With all of the news I heard of people dying over the last week, I guess it was only a matter of time until it touched me. My friend and colleague was killed yesterday. Apparently, (updated) a car was chasing an SUV that was fleeing a hit & run -- 85-90 on city streets the SUV struck his car and also a pedestrian. He died on the scene. This man LIVED life. He sucked the very marrow from life. He ran the LA marathon last year, with a fairly respectable time, with no training. He complained about his shins hurting -- ya think!!!! Climbed Mount Whitney, Hiked the most difficult trail back up the Grand Canyon -- That's the way he was -- he just did it. A devoted friend, husband and father and just an all round great guy. I'll miss him. I'm trying not to be sad, but i am.

It touches us all, doesn't it?
Perhaps that's why we're still not home yet--that crazy weather-burst yesterday kept me & my son from driving home. Well, actually, it was my Mom who insisted we just stay the night to wait out the flurries on the Grapevine.

And re: your whining--I'm glad to see you're human, T! We've all got a little bit to whine about--like Nika sings:
E'rybody got their something...

Oh, and did you say panang? Girl, you're speaking to me now!

And that bookcase...I could spend days just admiring its contents!

Hi Bella, so sorry about your friend - that kind of senseless death is the worst. And I'm sure that puts any unjustified uncertainty about you looks in perspective. For the record, I think you are a gorgeous young chick.
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
You hit the nail on the head, Rob. I actually blogged about that aspect of it too, but deleted it. (you see i edited it 2 hours after i posted it) My colleague and were called into a conf. call today and a vendor announced they were leaving the company tomorrow (trying to let us down easily) -- it really was no big deal to us after hearing the news we had yesterday --
If i could take back my little self indulgent pity party, I would, but it's done and here in print. Today does it seem insignificant -- hell yeah. One thing has remained consistent in my life -- EVERY single time I start down that path of "woe is me" the Universe/God places a glaring example in my face that humbles me and makes me count the multitude of blessings that I have. And I am grateful for that reality check.

Thank you Allan -- I think I'm banned from Explore -- I swear, I have none... also, I found that I don't come up in flickr search.... gotta figure that one out. I'm been noted by the admins for some reason -- oh well.

Emil -- I love me some Nikka Costa! Yay! Hope you're home or on your way back safely. always listen to mom ;-)

Aw you guys, my books are my other children -- they're an extension of me ... and Buns... there's some old some new and all kinds of stuff... i will do a more hi res shot to satisfy curiousity about what's up here.... carlos casteneda, kahlil gibran, nitsche, stephen hawking and king, anne rice, anais nin, henry miller, shakespeare, clive barker, malcolm x, john irving, krishnamurti, j california cooper, michael crichton... alan moore, and more....

Bella, my attention was drawn a few days ago to some changes in the Flickr rating system, probably to get in line with Yahoo's ideas of propriety. On "Your Photos" page, look at "You/Your Account", and the top line will read something like "Your account has been reviewed as safe by Flickr staff. (What does that mean?)" with a link to a description of the policy. Sadly, I suspect you may have run foul of the censors in some way, perhaps some of the delicious images in one of your sets. Perhaps Buns can fill in some more of the detail.
Rob
bunæn PRO 11 years ago
Not really, other than to publish the link you will find if you are considered "Safe" (read "non-NIPSA"). flickr.com/help/filters/#252 .

As Rob said, a few days ago everything changed. It used to be, if you violated Flickr's "Community Guidelines"--showed a nipple (nipples attached to man-boobs are okay, "naturally"); a butt; a pube; a downloaded web image; a screen shot; a scanned drawing; a scanned book or magazine cover (actually a scanned "anything other than a photo"); an illustration; in fact even an "over-photoshopped" image, and someone complained, or the "wrong" Flickr admin (there are only about 9 that count) saw it, your account could end up "Not In Public Search Area" (NIPSA), UNLESS you made the image "Private" "Friends Only" or "Family Only".

This meant you and everything you have posted was excluded from Flickr searches and "Everyone's Photos". You would get no warning, from Flickr, and really have no way of even knowing it happened, except the way you did--check to see if you show up in search, explore, or scout.

This might seem a reasonable alternative to outright censorship, i.e. deletion, but of course so accounts were deleted, and the "Rules" were opaque and arbitrarily enforced.

For an example of arbitrariness, it seems if you (a woman--man-knockers are always in good taste) flash a little nip and you are young--I mean really young-looking-even child-like--and thin, and pale, even wan, and not engaging in themes of abuse or physical injury/"abnormality" your account might be "immune" from NIPSA, no matter how bodacious and nipple-strewn your chest may be.

But if you are older--you look to be over 19, and maybe the wrong tinge, and especially if there is something wrong--abuse, illness, disability--you could count on being NIPSA.

The only thing you could do, was mark all your "objectionable" photos (of course you were never given any real guidance here--you couldn't look to Miss Aneila's stream for guidance-she was famously immune from NIPSA) "Private", "Friends" or "Family", or delete them. Then, go hat in hand to Flickr and ask for a review.

