Sunrise Smiles

I moved to Paris, from England, in August 2006 with the intention of experiencing life in another country, as well as to improve my French. I anticipated being here for at least a year. Will I still be in Paris at the end of 2007?

As well as providing a structure for documenting 2007, I hope that this project will motivate me to make the most of every day: doing things that will not only make my life more fun, but provide something worth looking at for those browsing through this wee archive.

No worries dude! Yeah, there's some pretty good wine in there - think I'm going to lay it down for a wee while until there's a good event to bring out a bottle :) I predict a few dinner parties - I love cooking!

Thinking can indeed be bad. Silly thoughts. Hmmm. But I shall shove it out of my head with the two-week count-down to Alpe d'Huez! Go hard or go home. Boom.

Queens of the Stone Age - rock-tastic! Ahhh, they bring back memories... :)

LâoH

Work - run - eat. Becoming a bit of a ritual.

But after all that, headed out with an old friend who I hadn't seen for ages and a day.
We went to Café de la Plage and not only discovered that there is a basement which was jam-packed with cool folk, but that a band was playing and they were rather good. OK, I quite liked them. Owen wasn't so keen. Although I admit the singer was a bit pap. They're called Lâoh.

A fun evening.

Goldie Lookin' Chain, clart

Woah that was a random but fun night.

Tom's for dinner which turned into drinks which turned into going to a crazy party near Barbès-Rochechouart (saying that is, for me, as hard as spelling it).

So much fun. Met so many new people, and danced for a very long time. Gin & tonics are tasty.

When we left, I thought it was around three a.m. "We'll take the night-bus" I think. My friend informed me it was six a.m. Métro running again. Ack.

Sunset

Despite getting to bed at around 6.30, I still can't help but wake by 10am. It was a beautiful day and there's something about my body that won't let it waste such conditions...

The market is beau when it's sunny.

A bit of wandering uncovered an amazing little galerie that had some beautiful photographs of India and South-East Asia. The temples of Angkor look unreal. Plans are being formed for a trip later in the year...

After a spot of profiter du soleil I met up with Tom & Paul for a pic-nic on quai de la Seine on Ile de la Cité, which was splendid. Un peu cliché, I admit, but jolly nice.

Then we met up with some of the folk from last night (as well as some new people) and had another big night out.
After only having three and a half hours sleep the night before I managed to make it home by 7am this time. Ooops.

La vie est bonne.

Skate

My body definitely has some sort of self-defence against wasting nice days. Despite getting in at 7am, I was up at 10:30am; the sun shining, the wind blowing, and I'm sure, had it not been for the sound of a far-off manifestation mingling with the traffic, there would have been birds singing, too.

A bit more Calvino in the sun before going for a monster run to, and around, the Bois de Vincennes. I managed to find some places in there where it was possible to forget you're in the city and think of the countryside. Stepping stones over little streams surrounded by trees and long grass. Beautiful.

Following that, I was late to meet some friends so I took to the streets and skated down to meet them, in order to watch England take on France in the Six Nations. We played like le poop in the first half, but salvaged something in the second. Un bon ambience, and Tom has Paul as his slave for twenty-four hours following the win. Heee.

Afterwards, basking in the park at Bercy, it was bliss. Friends, sun, shenanigans. (The most amusing part being Paul & I jumping over the fence to the UGC and climbing up the cat-walks to enjoy the last of the sun from the roof.)

Profiter du soleil.

I know! I read about it in the paper yesterday! Although saying that, I'm far too unfit for that sort of thing...

Alas, it seems not against the wee naps, but I really need to catch up - I'm hoping tonight I'll be able to avoid people (namely mes colocs) and have an early night!

Exit

In the evening I went to see some contemporary dance/physical theatre which was part of the EXIT festival at the Maison des Arts in Créteil. The piece was called To File For Chapter 11, performed by a Dutch group, T.R.A.S.H. and was really good - I can't say I understood it all, my knowledge and experience of such things are very limited, but I really enjoyed it. And the music was fantastic.

The Animanga! exhibition, which accompanied it, had some ace pieces in. This is a particularly poor photo, but I was enjoying the art too much to be snapping away - more of an after-thought really...
Definitely recommend going to check it all out!

Get home in the hope of an early(ish) night, to find many a person round at the flat. Still no sleep for me....
educated boot [deleted] 11 years ago
Yeah Maïa you really should go talk to your neighbour ;-)

As for you Phil I completely understand the fact that it mght be annoying as hell sometimes to have flatmates , but then again they might help you when you're feeling blue ...

