of course in some ways tying to get ready for my vacation is what's stressing me :S

Relax... (good advice which I never seem to take either)
Dragonhide 11 years ago
sounds like you need an escape for a while....
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
man - i dont care if it rains the whole week im on the water - i was on this very shore (aboard a costal steamer) four or five years ago and saw nothing but fog - i dont care what i see this trip either - no cell phone, no email, no women (heehee), just me, the waves, and my boat - im so stressed here that the idea of bobbing around in the rain in a fog bank on the north atlantic seems appealing - frreezing in a rain soaked black fly infested tent all night sounds like heaven - squatting to crap and "bathein in water barely above 1 degree - cant wait - does this give any measure of how badly i need a break...???
yup
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
You forgot - "brushing your teeth with poison ivy"...you sir - NEED a break !
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
the real crazy thing is--- see i have this theory - about convergence of activity - huge convergence the week im away - 3 graduations in town, public hearings on quarry project, public hearings on ferry. and the international trade conference in town, the ferry is holding an openhouse - and soooo many other things i cant get to cause im going to be away...

hoooray!
Jonathan W PRO 11 years ago
Getting away on a boat is great relaxer that is for sure, I am completly land bound here in Colorado but I do have a 8 man river raft and as often as I can Iike to get away and float down the river and get into "river time:" which is when you have reached the point that you no longer worry about what time or even day it is, always come back so refreshed after that. I hope you have a great float!
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
i know it's too soon to wish you a cheerful bon voyage, so i'll say this instead: word. you definitely need a break. you keep yourself so busy it's a miracle you've not passed out from pure exhaustion already. jonathan, if you were a beverage, you'd be a soda -- bubbly and full of caffeine. and inside your glass would be a crazy straw -- the really really loopy kind.

if *i* were a beverage, i'd be milk. clean, maternal, and wholesome. boring, even. hahahaha!
I cannot imagine our glorious glory being boring.

And you Mister Riverwalker definitely are not.

Going on vacation is definitely better than brushing your teeth with cod liver oi.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
i love milk - i hear we're not sposed to (I guess we're sposed to grow out of it) but i love it

*wink

im trying to figure out the brushing comment - seems to relate to CG's poison ivy which relates to things to look forward to in NF - hope no one will be too disappointed if i use Crest... bshaw

i believe very firmly in the following
"When you're going through hell, keep going."
sleep and eat and sunshine and things finally coming together in a workable manner for the week much elevated my mood - and nicole was in a wacky mood - which always helps
Hey, I imagined you were going to be roughing it; but wow, that's some vacation boat. :D

But I bet he did, thank you very much.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
Jony did call me and i was surprised and grateful - he owes me nothing - he is so great - funny smart and right on - these days he is jumping off the falls regularly - a bit scary but scarier is he says i am jumping with him next time - i told him i will never go the falls with him again... hahaha
No, of course, he owes you nothing; except that you are his father and best of all, you are a good friend to him. You truly like and respect your son and that shows. And I think he knows it--so of course he called.

happy place

secret fishing spot

so much to do friday but i had this apptment and didnt want to miss it - learning to follow my judgement which i have learned time and time again is better than someone else's - who thought i was wasting my time driving over there - exact words "doesn't sound worth it at all"

the shots were great, the story is a sweet little good news blurb and the time out of the office, face to face with people was invalueable - woot - also discovered where carolyn sloan lived by accident - haha - did a uuey and we talked "quarry hearing" strategy

spent a great deal of night writing - then dropped into firehall just as they were lining up for a photo - coinky dink - hahaha - it was company two's social - had a bunch of beeer and laughs and then ZZZZzzzzz
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
Day 49, Saturday, June 16
eternal

PICT0055.JPG

had intended to write a piece before work - on a saturday = hahaha - slept in - made it to hearings just in time - here we go - kind of fun being one of the people who knows just about everyone there - in fact i introduced noah richler to bilcon's pr guy, hugh fraser and then got to watch the pro at work as he immediately scored an interview with the clayton people - so that is how u do that

the PR guy said quite off handedly "i think they know where u stand" and noah gave an assertive unflinching - "how do they know that? from writing i did five years ago? a lot changes in five years. it is hard to argue with jobs. i have a 23 year track record as a fair journalist."

