A gypsy outdoors

Gypsy Flores Photography 11:45pm, 19 December 2006
I take mostly photographs of the natural world and hopefully I will be able to post one a day; but I often travel and do not have an internet connection when I do. I defintely have no problem taking photographs everyday.

A test shot for our "borrowed" clothing theme. Me, approaching 58 on February 3, 2008.

After work I went down to Moss Landing and Jetty Road. I met another photographer there, Yoshi (not on flickr) and we discussed cameras, lenses and birds. He teaches Aikido at the university in Santa Cruz but he and his wife live near Watsonville on some nice land with a creek running through it. He regularly sees (and photographs) deer, coyote, racoons, etc. We went to Moss Landing together but the mother otter with a baby wasn't in the harbor close to the road.

My computer is still sitting at the apple repair shop and I have no idea when it will be returned. I leave for North Carolina early Thursday morning so I doubt I will have it before my return.

Went to Twin Lakes beach in the grey and fog. Three snowy egrets and one great egret provided the afternoon spiritual uplift.

Spent the day running around trying to wrap up things before we leave tomorrow. Met Rainey on the beach and we photographed egrets and flying gulls. On the way back we took photos of a butterfly on a passion vine.
I will be in North Carolina until Monday afternoon.

The computer is still in the shop with no word as to when it will be returned.

I am at my sister's house in Asheville North Carolina. We are sitting around talking and drinking a good red wine by the fire.

Too tired to take many photos.

Grey day but my sister and I had fun exploring Asheville--Ariel went off by himself to explore in his own way. In the evening we had an incredible meal in Black Mountain, with my sister, her husband Donnie, her son Jonathan and his wife, Mary Noble and their young son Foster and their one week old baby Lily Noble and my sister's daughter Kyley her her two girls, Sophia and Grace and of course myself and my son Ariel. Family dinner out to celebrate my sister's birthday. I ordered this salmon that was out of this world followed by sharing a key lime pie with Donnie.

Debbie and Donnie are having a party this evening, a Christmas and birthday celebration. I am making Avgolemeno soup (Greek chicken, rice, egg soup) and chili. Also hot apple cider spiced with fresh ginger, orange slices and cinammon sticks.

Went to a dance recital this morning that Grace and Sophia participated in. Took lots of photos of them as I wil also photograph tonight's gathering. The birds seem relatively absent here but tomorrow we will spend the night at the lake house and I anticipate seeing herons etc.

Got to get back to helping out.

We had a long lazy breakfast then went into Black Mountain. Ariel and Kyley went off to Asheville. Donnie took Sophia to a skating party. Jonathan, Debbie and I went to look at property for sale. Some interesting places but I am not ready to nibble much less buy. Debbie and Ariel and I later went out to their lake house to spend the night as it is much closer to Charlotte airport. We had fun sitting around the lake in the dark.

Hey Gypsy - still without keys ?? Damn...bummer - maybe Santa will be good to you. I am making the rounds a little early to thank you for your contribution to my experience on MDPD...I will do it agin next year because of all the fun I had ! Your wildlfie photos and "slowly told story" have been a large pleasure for me...thanks for that - hope to make it into the same longitude and latitude with you at some point ... Happy holidays...

Rainey and I went to Elkhorn Slough in the morning. Absolutely freezing cold. We headed over to an Army Surplus Store in Moss Landing and bought long underwear, warm hats and gloves. Later near Kirby Park we were able to shoot lots of egrets and a red-throated loon. Later we went to Struve Slough and spotted a great blue heron.

Still without keys, Ted, hopefully in a few days though. Thanks.

I have enjoyed the project very much but I do not know if I will repeat it next year.

Too many holiday parties, gatherings and potlucks.

Rained all night and it has been a very grey day. Worked in the morning and then had to report for jury duty. We were excused as at the very last minute the defendent pleaded guilty.

At lunch time I photographed some birds in my garden and lots of raindrops on leaves and stems.

Thanks for ploughing on diligently with the placemarks La M! We are going to have to review a lot of beautiful birds when you do upload.

Whether you're on the diary or not in 2008, I will be following your stream faithfully. Hang on, are you actually a contact? I'm off to check, and correct, if necessary.

Thanks Rob and Ted. I am losing heart that my computer will ever find its way home.

It rained all night and then most of the day. In the late afternoon I went to my chiropractor's and then drove to Jetty Road before dark. There was a snowy egret, brown pelicans and lots of shorebirds.

I will catch up on everyone's diaries when and if my computer ever returns. That is my New Year's Resolution.

One of the things that I had hoped to accomplish this year in my photography is to take better flight shots. Well, maybe next year. :P

Rainey had told me that there was a peregrine falcon that sits in a tree near Twin Lakes Beach.
flickr.com/photos/raineys/2092779162/
flickr.com/photos/raineys/2090583698/

So after doing a garden very close to there, I decided to drive to Twin Lakes Beach and see the action. I looked in the top of a very tall cypress tree and there it was eating a bird. While this shot is too far away for my camera, it marks a special moment for me--my first time seeing a pergrine falcon! i filled up my last memory card and hoped that my computer would be arriving soon. And here it is! i will catch up now and read everyone else's stream in the next few days.

The winter solstice and an almost full moon. I took a walk along the river this evening to catch the last of the light. There was a minus tide and consequently lots of birds--many snowy egrets, gulls, mallards, buffleheads. a blue heron, goldeneyes, coots, and a belted kingfisher. Close to the river mouth the light was golden. Even though better photographers would tell me to crop this photograph, I was trying to catch the light and the water movement when this female goldeneye swam in and added that extra bit of interest.

Happy Solstice everyone

Spent the day running errands and spinning my wheels. Late in the afternoon I went down to Struve Slough for some solitude and quiet. Lots of activity, though! Northern Shovelers, Ross's Geese, Canada Geese, Cinammon Teals, American Coots, and Red-winged blackbirds. A full moon and golden light completed the evening scene--just before the sunset.

Nice to see you back and the diary up-to-date. Now I've got to go back and catch up. I saw a stunning Peregrine Falcon up there, and had to smile at your modesty: "better flight photos", "better photographers". I doubt it, but even the best have to maintain their ambition.

Best wishes for the holidays, and looking forward to following your natural and musical adventures in 2008.

Tonight my son and I are going to have dinner with Rainey and Mike and their house.

Another cold, wintery day. It rained most of the night last night but the day was just cold and grey. I worked in the morning and then took a walk in Neary Lagoon. It was a little dark for photographs but I managed to take photos of American Robins and some reflections of the decidious trees in the water.

Tonight I am doing the African music show on KUSP.

I had just replaced the power chord not that long ago and they are very expensive. i don't want to buy another one.

so goodbye for now, i think.

You can buy them secondhand for MUCH less. Try ebay or one of these used computer vendors... You're right- new ones are stupidly expensive... I'm sorry it happened! :(
thanks. I found a relatively inexpensive one on line and ordered it this afternoon. BUT!! Since i thought it was broken, I though I would try the pliers trick anyway and dang if I didn't fix it and now I am back on line. I am not going to cancel my order as it was pretty darn cheap and I might as well have a back-up.

A little late Gypsy, but Happy New Year. I have just done an in-depth catch-up of all I have missed while you were computerless and I was away. I discovered your diary rather late in the 2007, but having done so, would never miss it. Your posts have been of unfailing quality, sheer genius on occasion, and your insight into the natural world is inspiring.

Interesting to note that you have been posting a lot of water reflections recently, which has been an interest of mine also, in fact I posted a bunch just yesterday.

On now, to 2008!
