Well, the burning questions seems to be--how was the book and did you finish in time. I am in a book club too-but we read books in french (!!) and I just finished Irène Nemirovsky's Suite Française.

BellaGaia says:

Well I finished my book this morning. as you could see last night i was on about page 50 or so before i went to bed. got up at 5ish and read till i was finished at about 8 or so. It's a footsoldier's story and you may find today's photo ironic in light of my having read that book today....

my family is from oakland, so i've heard about BPP my whole life essentially. I wouldn't recommend it as the definitive story of the BPP -- one man's story who was in close contact with leaders of the party, but it mostly talks about his role in securing arms and day to day activities. It made me want to read Elaine Brown's book who was Chairman after Bobby Seale -- especially to get a woman's perspective. A quick read and I'm ready for bookclub tonite....

One of the things i took away from the story is that (and this is where my photo is relevant) the ideals of an philosophy can be well intentioned, noble even, but once it is in the hands of everyday people to carry out it changes and often becomes something very different -- in fact sometimes the very opposite of what was originally dreamed.

I would say that could also be said of the foundation of our United States -- I won't go into a long monologue of the foul conditions under which this country was founded and developed or how history is crafted and omits certain truths... I'm not a big fan of how they "discovered" a land that had millions of inhabitants already...

but i will say that human beings are pretty basic in nature at their core. We want a better life for our children than we had -- certain liberties and opportunities. That is something that this flag stands for and something that men and women are dying for today in far away lands whether the directors of those actions are right or wrong, I stand behind those footsoldiers and I believe the fundamental ideaology behind this flag that continues to have people flock to these shores. (bellagaia hops off the soapbox)

off to my bookclub -- power to the PEOPLE!

Tonight at the UK-Florida basketball game, instead of just one person or chorus singing the National Anthem, the entire crowd was invited to sing. I am not a fan of civil religion, but tonight I sang the words, and I meant them.

I have issues with our administration, but I believe in the soldiers who are far from home.

Anyway, great photo.

I enjoyed your soapbox rant. I'll keep it short to say I agree. And you'd have to be an ass not to support the troops, no matter what your political beliefs are...

Soapbox rants need to be aired sometimes. You said ...under which this country was founded and developed or how history is crafted and omits certain truths... Have you read (or heard) Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States"?
This taught me that "history books get written by the victors", and all the implications.
Seeing all the approving posts, I thought I should mention the daily program "Democracy Now!", it is available on a lot of radio, cable and satellite transmissions in the US, I get the web podcast everyday. And then there's a great source of information/opinions at Common Dreams
My reaction to your We want a better life for our children than we had is to say everybody wants this. With 6 billion people on earth, I think it's a good thing to ask if "better life" means a bigger SUV, more toys, bigger hamburgers, quicker changing cellphones, more ice-cream...
Your qualification of certain liberties and opportunities shows you've thought about these things, but I'm quite convinced the majority of your fellow countrymen haven't...

As to supporting the troops, the best support you can give them is cut the funding for the war and bring them home. There's enough money in the pipeline to bring them home with not a single cent more going to the Shrub's war budget.
Impeach the bastard, but I fear it may be too late already...

I'll add a short note about troop support and then shutup. Bring them home. When they come home - meet them at the plane and hold them close. Be patient with them - it will take time to be calm again.

I came back from Vietnam (a equally unpopular war) to an empty airport...Oakland as a matter of fact.

There is nothing the returning soldier wants more than to normalize his/her life and life will never be normal again for them. Be patient.

Thank you for reminding me about Common Dreams. It's been a while since I've visited there--my first exposure to CD was a brilliant article written by Arundathi Roy. Here in San Diego, the only broadcast of Democracy Now is put out by Free Radio San Diego, a true and literal pirate radio station. They've been shut down about three times now by the FCC, but they're able to bounce back each time thanks to bunches of support.

Lovely sentiments, Teresa. I appreciate sincere, heartfelt, and examined patriotism.

Great points all of you. There is much to be said on this topic, on how man perceives hi/her freedom and what morals and principles we so comfortably forget about and which we choose to stand up for. Too many times the true values on which a country, any country is founded on fall into oblivion.
I think a little re-dimensioning from time to time, mentally, is a good thing.... remembering we're just one small dot in a huge planet, remembering that there are people who are still suffering and fighting for those basic principles and comforts we so take for granted.

I struggled with putting in this photo because how can I glibly type in a couple paragraphs all that needs to be said on the point -- however, I am glad that it created conversation. Dialogue is good -- difference is good. Sunshinecity -- you bring up an excellent point -- we're one small dot in a huge planet -- when you extrapolate that theory out into the universe it is mindblowing and makes you wonder why we get so riled up over the small things. Speaking of people suffering -- this week a paraplegic was dumped in skid row by Hollywood Presbyterian
Hospital -- this is outrageous! How can this happen in the same society where people spend $20,000 on their dog houses dangit -- i knew i wasn't going to be able to just take pretty pictures and keep my mouth shut.....