of course he overdid it when he said he doesnt have a stop the quarry sign on his house - technically thats true - but he does have a stop the quarry sticker on his door - hahahaha

i wrote in my notebook at the outset of the hearings
"The white points quarry review has ratcheted up the boredom level to palpably torturous." and it immediately got more exciting - the chair robert fournier took his gloves off and started wailing on buxton - buxton and crew were stunned and caught very flat footed (to be fair, by monday they had shaken off those punches and had their guard up and were ready to go toe to toe)

still i think i got a total of 40 minutes sleep - my story and the herald's story were total opposites - cause medel skipped out early and missed the melee - hahaha - gotta be embarassing

after hearings, took a brreak and a spin out to bear river for a bowl of lamb currie - stew - yum and ice cream banana maple syrup dessert

and a trip to new cottage they are building in smith;s cove - with a view to die for - the cleared land is a riot of wild flowers - we had a fun game of name that one :D

back to wrk and about to call er quits when... a firend called me drunk from the middle of the woods- their marriage is going up on the rocks big time but neither of them has the strength to either end it or take some positive steps to examine the problems - like seek professional help - not get drunk and lost in the woods and calling friends - hahahaha - life is so fucking strange - man, having walked that road, i have some idea of just what is going on - thank god im on the other end of the dark tunnel they have to crawl and flail and stumble through

ZZZZZzzzzz

father's day

jony's third birthday

just what kind of son do i have? he sent me this - thank god - i worry so much about everything - about being away - about him - about us - and maybe im reading too much into it, but this simple photo tells me he knows - he remembers - he feels it too:D

writing and writing and quick trip to airpport for autoslalom races - before i could say ouchiewawa i was strapped in and rocketing around the course with some maniac in a wee sports car

spent too long there taking photos and videos and getting the "story" haahaha - just missed my sailboat ride :(

back in office and wrote and wrote - then out to noah's for smoked meat from schwartz's and rye bread from schwartz's and schwartz's pickles too - all squirted together with no name mustard - hahaha- noah brough tvack a whole brisquet from montreal -

i had a great night meeting sandy cove folk - delicious sandwich - had to leave too soon but everyone went to bed - hahaha - heavy rain and fog driving home - writing again for a few hours - then sleep - no further word from friend

ps. that's jony in the front (his 8th bday) with is arms around my neck - i love how JD now known as RVD is about to leap off the couch, love branden's death grip and joles' neutron dance stance - hahaha
happy fathers day yall

mounties at the pines

photos today were all about the uniforms - mounties in red - nuns in blue - soccer players in green - hahaha - the mounties - real cops - are welcoming tourists on a tour bus at the Pines resort

same place as hearings - ive been trying to get this photo for a couple weeks but they always forget to call me - so i missed the press conference to nab this story - work never ceases baby

more stamina today but not much more - panel tough today but not as tough - presentaiosn boring but not as boring - afternoon was open to public - found it a waste of time myself - but others very keen on the process-

after work council - councillors ganged up on bob for something i quoted him as saying - he denied he said it - i kept my mouth shut which i find easy to do when i know im right - hahaha - covered soccer game - no good photos :(

writing :D lotsssssss to do before departure - ack - sleep not going to happen :(

Well, I had to go back a while in this diary to catch up from when I was last here, and I am exhausted from reading about the flurry of activity and creative tension before you got away on your break - you live on your nerves mate, but that's what creative people do, I guess. the first omen

The first omen

on our way to newfoundland, chris and i had a bunch of errands to run in halifax - as we fought our way back out of the city in the middle of rush hour traffic, i spied an american aircraft carrier - wow - just like us - stable, weather any storm, capable of surviving months at sea with no resupply

the second great omen was my boat - i say "my boat" very optimistically - the boat i used for the trip i saw for the first time on june 21- the model of boat - the solstice - yes!

and we did hit it off big time - i cant remember ever feeling so at home in a boat - wow - i can buy her for only $1700... we'll see how my freelancing goes this month...
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Did I read that right, you can get an aircraft carrier for $1700?

