definitely more handsome than R.G., pornstache or no : )
I got my first gray at 20, so here at 36 I 'm more than 2/3 so, but not ready to show it. (except in the thick of the back of my head where I do a lousy job with the dye deposit.)
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
* bella whips out her rubber glves and mixes up a bowl of custom blended dye to brush into the back of jelliajamb's hair.

I've been dying my hair in some form or fashion since i was 12. my first dye job was pouring abottle of peroxide into my hair -- i ended up with lovelyish orange streaks. it's been a fun journey. i wasn't ready to go white either. i think mine is like Garet's -- maybe not quite as grey. but now it just make the dye look like it's naturally highlighted. it's part of the reason i keep it so short, it keeps it healthy because i dye like every few weeks or so,

cuties, the both of them. number one makes my heart skip a couple of more beats than michael does, though. (even though i think michael is closer to my age?)
BellaGaia PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by BellaGaia (member) 11 years ago
michael was a stunner (i gotta find the portfolio pix i did of him) -- is kinda in a period of letting himself "go" a bit (hey i've been there too). Garet turned 40 last year (he's the total pkg-- smart, good looking, great heart), I think Michael is around 35 or 36.
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
i think Garet would call a lady "darling" while he traced her collarbone with one masculinely slender finger. i think michael may be the kind of guy who winks chummily and says "babe"
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
ok, let me just pluck the eyes from my head, because they've been contaminated forever -- I SOOOOOo do not see them in that way! Garet is so not MR. Suave... Michael probably does say "babe" eeeww, yuck!

all mine are half and i love em... in fact, the only gramma i spent time with was my stepfather's mom but that made no difference to me, I love her no matter what. It was kinda heartwrenching -- when we finally had a sort of conversation about her son not being my dad (my mom WAS married to him, afterall) she's seemed kind of tentative like I was going to reject her. NO WAY. But I guess you could understand her thinking that maybe it could have been a possibility.

Ahh so, I knew there was a reason. I don't know if it's a coincidence but I've noticed that mixed race children often grow up to be beautiful people. and I'm not just saying that.
I have many family friends who's parents come from different countries/backgrounds and for some reason I think widening the gene pool helps to create an interesting "mix"...
Yeah not very scientific but hey...

I'd LOVE to do what you suggest Bella, lay on the ouzo and Greek food and be a good listener. Do your best - Collard Greens is dropping hints about a Greek excursion in September, Sunshinecity is bringing a tribe of glamorous Romans (August probably, when all the other Italians come, with their big camper vans), and who else? ItinerArts, but he's talking 2008, after the baby comes.

If you can talk Glory into coming also, life will be perfect. Buns and Becky also, and then maybe SSB will be tempted out of the frozen North. Nah, I'm just fantasizing again.

Sunshine, if you haven't done so already, check out Bella's set called We Are Family. When she showed us snatches of her family way back at the beginning of this project, I was fascinated. I think you're right about the attraction of children of mixed families. I come from a country with a very heterogeneous population, and even the absurd apartheid laws could not stop them mingling and producing beautiful mixed offspring. My hometown of Cape Town must be one of the most interesting cities from that point of view, with its history of slavery, and mixing East with West with indigenous.

Cute frogs! wow, this moving quickly, getting a little disjointed. Best wishes for the surgery, that's a bummer in the middle of summer. Take your camera, and a good stock of rechargable batteries when you go in, we don't want to miss a day.

Fancy punching a hole in a convertible roof? Were you in ecstasy at the time? Was the owner of the car with you? Any more tasteless questions?
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
Rob -- Greece is definitely on my list of places to visit -- from all of the photos i've seen, it's breathtaking. I read a book recently about Apartheid and race classification in So. Africa. When She Was White you may have known of the documentary on the woman Sandra who is the subject of the book -- really crazy how the government can waffle back and forth over assigning a person's official race. I enjoyed the historical perspective though on race mixing in the area which was inevitable, just as it was here in the States.

Glory.... In the car -- and that's all i'm sayin. We need a girl's room in this joint!

I'm happy about the surgery -- it's a good thing. I'll have my camera and i'll probably have a gross photo or two to add to my collection of stiches or something.

Pain... ecstasy... something... Yes, and strangely didn't seem to mind the damage I'd caused..... unlike the time i threw the gear into reverse on the fwy of the guy i was dating.... he was a tad upset....

Reminds of an (apparently true) news story of a few years ago. A couple were making love in a Mini-Cooper (very small car) in London's Hyde Park late one evening when the gentleman had a back seizure, could not move, and the lady was trapped under his immobile body. Somehow they attracted attention, the fire brigade was called, cut the top of the car off like a tuna can, winched him out and sent him off to hospital in an ambulance. The lady burst into tears. Onlookers tried to console her, telling her that he would be well cared for, and would make a good recovery. "It's not that", she said, "what will my husband say when he sees what they've done to his car"!

