Well, it's nice to keep seeing the mums. If they're doing ok, then you must be doing alright as well. :)

Glad to hear you were able to have a long conversation with Ali today. Taxes are sooo easy to just push aside...I still need to get mine done, too (sigh).

Just a thought: Try waiting for your flowers to wilt. Sounds depressing, I know, but I attempted to take some point-and-shoot photos of my wilting flowers a couple of days ago. The tops of the stems (technical name="receptacles"?) were slightly bending under the weight of the petals and they looked so graceful. The pictures would have been quite beautiful, except I had a really tough time with the lighting (just tried using a floor lamp). Since you own a tent, I think you'll have much better luck than I did. :)

They are showing their age but still look beautiful, and two weeks is a long life for cut flowers. And I agree with ebilflindas, we're the lucky ones :)

Yes. I am. :)

That's an excellent photo you took. I am going to let these flowers wilt. I think they will still be beautiful in their own way.

Rainbowls Redux

It was another day of doing nothing. I went to bed fairly early last night. It was pouring rain and the sound of the rain hitting the windows lulled me to sleep.

When I woke early this morning, the sun was shining, But the sun must have seen me coming, because it went back into hiding behind the clouds for the remainder of the day. It is raining again, and very windy.

I had no reason to go out, so I spent the day replying to a backlog of blog comments. I managed to clear out the inbox. Then I cleaned out the cat's litter box and refilled it.

Then I took some photos. This one is a revisitation of my all-time most popular photo I have uploaded to Flickr.

I'm thinking about maybe going out for dinner tonight. Just to get out of the house. Then I'll probably watch the Academy Awards on TV.
lramiro520 11 years ago
Great photo, Allan! And your "all-time most popular photo"...OMG!!! The number of hits for that picture made my jaw drop!

Thanks...I'm sure your flowers will wilt very gracefully! They almost always do and you can often find some aspect of beauty in their slow decay.

2740 including my view...nicely done. Who wudda thought a group of nesting bowls would make it to the top...sort of a (better) superbowl !

Oh just a note about returning to bachelor status (while Ali is visiting FR)...when my wife returns to FLA to visit family and I am left to my own devices...I love to lay around - eat one pot meals - grow unreasonable whiskers - leave the seat up - watch stupid videos and generally wait patiently for the last day before she arrives home to clean up !! Waller in the moment !!!

It made my jaw drop the day I uploaded it, and it got several hundred hits within hours. It did make it to #1 on the Explore page for a few weeks, which brought in more viewers.

Those flowers are starting to turn a corner, I think. It will be interesting to watch the decay. And photograph it.
As for returning to my bachelor ways, I am still missing her so much, it is hard for me to relax and just let things go. Not much worth watching on television, but I don't feel like cooking anything elaborate, so I am eating lots of frozen food heated in the microwave.
It was an okay Sunday, but would have been better if I had been with Ali.

Rays of Hope

I know you are asking yourselves, "What is up with this guy and the flower pictures?"

Well, I titled this one Rays of Hope, and in the description of the photo, I put George Harrison's lyrics to Here Comes the Sun.

I did so because for most of the day, it has been gloriously sunny. Old Sol didn't run and hide from me when I got up this morning.

I spent most of the morning on the phone, first with Alison, then an old friend who lives in New York, but who will visiting us in April, and then with Alison again.

After that I joined my sister for lunch at a new Mediterranean café near where she lives. The café is owned and operated by three brothers from Jordon who have lived here for several years and worked as cooks in two other similar restaurants.

They are great cooks, and we have followed them to each new restaurant they have cooked for. The food at their two previous places of employment is not as good as it was when they cooked there.

It was great to see them again. They remembered us and greeted us warmly.

When I got home, I took this photo to mark the day, then chatted with Ali online a bit before she and the kids went to bed.

I hope your Monday has been as sunny and bright as mine.

Tax Preparation

I finally sorted out all my tax information, and started documenting it all. I ran into a problem which caused me to waste 3 hours searching for Two pieces of information.

I searched boxes of records in the basement, and in an upstairs office. Repeatedly. I was pulling my hair out. Then I was hit with a flash if inspiration.

A search of my laptop hard drive uncovered the needed information in a spreadsheet stored there. D'oh!

I called it a day after that.

On a brighter note, I did talk to Alison on the phone several times. That was good.

Widow

I got almost all of my tax work done today. The remainder should take about 30 minutes to complete (I hope). I will then take the organized information to the accountant on Monday.

I took a bunch of photos as well to try and unwind after all that work. I only got three decent shots out of the dozens I took. You can see one of my better efforts for the day here.

I talked to Ali a couple of times today on the phone and chatted via IM before she went to bed.

After we signed off, I realized she would be home in less than two weeks. And I got to thinking about our reunion.

I think a decent bottle of champagne is in order. Maybe two!

We have a simpler way to deal with taxes. Everything is retained directly from your salary every month, and believe me it hurts....but at least no paper work.
Give my best to Ali, hope she enjoy the quality time with the kid.

Then, in April, I find out whether I have underpaid, or overpaid. I usually owe them a bit more, rather than the other way around.

ME Exp 2

It's been a pretty lazy day today. I slept late, surfed the net all morning, talked to Ali on the phone a couple of times, and took some photos.

Yesterday, I began experimenting with the multiple exposure feature of the Nikon D200. Nothing I shot then came out like I had hoped it would, but I did a bit of research online, and gained some insight that the camera manual failed to provide.

This is one of two shots that came out well. You can see the other one on my photostream.

