some cool pics... I need to catch up. You went to Vegas??

BellaGaia says:

No, I didn't. Here in California, and some of the other states we now have gaming on Indian (native american) land. I always look around and feel kinda sad when I see the people at casinos like these. These aren't high rollers like in the movies. They are mostly senior citizens on a fixed income, just throwing their money away. I remember being in New Orleans a couple months before Katrina and I was struck by the poverty that was apparent in there. There was no way that this was "disposable income". And ironically, there it costs more to play. I like to play craps, but usually pay at $5 min tables. When I play, I bet the odds across the back line (translate, I buy all the numbers 4,5,6,8,9,10) On a $5 table that's $32 and then sometimes, I'll press up the bet when a roller is doing well (add more money in increments of $5). In New Orleans there were barely any $10 tables, let alone 5, so what normally cost me $32 now would cost me $96, in addition to my line bet (that's the bet in front of you that you place to hope that the roller gets whatever number they're shooting for)... plus backing that up (for extra odds) and forget about the C&E, hard ways and around the worlds, horn bets and field bets you also got going on the table. It's not a cheap game, but in vegas sometimes you can find $1 or $2 tables where you can learn to play -- it's fun. But you can see why I play the penny slots. 50 cents a pull is a lot easier to stomach than watching $50 plus in a roll on craps -- but i've made money at both games... you just gotta know when to leave -- you can't be greedy.

Those last 8 words sum up the essence of gambling. And very few gamblers observe them, hence all the hard-luck stories.

BellaGaia says:

So, so true. i became turned off to gambling due to a family member who is just BEYOND addicted. I'm talking Whitney here! I've been with them in a weekend when they lost >$75,000. They win big too. As evidenced by the IRS note that said they'd had additional winnings for 2005, increasing the winnings for the year to.. are you ready... $400,000. Of course, you have to pay taxes for those winnings. The kicker is that this person NEVER comes home with they money they win, they lose all the casino's money and their own too. It pisses me off because I could use it for so much better purposes. That $75K weekend, I said to them "you lost 4 years tuition today." Not that they've ever contributed a dime for my daughter's schooling (which is fine, I don't expect that, but damn, if you can throw it away, throw it in my direction) I said, If you want i'll sing a little song, flash some lights and give a few bucks back to you now and then. How 'bout that? Okay, I'm starting to sound bitter. But when you're this close to it, it's not pretty.

I just scrolled up. As a little kid, I mean really little, I was a car savant. I could tell you the make of any car at the age of 3.

It is a 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe 2 Door Sedan fastback. My mom had a similar one, a '49 fastback with a custom chrome tube grill.

This one has been chopped and I am pretty sure it has been channeled. The headlights have been frenched.

Buns, CG, and Rob, eh? We must get together and discuss the Stanley Steamer some time.

The Stanley is a very very old automobile.

And channeling is when you cut channels in the bottom of the body, so it sits lower on the frame. It is the classy way to lower a car (as opposed to cutting, or heating the springs). Frenched headlights are when you extend the fenders around the headlamps, eliminating the chrome rings that usually take up the space between the lamps and the fender.

CG, Sunshine & Eeland -- Glad you like June 9 :-)

JRay --get that Googie!

About the helmet -- yeah, it surprised me how conditioned I am to seeing cyclists with helmets on, I remember when you didn't have to wear them and it seemed like such an inconvenience.... sort of like seat belts, but I can't imagine riding down a highway with trucks and cars and no protection on your head -- that's just nuts....

Sunshine -- I think beginning next year here in California you'll have to wear an earpiece/bluetooth -- it's all got to be hands free -- which, incidentally, I've heard statistically doesn't necessarily mean that you're any more focussed on the road.

Aw, thanks, Ebil -- us single parents get to celebrate both mother's and father's day :--).
ages ago (permalink)

Jade is staying with her dad. This is the first week and I miss her -- Today I picked her up just to run an errand with me over to the Nikon repair center in the So. Bay area (sidebar story: took 3 cameras to have some sort of repair done. They cleaned the D80 right there for free- YAY, gave me a part for free for my little coolpix 5 that i dropped and now look all ghetto with it taped to keep the batteries from falling out, and my 5700 they kept -- there's sand in the lens retracting mechanism.... i'm sure that will makeup for the free stuff) and to hang out -- later we went to see Nancy Drew and went to the Woodfire Grill with her bookclub, the Ladybugs, to bid farewell to the group. The girls have been together since they were 5 -- 7 years -- and school has gotten pretty demanding so most of them don't want to do the bookclub anymore. The bookclub was pretty awesome - the meetings would generally have a theme related to the book and sometimes that would be a different venue... like camping, New York to the American Girls store and , we did a juvenile diabetes walk one month too. Anyway, we loved every minute of it. We had them do crafts at each meeting and they had journals to write in and once they got bigger we had them do oral presentations to the moms about the book (one at a time they'd file into the room to present to us). So now maybe we're thinking about doing a movie club. Less pressure and hopefully as fun.

Jade says the one thing she doesn't miss while being away from me is me constantly taking her picture.....

Today I went to a bridal shower in Newport for a friend of mine. We met in 1983 at a store in Westwood that was opening.... Aahs!!! it's a card and gift store that was very popular in the village. When we were hired it was brand new and only had paint and carpeting -- we set up the whole thing. I made friends there that I still have. He was one. He got on my nerves initially -- hanging around telling me that we were going to be friends forever..... i told him to get away from me -- he was full of shit. We had many great adventures over the years from coast to coast (most of which i can't print publicly ;-) -- i'll give you a quick one -- one night we were staying in new york and he took me to Le Cirque. I've never had a more expensive dinner for two -- I think it was like $800. We drank single malt scotch, 100 yr old port and he had them shaving truffles on the food like it was parmesean cheese.... the guy paused as if he was going to stop and Seth waved for him to keep shaving it. One year he gave me 16 oz of beluga caviar and champagne for my birthday. -- he ate most of it LOL. He's decadent -- I can't even remember all of the events we've gone to....but there have been many, many, many) -- never did anything internationally.... yet.... and yep... I still know him all these years later hmmm, i guess he was right. By the way the shower was for his fiance, not him LOL. And i approve -- she's wonderful for him (she's the demure one :-)

Nancy Drew was fun and it was nice for a change to not worry about all the adult content that's in movies for once. At first, though, I must admit I rolled my eyes at some it. Look at you -- knowin' all the Disney shows. * high five.

Ebilflindas -- She mostly makes yuck faces or turns away from me. She does seem to have this fake smile lately -- I think she thinks its cute --- it's not. Yeah, her dad is close by. you know what they say, if there's nothing nice to say don't say anything at all..............

ok, that's better LOL

Thanks CG -- I enjoyed my visit -- its been hard keeping up lately with everyone's photos -- I want to, I just haven't been able to.... It seems also, like I only get mine downloaded here once or twice a week -- I must improve.

OH boy, Sunshine, do we have stories!

June 17

I actually took a few shots for a change. Happy Father's Day -- I spent the day alone and then spent the evening with my brother and his family.... and then went on a fieldtrip.... Here
are the rest of the shots that I didn't choose

here's my brother -- he usually doesn't have a mustache -- somebody told him it made him look like a porn star and I think that's why he hasn't gotten rid of it..... dreamer.... i think he's got the richard gere vibe going with all that silver hair....

Wow, what a handsome man, and that's a great portrait of your brother, Bella! My first thought was Richard Gere, too.. lol

I'm also a dreamer too.

I've always secretly wanted to go prematurely gray. I think it looks cool.

And it's better than going bald!