A slice of real life from ace photojournalist BellaGaia!

Coming back to an earlier comment, I followed the link to that book, and yes, I remember that tragicgirl and her tragic story, from the darkest days of apartheid, a case that was very big in the SA newspapers at the time, since one of the most effective ways of fighting it was by exposing the lunacies and idiocies perpetrated by the regime to try and ensure racial purity - policemen climbing trees to photograph mixed-race couples in their bedrooms to bring a case under the "Immorality Act" - it seems almost surreal to remember and write about it. Thank God those days are gone!

marc, it's great to see you again. Hope you don't stay away so long next time. I spend way too much time at work and when I browse other diaries I feel like I don't get out enough, but i make the best of the time that I do have to spend out and about.

That's one of the things I enjoy here too -- I have really loved the peek into other people's lives. I don't have the stories and writing ability of Jonathan Riverwalker, but I'm glad people are entertained when they visit.

I feel like Johnny Ace Reporter sometimes on the lookout for the interesting photo of the day (which, again, is hard to do when I spend my time locked away in an office building)

Tonight I see the POLICE (not the aforementioned, but the trio) at Dodger Stadium. Unless, they forbid taking pix, (and find my little point and shoot in the folds of my enormous purse) i'll have my camera and hopefully some good shots

Rob -- thanks for leaving your thoughts. It's really ugly what people will do to other people. Things get better in one place in the world and continue to degrade in others. -- The Sudan and Dufar for example.

CG -- Always a pleasure to see you :-). I was reading some other streams and see that you had a chance meeting with another flickr mate -- Phil, I think. These x-global exchanges are a wonderful phenomenon of what this group can produce.

BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
oh please, truth be told, i was trying so hard not to be seen taking the photo that I barely got it. I took two and the first one had someone blocking the scene. I do wish I had the juevos to just whip out my camera and go for it. I literally had that smacked out of me....... I was in Hong Kong in the market on Kowloon and stumbled upon a, in my mind, award-winning photo. this ancient woman sitting amongst vegetables. I blazenly took my stance to get my photo and "CLICK" . she turned my way, lept up and sprung at me like a ninja from "crouching tiger, hidden dragon". she commenced to pummeling me with her little withered fists and yelling at me in Chinese while i just stood there taking it like the ugly american that I felt I was. Then, I committed further offense, by reaching into my bag to scramble for some coins to pay her for taking her picture. This sent her into another fit. She shoved my hand back at me and looked at me like I was phlemy spit on the ground. I just murmured clumsy apologies how I didn't mean to offend, I wasn't trying to take her soul. After she got tired of beating on me, she huffed off back to her stool. Shaken, I wandered over to another person and tried to find some english speaking person to convey my deep apologies for offending her. There was one of the vendors who did speak english and I beseeched them to translate my regrets to this poor lady. How stupid of me to just take her picture without her consent. He responded to me, "Oh, don't worry about her, she's crazy"

Here is some great advice on taking candid street photos from yours truly.

I know I am not supposed to post images in other people's topics, so let's see if I get away with this.
el señor policía en león, guanajuato
The moral to this story is, it is one thing to take a picture of a crazy woman in a market. It is quite another to take a picture of two of seven belligerent Mexican cops in a tough industrial town.
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
Buns, it says i don't have permission to view the photo. (p.s i don't mind your photo in my stream... but i suppose to be within the rules you can always link them in...)

I have had a string of photojournalistic failures. My earliest recollection was back in college, driving around with my roommate in her little Porsche 914 (which is really just a dressed up VW) and we were in downtown LA near skid row. I came upon a scene of a bunch of homeless people surrounding a rolls royce.... Perfect opportunity.... or so i thought. I yelled for her to stop the car (in the middle of the street), I jump out -- (yes, i was naive) and ready myself to take the shot with my fully manual 35MM. Not speedy, and very intrusive, my subjects' attention fully turned to me and they began throwing stuff at me, so i quickly folded myself back into the car as she sped down the street..... no shot. it was a memorable shot... i feel like Stanley "i coulda been a contender" Kowalski with all the prime material I've had and missed...
drab chicken [deleted] 11 years ago
that link goes to one of sandra's pics, which is marked friends only. the teensy weensy thumbnail is AWESOME!! how cutie cute cute! i dunno how to do that, and neither do i know how to make those little icon thingies, that's all the rage with the hardcore diarists -- yanno the ones y'all use to address each other with.

haha bella! so okay in the end she was nuts, but i'm sure it didn't make you feel any less guilty for having taken her picture. so here's a question... do you have that photo somewhere? or did you toss it aside as penance?
bunæn PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by bunæn (member) 11 years ago
Sorry about the dead-end link. Some commenters commented that they are too shy to take pictures of people in public.