It has also snowed off and on all day. I hope the clouds clear out of here by the time the moon rises tonight. There is a lunar eclipse that will be visible when the moon rises. I'd like to try and take some photos of it.

The last time I was able to photograph an eclipse was in 2003. You can see a shot of it here.
AllanThinks 11 years ago

I'm soooo pissed about the eclipse. It was completely clouded in down here in Philly. I hope you had better luck!
AllanThinks 11 years ago
You can take 10 exposures and the camera will combine them.

I was afraid I would miss it. It snowed all afternoon. Just before sunset the clouds started to break up, but didn't completely go away. I had to deal with the moon disappearing and reappearing as well as very high winds and bitter cold. I almost froze my butt off.

I took over 50 photos and only got this one decent shot.

I didn't catch any of the eclipse, but then again, the moonrise for me was three hours later than yours--I hope your were able to get some shots.

Those are the same flowers I bought over three weeks ago. they are starting to wilt some now. I'm amazed they have lasted so long. But I am feeling the need to bring more color into the photostream, so I might look for something new soon.

I couldn't get any good shots when the moon was mostly covered in shadow. It had just risen and there were scattered clouds covering it. All I got was the one good shot just before the eclipse ended. Then an hour latter, the sky was once agan cloudy and it snowed.

Thanks!

It is really my pleasure.

Done!

I finally got done with the preparation and organization of my tax information. That's it on the left there.

I'll get it to the CPA tomorrow some time tomorrow.

I only had to do about 20 minutes of work on it today. The rest of the day I watched basketball on TV, played on the computer, took a few photos, and talked to Ali several times. We talked for a total of over 3 hours. I had to recharge my cell phone battery between the second and third calls.

I also made hotel reservations online for her and the kids in Paris. They will be going up on Tuesday and returning on Friday.
dda1605 11 years ago
3 hours a day.....Why not using Skype out or any other internet phone facilities. It is so cheap (I know you finished your taxes report but I care for your next one....).
I hope Ali will have a great time with the kids in Paris (Jardin des plantes, EuroDisney, La Villette, Tour Eiffel, Le manege de montmartre or just visiting friends ?).

They are just going up to prowl the city center. I think Ali is going to try to visit Aimee (Putyourflareon), who has a diary in this group.

Neon Jack

Today was another good day. The sun shone all day, and it warmed up a bit.

My sister came by late this morning, and we went to lunch at a nearby Mediterranean restaurant. When we got back, I helped her back up her company's books onto floppy for her to take to the accountant.

She had brought her laptop over, and an external floppy drive. That drive didn't work, but I had one that did work. I also helped her put new windshield wiper blades on her Jeep.

Since she and I have the same accountant, I asked her if she would drop off my records there as well. She said she would. That save me a half hour.

I headed out to do some shopping. While out, Ali sent an SMS asking me to call. When I got out of the store, I did. I sat in the car in the parking lot and talked to her while she did laundry.

When we were done talking, I headed for home where I did a couple of chores, then took this photo of some neon plastic jacks I found in the bargain bin at the store where I shopped. They only cost 88 cents, which was worth it to get a photo of them.

I'll save them for the kids to play with when they visit this summer.

I talked to Ali again late in the afternoon. She and the kids are heading to Paris tomorrow morning by train. They will be there until Friday. The kids go back to school on Monday.

Teetering On The Edge of Doom

It's been a good day so far. Woke up early and paid a stack of bills. I love online bill paying. I've save a lot of postage the past couple of years, and I hardly ever write a paper check anymore.

Spent an hour taking photos. So far, this is the best of the 50 I took. I need to look at the others and see if any of them are worthy of uploading.

I heard from Ali earlier. She and the kids made it to Paris, and she has internet access in the hotel where they are staying. They were all pretty tired from their early start today, and the train ride to Paris.

After they rested up, they planned to go out sightseeing. I think they were going to Notre Dame or to the Eiffel Tower.

The local chapter of Drinking Liberally has a meeting tonight. I'm not sure if I will go or not.

That's my day up to this point. I see Ali is online again. I'm going to go chat with her.

I hope your day has been good.

the colors you've been capturing lately are breathtaking! love today's photo by the way -- and the photo of the water on the leaf. You have such an eye for making the everyday look extraordinary!

Thanks, but it is already slowed to a creep.

I love you so very much.

Thank you. That's what I try to do with my photography. I'm not always successful, but one in a while I think I achieve that goal.

I bought this orchid in the floral department of the grocery store yesterday. I've been having a blast taking photos of it. The flowers are so beautiful.

It was a gorgeous day here today. Sunny and the temperature reached 24ºC. I went for a walk at the local arboretum today. I walked 2 miles. This is the first time I have walked like that in months. I just don't like to do it in cold weather.

This afternoon Ali and I talked on the phone for over two hours.

She and the kids got back from Paris. The place they are staying has no internet. Her laptop detects a couple of wireless networks, but they are protected and she can't connect to them.

It might be a couple of days before she can check in here again.

I've been invited to go out for a beer and to listen to live music tonight. I think I will go. Sitting around this empty house is doing me no good.

I can't wait for Thursday night, when Alison returns and it becomes a home again.

I gave Alison a pink Nano for Christmas. Green is my favorite color, so there was no other choice for me.

The Cycle of Life

It was a lazy Saturday here. I was recovering from my night out last night.

I took some photographs, edited the photos, watched some basketball games on TV (It's March Madness, after all), and talked to Ali several times. I ventured out of the house once to go to the grocery store.

This photo is of the same flowers I have posted here several times over the past few weeks. They are still going, although they are in decline. I don't know how long it will take them to completely dry up.
