiet - as a measure of how wrecked i was by the mysterious experience, i took no photos :(

heike and i went to bridgetown for ice cream and then the pub again and then a moonlit good bye walk - she flies out of my life in the AM - so wir werden mal sehen was wir sehen werden

but the person calling from toronto didnt understand canadian pay phones or english -so i was shouting directions at the photo shoot subject in english and saying "Ich spreche dir nicht" into cell phone - shooting photos one handed - and

meanwhile all i heard out of phone was

Jonasin. ich vermiss dich schon jonasin

well there are a couple other uninspiring shots of the inside of my car - i took some shots to see if i had destroyed my camera after it rocketed off the seat after i stopped short for @#%$@#@# cat
strangely this photo did not reassure me about the camera

the cat did wake me up for few kilometres - late night drives home arent so much fun -

again not inspired to take any photos outside of work - though im proud of this one - i have little success with soccer but this one turned out awesome if i do say so

would ya like to hear about the gentleman who thought i shouldnt be taking photos from behind the end line? - little too worked up about his son's soccer game if u ask me -but then no one did - oops

didnot manage to wrk today - always seems to be the way when i have tons to do - paralysed - this week i am the paper - with help from karla kelly the worlds best volunteer stringer

all i managed to do today was fill out my visa form, get the photos done and delivered to my "guarantor" - might take a half day soon and run it to hfx - priorities after all -

also looking for work in germany - might like to string for english news sources somehow - anyone have contax? or jobs? just something casual cause i may not be there long or have a work visa...

and .... maybe some of you european flickr people might want to put me up for a night if get to wandering around a bit... course this is all very preliminary right now... and surreal...