Ebilflindas and Parascuba -- I'm familiar with Common Dreams -- great site doing great work.

I agree with Leesure, ParaScuba and Collard Greens -- let's bring our troops back home.... soon!

AliThinks, Magpie & Satrina & everyone -- thank you for speaking up and adding your thoughts on the subject also....

Collard Greens -- thank you for the perspective of a soldier... and thank you for fighting in vietnam -- you're right there were no parades and public welcome home's for the fighters of that war.

Today is my dad's birthday -- remember him "tattoo toes" just did chores and errands today.... baked bread, made some beans , helped my daughter with her project, figured out what recipe to use to make cookies on a stick for her class (you'll see those later this week undoubtedly) got pissed off that i haven't rested this weekend and i'm back on the grind in the morning..... went to Home Depot to check out paint for my painting project next weekend. I'm tackling my room because i have a new bed being delivered the following week, so it's a good opportunity to paint after the old one is gone and before this one comes...... i know what i want, the shades are so subtly different, though,...

Bunaen -- Spent time in your set last nite -- Julie Newmar Rocks -- I love the art school girls story, I'm taking my time going through it -- more today.

Collard Greens -- Fear Not, the pink and green is for my daughter. My color is like the picture under the paint -- darker, muted walls with dark trim. I have black (not lacquer) furniture that i want to keep and i have a kazillion sets of sheets of different colors so there's where i pick up my color --

Iramiro -- I'm like you, my current color in my room is "italian paper" -- a fancy name for offwhite -- it's taken 10 years to decide what color i wanted and to do it. the rest of the house, i pretty much am fine with the colors -- mostly museum white because there's already so much for the eye to take in.

I don't know why you say they're underwhelming, other than the fact that some of them are "broken", and even that 's not anything major in the life of a cookie...

Going online to avoid doing something else is not any worse than watching TV or reading a book to the same end. As long as you're conscious of your motivation and know where your responsabilities lie, it's YOUR life. Relaxing is important too...

As to the photo on Explore, I'm surprised, I would have thought your self-portrait might have made it there. I'm sure a variation on the pointy-boots theme would get attention...

yeah, you're like the group muse now that guru is gone (hopefully temporarily) LOL --

ParaScuba -- (bella lays back, puts her hands behind her head and throws her feef up on the couch) well, it's like this -- I have this terrible issue with perfection. especially with things i create. that's part of the reason i'm doing this group to get over that. if they were just to eat, that would be cool, but I had major Martha Stewart Hopes for these things! they were to be dipped and sprinkled, bagged, ribboned and tagged and look like valentine cookie cherubs had dropped them into the classroom. Do the girls care? Probably not. does my daughter? Definitely not? Am I paralyzed and not sending these undercooked looking bad textured cookies into the universe? Yes.

solution. i'm buying some ready-made cookie dough today and baking some damn cookies and dipping them like I planned!!!!!

ps.... i was online while watching tv , tivo'ed of course, and reading magazines -- hows that for multitasking time wasting -- and i agree everybody needs down time. I needed it last nite.

I sent out a link to about 500 of our top executives yesterday before i went home -- i got a call before I walked in my door that there were problems and some people couldn't open the database (that's the short, no whining, version of the story) -- I think that's why I was trying to escape.....I hate when that happens!!!!

I'm still basking in the glow from all the luv everybody showed me yesterday.... thank you. My daughter made one of THOSE (you know those comments, the teenage, i'm totally unaware ) comments last night as we were coming home. She commented about how she'd received valentines from her grandmother, nana, godmother and her dad, but she didn't get anything from me (WHAT TH'!!!!) I didn't miss a beat, I told her,( yes you did, you got 40 valentines from me." One for you and 39 of your friends. THE idea! I told her no worries, this was my last year preparing those. Next year she's in middle school and she's on her own. I think then they can just give it to whomever they want. Now, if you bring one, you have to bring enough for everybody.

This morning I awakened for the last time in my bed. (way too early -- 4:30; so i decided to finish watching "little miss sunshine" and "the illusionist") Before we left for school/work, we dumped the bed on the curb. Before the new bed arrives, i'm doing some "fix up work" to my room -- you saw the paint. I begin tomorrow. It's also a nice chance to clear out stuff and move things that I don't use. I looked over and saw my stuffed bedside bookshelf -- Can I possibly be reading all of those books at one time!!!??? What a good opportunity to start over. So this is one last shot of the old.... (you can tell a lot about a person by the books they read -- I wonder what mine say about me.....)