Man I need to take another WE away from this place. Wanna go out for a pint one of these nights mate ?
~ Phil Moore 11 years ago
Ah, but blue is a silly colour to be feeling! If I'm feeling down, a session of running/skating/biking/snowboarding should resolve it ;) But nah, it's not so bad living with them...

Pint would be good, although I appear to be super busy at the mo'. Do you fancy going to the Inrocks Indie night tomorrow at the Maroquinerie maybe?

Wheel

A complete mis-representation of the day, but I didn't take my camera out!

Was going to go and (finally) see An Inconvenient Truth but after skating to the cinema (soooo much fun) I found it was sold-out. Foresight and planning are not my strong-points.

Instead, I got a call from a girl I met at the weekend seeing if I wanted to meet-up, so we went for wine in Montmartre. Mega.

Skating down the steep, steep streets of the quartier down to Pigalle was awesome fun, if not a little scary.

Hmmm, well this day wasn't so great, and this day was particularly shitty. But I guess that when things aren't great then I either don't talk about it (a psychiatrist could have a field day) or I do other things which are fun and hence out-shine the crappiness. Boom.

And right now I'm annoyed. Well, ish. It's so bloody nice outside and I'm stuck in a bloomin' office!! Someone must wanna just pay me to have fun so I don't have to work? No-one? Ahhh, go on... ^_^

And well they even made me wait till 3 am to have lunch!
But looking at the bright side of it, When I was coming back just before 4, I went through a "manifestation" (how do you say that??) of archeologists !!! So I just had to aim and shoot ! hehe

Well I couldn't do as many as I wanted cause I had to go back to work but hey, if I just went out at the normal time...or if I stayed at home not working ;-)
On the other side, there are a few sad things but I'm not going to do my thread in yours, am I ? ;-P

Possibly the best night-out I have ever had.

Some friends and I went to the Vrai-Faux Mariage de la Caravane Passe at the Cabaret Sauvage. The music was awesome (particularly the double-bass busting-out a Cypress Hill riff!); the stage-show was great and the atmosphere immense.

I danced so much. So so much. And grinned even more. And there was even a spot of crowd surfing. Boy was I sweaty.

Gueule de bois. I drank far too many white russians last night...

But after crashing at the party, I did get a lift home in the morning - driving around Paris seems bizarre! Not really knowing anyone with a car it's not something I ever do.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing with friends and also processing a monster image for the next flickr@paris expo - working with a giant scan of a lomo shot - not sure how well it's going to work though :-/

The evening culminated in watching A Bittersweet Life. Woah.

Eskimo Friends

The Damien Rice concert was fucking amazing.

I've wanted to see him live for so long, and I finally got the chance. Shame the venue (Grand Rex) was so large, but I guess in this day-and-age you're not going to find him playing a nice small venue.

Lisa Hannigan was not in the band though, which was slightly disappointing. Ho hum.

But he was awesome - not only performing the songs, including a wonderful, completely un-plugged recital of The Blower's Daughter, but also in-between: the quips in his Irish-French, the explanation of where the songs came from, just, everything...

And the performance of Cheers, Darlin' as his final song... Oh my. Everyone on stage (including The Magic Numbers who were the support act), red-wine in hand. I haven't been able to stop singing the song to myself, since.

It is music that makes you want to be lugubrious so you can enjoy it even more. But right now I'm content to simply be happy listening to it.

The Stars of the City/Chess-board Roads

Met a friend for a drink and we watched La Vie Des Autres. A very good film, albeit disturbing. The thing I found most shocking was the freedom of information after the fall of the wall... I wonder how accurate a portrayal of that era it was?

The photo was an oh bugger, I need to take a photo today kinda shot as I walked home...
But saying that, in a few days, I shall be escaping the artificial stars of the city's street-lamps to find those real suns twinkling and winking at the Alps ^_^

First day of boarding.
Heading up high.
Anticipation builds.

Saying that, I did manage to slam pretty hard at the end of the morning, mashing my face up a bit and popping my shoulder again which had only just recovered from the injury in Les Arcs. Looking down to see red snow isn't so great. Only a bleeding lip though. C'est la vie.

Fresh

All Friday evening it snowed.
A lot of fresh stuff was laid down.
This paves a rather gloriously white way to big smiles.

We were due to leave on the Saturday morning.
We had to vacate the apartment by 8.40am.

I stood in the car park, exchanging my jeans for board-pants.
Swapping the t-shirt for a Howies base-layer.

We bought another day's lift-pass.

We headed high.

Fresh snow is an unparalleled joy.

One which leads to a rather late return back to the real world.