I'm hitting up your photostream.. Wow, that is such an excellent adventure, I'm envious! :-)
Jonathan W PRO 11 years ago
cant help myself just cant lol .. I belive that may be a helo carrier not a aircraft carrier still a darn large vessel. Only reason I mention it I spent 6 years on a carrier and that looks a bit different and with the big 1 its either very very very old or its a helo carrier :). Regardless sounds like your having a good trip! enjoy
Hey if that helo carrier is only $1700 I do recommend buying it. You could live on it, freelance and rent out lots of rooms and earn your living that way. :D
And your renters could swab the deck for a deduction on their rent and you'd still make piles of money.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
ok - i dont no what kind of ship it is or where it is from for that matter - it is a big fucking ship okay ? - i imagine (but i could be wrong) she is pretty sea worthy and you can stow a lot of gear into her -

that was omen #1 - i liked seeing a big fucking monster ship the day i set off to send a week on the ocean

the kayak is $1700 you wackos :D
it is a solstice - i first laid eyes on the solstice on the summer fucking solstice - that is cool

geesh civilization is a weirder place than i remembered

PICT0021.JPG

we started the trip (in the rain) in a little arm behind "Bobbet Island" in Burgeo - i knew as soon as we got on the water and started working our way out and through the Islands of Burgeo that kayaking is THE way to see newfoundland - hilariously happy

camera stowed in a pelican case under my skirt between my legs and i didn't have the guts the first day to take it out while on the water - that would change...

Day 56, Saturday, June 23
Emily Storehouse Cove

PICT0052.JPG

Does he look disappointed? The map kinda led him to believe we could up a little farther but it is so hard to be disappointed when in such a wild beautiful place.

One of the first "on water" shots of the trip - ESC was calm - out of the wind and waves - but as you can see from the surface of the water it was raining. In fact it rained every morning. And every night. This might be the last time the camera was dry - you'll see.

Not long after this we made a 2 km crossing which for me a tht time was the biggest crossing id ever made - wind in our teeth, raining horizontal, cold, foggy - chris said put your head down and go boys - so i did - and i got in trouble for getting too far ahead - oops -

we ate lunch in a cave on the rocks teeth chattering so bad i didnt have to think about cheewing at all - and then set up camp in early afternoon in the channel harbour of Deer and Bear Island
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
The adventure starts, accompanied by smart-arse comments from all sides. Really looks wild and rugged, though the weather conditions leave something to be desired.
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
the weather is an interesting thing rob and i could go on for ever but a good buddy of mine said it best in a letter i just received.
the weather's been yucky where he is too and you'd think it would "ruin" his hiking - but he says:

"The fog allows us to notice more of the things
right in front of our noses. Maybe that is for the good too."

That was my experience in Newfoundland - there was so much grandeur that a part of me was thankful to have the power switch dimmed just a bit - had the same experience the first time i rolled into Tdot and believe u me, i was grateful for the warm up period before the full force of Queen Street hit me

and we did have 6 hours of sunshine on a 6 day trip!
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
Hey Mr Riverman...hope the trip was restful for the noggin.

CollardGreens: Oops !
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Hey, that is a good quote... about the fog. That is a lot like what I tell my hearing friends- once I shut the door to a room, and lower the window blinds... My entire world is that room. I don't hear stuff that happens outside, like traffic, people talking, life in general going on outside the little room I've shut myself into.

It's neat to be able to escape like that. Your trip sounds like so much fun to me.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
That scene is beautiful--how can one get disappointed, indeed!

