That is a sad sign of the times, Simon. I can't believe school authorities think they have to go to those lengths to protect children.
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Bleh. Makes me sad that it's coming to all this crap.

And I agree- being aware is different than being afraid.. however the difficult part though is finding that balance.

BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
no you're not dumb LOL -- it's not like there was anything in the photo to show scale.

Makes me sad too Jallen -- been part of my blues this month.....
ebilflindas 11 years ago
And that's just it, T--the Blues ain't nothin' but a good wo/man feelin' down...

Now, you all know I have little boy, so which side I come out on this should be obvious. Part of me wonders, though, if this is necessarily a negative sign of the times. I mean, it's not like sexual predators are new. What is new is our collective mind-set and our available technology. I mean, nowadays, there is more awareness, understanding (for the victims), and vigilance (against perpetrators) because it is not a new problem--remember when Arnold "Whatchu-talkin'-'bout-Willis" Drummond and his friend, Dudley, were molested by Mr. Horton, the bicycle shop owner (also known as Arthur Carlson, WKRP's station manager, and the Maytag repairman)--and because we have greater means of monitoring and reporting.

Remember the first time you heard about parents using hidden cameras to monitor babysitters who were beating kids with wooden spoons? And how many of us, upon seeing that on the news thought, "Hey, that happened to me when I was a kid!" Conversely, how many of us got a good, old-fashioned spanking (not the kind that leaves welts or broken skin) that today would elicit outrage (not to mention the emotional punishment received from parents who were "against" corporal punishment)?

I dunno, I may be the lone voice in the wilderness, but I think that, more than it being a sad state of affairs, the seeming prevalence of wickedness has a lot to do with how wide our eyes are open to it now.

Totally--technology cuts both ways. I used to keep all my son's photos private, but I got tired of "inviting" people to join Flickr just so they could have access. Once I get my first lewd comment, I'm sure I'll have to reevaluate my position...

Oh, and thanks for giving us a shot of the man formerly known as Norrin Radd (the Silver Surfer)! I guess I'll have to watch the first Fantastic Four now (I'm that way with books/movies/tv shows), even though I'm only really interested in seeing how they do up the chrome Herald of Galactus!
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
i keep our "family photo album" separate from here on picasaweb. I originally joined flickr with only the intent of putting my artistic work on here.... no family stuff, until i did the archival stuff of my ancestry. but no scrabooky stuff -- and i never intended it to be personal, at all. now with this diary -- my poor photostream has no focus. It's just all over the place... the pix with the 1000's of views are still the ones with skin. but now i have pix of.... my phone playing texas holdem...
AliThinks 11 years ago
I'm late to the conversation, but I agree about being careful about what photos of your kids you put out there. I am pretty careful, but perhaps not careful enough. Also, my kids' dad does not want there photos on the internet. I do respect that, but sometimes there are things I want to share. But my daughter is gorgeous, and I worry about some freak finding her photo and...

I'm not so worried about that with my son, not that he's not gorgeous.

Also, there is a question of respect for my kids, too. They're getting to the age where they embarrass easily. I have to take that into consideration.

BUT...I do enjoy seeing other people's children...yours...Emil's...my friend Amber's...so maybe I'm a hypocrite! Mostly I just wish we didn't have to be so careful.

Okay...getting back to the photos...nothing wrong with a game of Texas Hold'em on a Friday night! ;-)

Today's shot was in response to the monthly topic -- what can't you get rid of.... well I have a lot of stuff, not the least of which is a pair of sandals from high school (i also photographed that -- they are in my closet... i could only find one) but the thing I definitely can't see myself getting rid of even though I don't use them -- Haven't played them in well over 15 years, is my album collection. But I love that I have them.... of course, they're alphabetized (soundtracks, classical etc) are filed separately.

For a detail of all, view in large size....

I actually do still have a turntable Simon, but I've gotten so bad that I barely turn my stereo on anymore, I have about 9000 songs on my computer and when i play CD's i put them in the computer and play them through my external speakers. I have this lofty project of turning my analog collection digital.......... it's still in the planning stages mostly......

Glad you approve Rick ;-)

Яick Harris PRO 11 years ago
And the Clash! I listened to a lot of Clash back in college and Elvis Costello. Great music. I was in college from 78-82, so there was a lot of Bruce Springsteen and a lot of new wave. I was a preppy little new waver. Gads, I'm glad I grew outta that :)

Glory -- Tapesty baby -- one of my first albums and i also had the piano music book so i could play the songs!

Rick -- Me Too, new wave, punkish, gothish clubber! (Do you see Fishbone ....do you know them... they were pretty much a local LA band back then)

Sunshine City -- Never Ever!
Яick Harris PRO 11 years ago
Funny story, I visited LA way back in '83 -- I was visiting with a friend. Her sister was dating one of the Plimsouls -- have you heard of them? I think of them whenever I think of LA music. (I vaguely recall Fishbone -- nothing definitive).
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
Yes, I remember them.... Remember Siouxie and the Banshees, Erasure ( i saw their album in the shot earlier)
Яick Harris PRO 11 years ago
Funny -- my daughter picked up some Siouxie and the Banshees -- no prompting from her dad, she discovered them on her own. She plays them endlessly (just like the Smiths). Love Erasure too!
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
The Smiths -- -How soon is Now! Woo, that brings back scary (and completely exhilaratingly fun) drug filled times!
Яick Harris PRO 11 years ago
Yanno -- I failed miserably at the whole drug thing. I went through the typical teenaged experimental phase -- but I was such a paranoid bag o' crap, I just had to give it up. Most of my buddies were stoned out of their skulls for high-school and I straight as a divinity student. I never lost their trust; I think they quietly respected me for turning it down.

How Soon is Now is a great Smiths tune. So is Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. What a great band!
BellaGaia PRO 11 years ago
my experimental phase lasted about 3 or 4 years and then i was done. I always respected anybody who declined. Misery doesn't love company that much.
AliThinks 11 years ago
LOVE your album collection. All of my LPs are stowed away somewhere at my family's cottage. Allan's are all here; he has a ton, and we are also considering digitizing them. We don't have a turntable or even a stereo! We listen to internet radio via a Roku Soundbridge.

Anyway...don't get rid of your albums. :-)

Alison
BellaGaia PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by BellaGaia (member) 11 years ago
Digitizing them is a big project -- something for winter months when you're holed up in the house.

There are a few I have weeded out over the years -- just a few..... Do you know I have John Travolta's one recorded album. He did it when he was a sweathog! love the art from them. Even those that I've gotten CDs for I can't bear to part with. I am still particularly salty about lending my Uncle Jam Wants You by Funkadelic to this guy (tell me i don't hold a grudge) in 1987 that I never got back! I don't lend out my music. I was dating this guy some years ago and he wanted to borrow a few CD's. I was like, I'll buy you your own copy, you can't take mine anywhere. Now, I just burn copies of my stuff for people or make them kick ass playlists.