And a rather smelly one, as four people squeeze into a car without showering after exerting themselves at 3300m.

Next Winter seems an awfully long time away...

Nah - that's what it's for! Saying that, I was more worried about dropping it whilst hanging out of the car window on the autoroute!

It was only my little point-and-shoot IXUS which I just popped in my jacket pocket. Although it did manage to bruise my chest a bit one time when I crashed. Grrrr.

(I took a few on my SLR but they were all back in town because I didn't want to carry around my argentique whilst riding. Need to get that film developed now...)

~ Phil Moore 11 years ago
(Assuming my translation of argentique is correct: a film SLR?)

Ummm, it's just that mine is pretty old - from the mid 80's - so it needs to be handled gently ;)

But the reference to not wanting to carry it around was more that I didn't want the weight in my bag and another large pointy object to break a few ribs when I (inevitably) fall - I've made that mistake before and it hurts!

We wandered, we ate sushi, we wandered some more, via a bar, and then went to see La Cité Interdite in a cinéma at Odéon. Lovely.

An Air of Hedonism

Going to a drum&bass night which doesn't even begin until midnight is a bad idea when you have to get up for work at 7am the following morning.

Steph, dancing away. An air of hedonism to this shot methinks.

Spring

After a hard day at work (cf. yesterday night) a chilled evening was called for.
Wandering around the Promenade Plantée, Bastille (new CDs, shoes and wallet - not so good at not spending money) and reading by the last of the days sun sprawled on the grass at Place des Vosges.
Then cook up a monster piece of tuna and relax with new music...

What great photos you've been posting -- love the daffodils and love that you put them in B&W

Thank you very much! Although with the daffodils, I fear I'm not being as creative as you give me credit for - the "black and white" is just a result of taking the photo into the sun - it's still colour! (They weren't traditional, vibrant yellow daffs, they were the paler, almost white variety.)

Kiss Ma' Teeth

After going out for an awesome run around the Bois de Vincennes, post-work, I headed-out for Owen's leaving party. He's moving back to the UK... Drinking accompanied by the cool jazz-manouche of the not-visited-for-a-long-time Marquise bar.

Cheers buddy! Although this morning they've been written with a fuzzy, tired head...

Ooooh, what have you been up to then? Sure, let me know when you're free! Think I've got a couple of things on this week but sure we can find some time.

Deauville

Easter Day

Leaving Paris for a day by the sea.

After battling through the atrocious Parisian traffic, Laurene & I headed up to Deauville to profiter du soleil and dip our toes in La Manche.

A fishy meal in Honfleur topped off a wee trip to Normandie rather nicely before a late drive back to the city. Funny how the peripherique isn't so busy at 2am.

Bienvenue L'Été

A beautiful day in the city.

A spot of wandering, a lot of eating (oh, how I love La Loir Dans La Théière!) and even some baking.
The last of the sun was enjoyed whilst munching tarte et gateau: a picnic au bord de la Seine.

Coucher du Soleil

I went out running after work. I love these Summer evenings we're already having.

I'm usually against camera phones - they generally take crappy photos and I hate the way that a sea of hands clutching phones goes up at any event.

But the other day I had to get a new phone - my old one died. Seeing as my iPod was stolen a while ago, and I'm pretty skint so can't afford to replace it, I figured I'd give one of the Sony Ericsson 'Walkman' phones a go.

This means that I actually had a phone on me whilst running, as I was using it to listen to some awesome Drum&Bass.
This meant I also had a camera with me.

And the sunset was rather pretty.

Had it not been for camera-phones, this post would have probably reflected the curry I cooked or the chatting about literature, art and life with Steph, which is how I spent the remainder of the evening.

Maybe they're not so bad, after all.

Run!

Another lazy day in terms of taking a photograph.

But not in terms of activity.

After enduring work all day (oh the sun is an evil temptress whilst stuck in an office) I got home and went out for a run.
And it ached from the outset. Silly idea. But up to the Bois de Vincennes, un tour de la lac and back home to Gare de Lyon.

Then just enough time to whip up some cous-cous before heading out for some drinks with a friend.

The conclusion of our ramblings? Women suck. Bikes rule.

Does somebody want to give me a BMX please?

*KILLER* sunset on the 10th. Did you pick up a dslr yet??!??

Hmmm, alas no. I have been spending all my pennies on snow and mountains o_O I really need to get one sorted. Though I have been churning through a couple of rolls of film on my argentique.

Cool...I have been doing the same with my Mamiya. 6x7 transparencies are just awesome to behold! Check with photogrin -- he is in love with his Leica now & may want to sell his 5D... (waiting for his response... ;-)