Is pelican-skirting the Newfoundland version of ferret-legging? ;-)
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
so im way behind and i just had to share a couple things in real time - hahaha - er real diary time? - i dunno anyway:

having a great day - coming off a hard week - a week where i was looking forward to getting out of dodge and getting some healing done
met jony and he is so great - showed me some driftwood art he had made which is just so awesome - fantastic actually - and he took me on a tour of the river project - RP 07 - where he is working for the summer

the jony riverwalkers return to their roots - walking through the stream he told me all about his work and struggles and life - i am the happiest man in the world - so proud of him and happy for him and got some good pictures of him

we fed some great huge strong horses in a back pasture and watched them run away winnieing their manes trailing behind them

my son is steady - he holds a peice of rebar like he could kill you with it, a shovel like he could cut down a tree with it - he reaches down and runs his fingers through the water - the water is nice - we should go to the powerhouse - want to old man?

our favourite swimming hole - where u climb and swim and climb and squirm and dive and jump and swim - up the canyon - over waterfalls - along slippery ledges - swim climb - to the big waterfall - that's enough old man - let's go back

after the waterfall it is only an easy swim to the bridge - that's the goal - we always turn back at the bridge - ok - up the waterfall - there are people there

im on top - it's her - as beeautiful as ever - hair longer - a little heavier - looks good on her - there's an easiness to her - oh jesus

cmon jony the bridge is not much farther

she lives 4,500k from here - there are 900,000 people in nova scotia - and yet i knew she was there the minute jony asked me - it's sort of like wasabi - it hurts like hell and then it passes - and a good hangover - let's you know you're in the land of the living - excuse me while i get drunk
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Good reason as any. I know what you're talking about.. wasabi high rocks.

Have a good one Jonathan. See you on the other side.
ebilflindas 11 years ago
Drink it up, Jonatron!
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
aw. you're the most fun to read after a visit from jony. happiest then too. i can picture you smiling as your fingers fly over the keyboard -- your eyes crinkling up in the corners. you probably even pause to throw your head back and laugh a little, don't you? if i'm wrong, don't tell me. i like imagining you as a jocular fellow, tanned in a weather-beaten sort of way, in love with the simpler things life offers you --- nature, family, the occasional meal, etc

Navigating in the fog

PICT0019.JPG

Getting harder to choose photos now as i get braver on the water - if you look at todays photos youll see the lense never dries out - the LCD display which i never use has a constant film of water behind it - same with the viewfinder - i am taking photos mostly on faith

it was raining but at least the fog had lifted somewhat - we made a 1 km crossing this am and could just see the other side - at the end of the day yesterday when brian and i peeked round we could not see across

we handrailed down the coast - meaning we stayed in tight - because of the fog and easterly wind - but we're rewarded by great alcoves, caves, arches, waterfalls, and even a dead whale floating in a cove - when we crossed the 0.75 km mouth of squire cove the fog was thicker again and we could not see anything

when we came round bear head, we were for real on the open ocean - did about 5 km of wide open ocean paddling

Dear Lord, be good to me
the sea is so wide
and my boat is so small.

It was so awesome out there - i couldnt help but start singing - chris and i sang almost the whole way

where it's wave over wave,
sea over bow,
i'm as happy a man
as the sea will allow,
there's no other life
for a sailor like me,
than to sail the salt sea boys,
sail the sea

camped on a small island - did some fishing and hiking - chose this photo from hundreds because you get a glimpse of the "pokey coast" and because the day was all about careful navigation

Day 58 (Day 4 of kayak trip), Monday, June 25
Clapotis

PICT0194.JPG

we put in our longest day yet - on the water at 6 and didn't get off til 6 that night - though we did stop for a couple hours in the village of Grey River - no roads, only access by sea, pop. 150~ or so

the photo above is the best representation of clapotis i have - clapotis is the mixed seas resulting from the refraction (or bounce) of waves off the shore - it is nuts - u just never know where the waves are coming from or which way the water under you is going to move - it made the other guys nervous - it made me giddy

(i can only shake my head - i had my camera out in that crap - if the camera is out, that means my skirt was off - meaning the sea could pour into my cockpit at any moment - im an idiot)

normal practice in clapotis is to paddle offshore but the fog kept us in close - at the end of the day the fog had dropped so low we were literally counting rivers as we searched for the Gulch - the only accessible landing spot along a 20 km stretch of otherwise unbroken cliff (the 9th and 10th rivers past grey river flow into the gulch)

chris fried us up a big scoff of scallops and then he fell asleep on the beach's cobble stones - i was too exhausted to sleep and went swimming instead - then spent the night alone by the fire drinking southern comfort

more waterfalls, welcome to grey river, our camp in the Gulch