I did this, because I was NIPSA from the first. Who, me? Yeah, and for good reason--my huge collection of pulp fiction and magazine covers--nothing "dirty" like a stray nipple. In my case it made sense. Nobody wants to do a search of "Pulp" and come up with 5,000 of my magazine covers, when all they really wanted was a nice shot of Florida Orange Juice (TM).

Nowaday, NIPSA has been replaced with "Moderate" or "Unsafe."

I gotta go now, and this is probably more than you want to know already. But if you have any further interest, there is a raging controversy that has been raging since Yahoo took over, and, well just get me started on that, if you dare.
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
That is actually not too much information at all, Buns. It looks like I'm Safe and NIPSA and will maybe need to go through my "flesh" set and mark some for friends only.... yay, i guess i'll get a bunch more friends LOL.

one more scoop of reality this week. We called a colleague who's been transferred to tell her about our mutual friend's death, and she had to tell us that she just found out this week that she has cancer -- in her lymph nodes, breast, liver and pelvic bones.... Stephen's death didn't register the same with her for obvious reasons -- she's dealing with her own mortality and for now they haven't told her a lot.

I posted a picture in tribute to my late friend, (Stephen Anthony)
-- I was fortunate to know him.

Came again to read a bit more, haven't seen all of it yet, have to go and get my kids, so I will come again soon to see if I can catch up with you.

Have to say that most of your shots were just awesome, faved some of them, really great and nice flower shots and your shoes, high heels make me want to wear some one day. I don't have any high heels shoes or sandals, I think that's because I'm always going to climb or walk in the woods or in the beach and I get used to wear some boots to make my feet confortable. One of these days I'll get a pair of high heels for me, my kids would just love it, they're always asking why I don't wear them.

Something else I loved in here were the pictures of clothes and drawers, that's a nice way to have the t-shirts packed.... and now I'm still reading the entry with the bibliotheque picture so, I'll say goodbye for now, will come soon to finish my reading.

Yes the truth is out LOL - I am an Epicurean -- (perhaps arguably, a hedonist)

actually that gives me a good idea for a set of pictures, thanks Rob....

yes, emil -- yesterday was definitely a long day..... the memorial was stirring and emotional and a real testament to the long reach that Stephen had.
i talked to his mother afterwards and told her i recognized what a wonderful home he must have grown up in to become the man that he was. That she planted seeds in him that flourished into a beautiful garden and we all received bouquets from that garden.

the JG concert was not smaltzy (I was thinking it might be borderline John Tesh, but I was prepared to endure for my Nana's sake) The songs I expected to hear (and were likely played at your grandma's service) were absent and he played more of his recent albums -- to be sure, there were Italian and Spanish Andrea Boccelliesque epic orchestrated ballads. Two of the songs I liked were February Song, In Her Eyes & Remember when it Rained -- others I don't know what the titles were. He was a good sport and interacted well with the audience. Angelique Kidjo (love her) came on and did a version of Pearls (Sade's song) that was really beautiful. His voice is remarkable.

Yes, DDA, we have great weather here in So. California. During the winter months I haven't talked about it much, feeling like I shouldn't gloat when many of you flickr folks are piled under coats and mufflers fighting snow and sleet.

Thanks Ali & Satrina -- :-)

Today I'm going to remember what I walked away with in yesterday's memorial -- Live each day to the fullest -- climb the mountain, sing the song, visit those I care about, express my art -- spread some love around and don't waste time nit picking small stuff -- nothing new, but renewed determination to live a life well lived that leaves those behind with smiles and good memories of me.

Thank you all for your comforting well wishes. This MDPD 2007 group has introduced me to some very extraordinary people I would have not had the opportunity or inclination to explore. Hey, Epicurean, that's Greek! So I looked up Epicurianism (hedonism too), and I find it very interesting:

"For Epicurus, the highest pleasure (tranquility and freedom from fear) was obtained by knowledge, friendship, and living a virtuous and temperate life. He lauded the enjoyment of simple pleasures, by which he meant abstaining from bodily desires, such as sex and appetites, verging on asceticism. He argued that when eating, one should not eat too richly, for it could lead to dissatisfaction later, such as the grim realization that one could not afford such delicacies in the future. Likewise, sex could lead to increased lust and dissatisfaction with the sexual partner".

Sounds eminently sensible to me! Although I have not always been virtuous, or temperate, I'm afraid. But it's something to aim for.

And I associate myself 100% with your last paragraph.

Nana picked it, I told her it was violent, she sort of poo-pooed that and so we saw that instead of Reign Over Me (which we'll see later this week) Her first comment afterwards was, that was terribly violent. Yep. About 95% of the movie is fighting... but you gotta love the abs on those guys! I liked the look of the film -- the flatness of the color - - it worked for me.

So on the way home, I snapped this shot so I wouldn't be stuck at home on yet another night looking around for something to shoot :-)