Lalalian -- well, last night i slept on the pull out sofa in my den -- fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, i was so tired that I couldn't tell you if it was comfy or not -- it was just flat and had a comforter on top of it -- i was out like a light as soon as my head hit the pillow.... crickets seems to be the metaphor of the moment in my office -- we go through cycles

Sunshine, well if THAT made you lol, I've got some areas that would knock your socks off -- look in my my kitchen How's that for clutter -- go ahead, you can say it -- I have too much stuff!

Here, once kids get past elementary school age, it's more of a personal holiday, but I think we still include friends a bit as far as distributing candies and sweets. For sure, retailers expect you to celebrate with everybody (that's the American way, isn't it -- spend spend spend over some stupid made up HOLIDAY!!!!) because they have greeting cards for everyone you know under the sun -- makes you think about those old lyrics "can't buy me love" well, apparently you can......

stephen king accidentally aroused me. i was reading Bag of Bones.. in the story a writer named mike was missing his dead wife. he was holding a picture of her in his hand. he was remembering the way the fabric of her bikini top clinged to her, as she dripped lake water on the wooden deck. he imagined himself gently suckling the moisture out of it while she wore it. ...heat .. skin ... then he used the word 'fuck' in my very favorite context.

instant. boner. now .. it takes a lot to shame me, but i have to admit that being sexually aroused by a stephen king novel got that job done. the shame train rolled in immediately and even though i was sitting alone in my favorite room ...my cheeks got hot and i slammed the book closed. this is all true.

p.s. i keep my vibrator in a sock next to my bible. jesus doesn't care.

Bella, taking a break from washing down the floor molding in her room, always easily distracted by the shiny thing in the corner, runs to the bookshelf in her den and pulls down her copy of Bag of Bones and flips through the 529 pages idly looking for the passage Glory mentions. a futile task. Still distracted, she recalls dim details of a deliciously sordid past and vaguely recollects soaked panties sucked ardently by a paramour.... ah those were the days.....

phew, where was I..... damn, do not let me go there when I have a room to be painted..... by the way -- fuck is one of my favorite multipurpose words.... verb, noun, adverb, adjective -- quite functional for the lazy linguaphile. I love your confession -- it's all good!

Jesus is happy you're not out exposing yourself to who knows what! Yay, for rechargeable batteries! Makes me a nicer person to be around. okay, we're about to head into TMI zone..... back to work.

Enjoy that new bed, and the chance to clean things out and start over.

There is something very therapeutic about throwing lots of stuff away and uncluttering your space.

My favorite King book is probably "The Stand." I haven't read all of his newer work, though. I think the last one was "Bag of Bones" or the one about the little girl and the baseball player...

Bella, those smokin' shoes are so freakin' pointy. Don't want to cross you when you're wearing them, that's for sure.

Glory -- thanks for helping me get through that first day -- I pretty much got all the walls done that first morning and did the trim that night and the next day when it was light. Since then, I've moved things back in the room and done a little shopping (new book case, and looking for a new LCD 32 in flat screen). I had an epiphany while painting ... okay maybe epiphany is a little over the top.... but a reality hit me.

In short -- This is my real life, not a practice round and there are some truths that I need to accept. Honestly, this isn't the life I wanted for myself, or the life that I thought I'd have. My life isn't disappointing, not at all, I have a good life, it's just very different than I thought it would be. I think in the midst of looking for this other life to show up, I have sort of been "making do" along the way. Time to change that attitude.

Allan -- the cleaning out has been fun -- somehow I ended up with three empty drawers in one of my dressers -- that's pretty cool (NO, I"m not going to shop and fill them up)

Ali -- I'm also a big Stand fan too. I also read all of Anne Rice's work, but I'm behind. Those books are in my library in my den....

Magpie -- you don't know the half of it.... and I couldn't tell ya, cuz, I'd have to kill ya...... LOL

Bunaen -- seriously, None of them?

Jmarcriechow --- ROFL....

Jissy -- I'll have pix up soon -- I'll probably link you into my picasaweb album rather than post them here. My flickr stream is already suffering from blog syndrome.....All it needs is some stickers and cute cutouts and it would be scrapbook ready lately! Where is the ART!!!!!

canyon of clouds

I went out for coffee and a bookshelf (40 miles from my house) and came to this shopping mall called Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. I've never been there.... It's like a retail Disneyland. Every store I could think of lined up on streets like Mainstreet USA. In fact, that's the name of the street that runs through the property. I've got to go back. I only went to Starbucks and West Elm. my bookshelf I got the short version. Anyway, there were these amazing clouds overhead to the east as the sun was setting to the west. I clicked off two shots and my battery went dead -- wouldn't you know it..... I didn't capture what was there in reality -- too bad, it was really extraordinary.

Wow, those are some beautiful clouds. Looks more like a painting than a photo. I think you captured it quite nicely.