Here is what I said:

bunaen says:

It's easier when you stand up and announce you are taking their photos in a loud officious voice---and panning your eyes across the scene meeting each subject dead in the eyes in turn, order them to resume their previous activity and not to look into the camera. Then urinate on yourself. Nobody will object, I guarantee it.

the teensy thumbnail thing is really easy to do. And you don't need firefox or grease monkey to do it.

Just copy your photo url from All Sizes (use the smallest Square 75x75 size). and in the url, replace width="75" height="75" with width="16" height="16" after you paste it into the comments box.
noxious bulb [deleted] 11 years ago
Hmmm... so you're saying that nobody should do street photography, and if they intend to take a picture, to announce it loudly?
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
heck no, not me..... i love street photography.... i just haven't been very confident to whip out my camera in every situation to capture what i see.
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
Just say loudly "I'm the Paparazzi"!, or "Excuse me, I'm on assignment for Hello Magazine". No need to urinate on yourself (ewwww, Buns).

I've still to master the technique of getting strange pretty girls to take all of their clothes off for my camera. (Just ask nicely, was one piece of advice).
bunæn PRO 11 years ago
I am just saying my method will eliminate all shyness about taking street photography. Consistently applying this technique for an appropriate period of time, say 19 months, will result in no shyness on your part; guaranteed.

I took quite a few shots on Saturday at the Police concert. We had 2nd row center seats. It felt like they were playing in my living room (if I had a really enormous house) and you didn't really realize there were 55,000 people behind you. The parking lot was CRAZY -- we took a limo to the show and had to hump it back to that side of Dodger stadium. All along the way people were on their cellphones describing their surroundings trying to locate drivers etc. There were hundreds of limos in the lot along with buses and some RV's -- yes, there were tailgaters at the concert before the show. I found my car with remarkable ease. Another one of my useless talents -- I have a wicked sense of direction and memory for where I've been. Took over an hour for the car to leave the lot. I posted a few of the other pix that I took, but I really like this one.

I am supossed to increase my protein for the next seven days -- 120 g per day. After surgery for three weeks 150 g per day. That's a TON of protein. look at your daily diet you maybe get about half of that normally. A single serving of chicken or beef is roughly 22-25 g of protein. I don't like the shakes. So for me, a scoop or two of the powder in yogurt is gonna have to work. That way i get about 40g per serving. I'm gonna get soy protein in too -- bring on the tofu!

i'll spare you the whole nutritional disertation on the benefits of one type of protein vs. another --

Always an admirer though-- Loved Rachel McLish back in the day and I think Lenda Murray is the quintessential muscle-diva. She's a year younger than me and has had such an impressive bodybuilding history. That she won titles in the early 90's and still had it goin on in the early 2000's is remarkable. I think she's gorgeous -- she looks like a Superhero!

Well, that looks a little scary for everyday -- how about this or this for a more non-competitive look

I'd be a little apprehensive to go to bed with her.... Performance anxiety?

Sunshine- definitely, I'm no fan of steroids... not even those used medically like prednisone. long term use of that is just as devistating.

Now now, Rob -- some things are meant to be just looked at and not touched LOL. I think she'd give most guys a run for their money. (WHY DID YOU PUT THIS WHOLE VISUAL IN MY MIND!!!) I cannot imagine her in some docile position putting up with some 3 minute man boasting about "yeah, I really put it on you this time, talk to daddy!"

Sorry, she asked....

Was I harsh... I'm sorry -- that was before coffee.... plus, if you saw what ran through my mind, you'd turn your eyeballs in to me for sterilization....

It seems like lately I've spent an extraordinary amount of time in MD's offices -- at least for me -- I'm fairly healthy and don't go there much other than routine checkups. I go to my dentist a lot -- I'm kind of fanatical about keeping my mouth clean and in good health. Today, he refilled one of my molars and resurfaced 3 of my composite fillings. I'm doing something right -- I have all 32 teeth. He usually puts a topical anesthetic on before injecting the pain killer because he wants to be sure that you feel NO pain. He worked about 2 hours and kept asking me if I was ok, did i need to close my mouth -- I replied -=- " i i, e oe " he, being a dentist, has an accute understanding of intonation correctly interpreted this as "I'm fine, keep going"

Wow, yeah, Lenda's beautiful. And nah, sunshine, that doesn't scare me... I already have a healthy amount of respect for women anyway, and I am fairly sure I can avoid pissing even a musclehead one too. hahaha

Thanks Bella, your post reminded me I have an dentist appointment tomorrow, I would have forgotten!

love the dentist jargon!!

I was more referring to whether such a masculine woman still attracted u guys. I dunno... but if I see a man who manicures a bit too much or has plucked his eyebrows one to many times it kind of makes me shudder, ya know? Maybe it's different for guys, I dunno...
