Dude. I'm sick. Leave me alone.

Today revolved around taking our cat, Mr. Jones to the vet. He began sneezing on Saturday, and yesterday he slept all day, and ignored his food.

I knew he was sick. He just wasn't acting like his usual self. At the vet's office we discovered he had a high fever, an ear infection and an upper respiratory infection.

He got an injection of antibiotics and another injection of kitty Tylenol to reduce his fever, as well as pills and ear drops to bring home.

When we got home, he ran upstairs and hid for a while. He finally came back down and ate some. he also drank a lot of water. He's now in our bed, sound asleep.

I'm sorry I have been lax in visiting everyone's diaries the past couple of days. We've been busy. Tomorrow will be another full day.

Wednesday should be a bit more relaxed. I'll catch up then.

Take care.
luckywhitegirl 11 years ago
aw, hope he's feeling better soon. How did he get this kitty illness? Do you know? Or is it just one of those things?

He looks so handsome when he is feeling well. This shot really reflects his mood last night. The meds seem to be working. He is a lot better today, but it is going to take 7-10 days of the antibiotics to make sure he is well.

Yes, I can believe Super Bowl Sunday is a big eating day. We ended up ordering a pizza.

He sends his thanks. ;)

He would have ripped it to shreds! :D

He sends his love back at you. :)

He still had a fever when I took that shot. I know how bad I feel with a fever. I can only imagine how it makes a small animal feel.

He is quite photogenic. He is casting about for an agent. ;)

I Have A New Hobby

This morning, Ali and I attended a basic knitting class at a nearby yarn shop. Both of us are complete noobs, but we both picked it up pretty fast.

This photo is of my needles, the free ball of yarn we received, and the 4 or 5 rows that I knitted while there.

We have plans to go somewhere this afternoon, but it has started snowing here and we are under a winter storm warning. We could get up to 6 inches of snow by midnight.

I might end up with a lot of free time today to practice my knitting.

I was kind of tense during the class. I didn't want to look like an idiot. And I was an undercaffienated idiot at that. But I can see how relaxing it can be.

Mr. Jones has perked up some today. I think the meds have already kicked in.

I think I will be doing lots of scarves, too. Perhaps I will get good enough at it to do more ambitious things, but I don't know...

My mother knitted when I was a kid, but she never taught me how to do it. I figured it was about time I learned.

I'll probably make a few scarves first. I'd love to do socks as well. I need some multicolored socks to wear with my Birkenstock sandals. ;)

I think a trade could be arranged.

Leverage

This is a photo of one of our corkscrews. This amazing device kind of ruled our day.

Yesterday afternoon it began to snow here, and the forecasters were predicting heavy snow. Up to a half foot of it. Just hearing that gave me cabin fever. I had to get out of the house, so Ali and I walked down to a nearby shopping area, and found ourselves in the liquor store there.

We were out of bourbon, so I got a bottle. They also had a sale on a lot of their wines. We ended up bringing home 6 bottles of wine.

When we got home, I got dinner started (we had a North African lentil and rice dish...yum!), and had a couple of bourbon drinks. Ali had a couple of glasses of wine.

The when we sat down to eat our dinner, we opened another bottle of wine. Which lead to the opening of yet another bottle.

So today was a day to recover.

We met a dear friend at a local Thai restaurant for a late lunch. When we got home, Ali and Mr. Jones took a long nap. I spent the rest of the afternoon, taking photos, including this one.

You must try some bourbon some time. I can recommend some good ones.

I'm not sure that is my reflection. I took this in the light tent, and I was a few feet behind the camera. It might be the camera, or the edge of the opening of the tent.

Thanks. I do ned to pick the nedles up and practice. But we have been running around like crazy the past couple of days. Maybe this weekend will be calmer.

:) All shall be revealed in a couple of weeks.

Yep. :)

My all-time favorite (so far) is Woodford Reserve from Labrot & Graham. It is made very near where we live.

We are working our way through a list of 54 premium small batch and single barrel bourbons. I've found a few others I like quite a lot.

I just saw your first shots with it. Don't you just love the light diffusion? I hope your thumb is okay.

Thanks. See above for s rec. I also like Jim Beam Black Label, Maker's Mark, Elijah Craig 12 Year Old, and the list goes on. ;)

Thanks for stopping by. Mr. Jones is well on the road to recovery. He still has a week of pills to take, though.

Back n january, I posted a photo of one that I made from a cardboard box and tissue paper. See it here.

I have since bought a sturdier on made from nylon. I might post a photo of it later today.

We are both about to burst from keeping the secret. But in a couple of weeks all will be revealed.

Photocraft and...

BellaGaia said in her last comment that she didn't know what a light tent was. So I thought I would post a photo of my recently acquired tent. I got this to replace the one I made from a cardboard box last month. it was kind of flimsy, so I bought one that is much more sturdy.

The result of what I was doing in this photo can be seen here.

I found the flowers at the local grocery. I had stopped to pick up a few things after I dropped Alison off at the salon to get her hair done. When I saw them, I knew I wanted to shoot them.

So that's how I spent a couple of hours of my day. The rest of it was quite productive as well. I hope yours was just as cool.

Here I am doing some research for the dinner party we are hosting for a couple of friends tomorrow night.

We spent the afternoon shopping for it, visiting our local liquor emporium and gourmet food shop, the Liquor Barn. Yes, it is actually called that, and yes, it's huge.

We stocked up on wine and beer, some munchies for before dinner, and deli meats to cook on our raclette grill.

After dinner we are going to watch the Grammy Awards on television. The Police are opening the show!

Don't be. Life is what you make it. it took me years to realize that.

I ordered it from Adorama. It is made by Smith-Victor, and is a 14 inch light tent. It collapses to a small size and fits in a carrying case. It was quite affordable.

I don't know if you watched the game, but UK lost by 3 points. I thought we would get creamed by Florida. They are really dominating the conference this season.

Waiting On My Bedside Table

These are the books I am currently reading. I am not making much progress on them. The Anthony Bourdain book is what grabs my attention the most right now, but I just can't seem to finish any of them.

Years ago, before I owned a computer, I would go to the library once a week, check out 6 or 7 books, read them, and return them the next week. Week in and week out.

Now it takes me weeks to finish a single book. I usually only read for a short time in bed at night, before turning out the light to go to sleep.

The rest of my free time is spent at the computer, it seems. I'm either editing photographs and uploading them, or hnging out here reading other diaries, or surfing elsewhere.

Not that I am complaining. It is my choice.

But I really do need to carve a bit more time out of each day to read.

msspider66 11 years ago
I am fortunate. My 1 3/4 hour commute (each way usually longer on the way home) is on public transportation. I have plenty of reading time. We started an office library so most of my reading lately has been the mysteries my coworkers seem to prefer. I just statred "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk. It was part of the books I treated myself to before my last trip.

Normally I enjoy reading books that take place in the location I am traveling to. On my may to Berlin I read " A Woman in Berlin: Eight Weeks in the Conquered City: A Diary" by Anonymous . It was very moving to read about something and to walk the streets of the city where it took place.

I may be going to DC next weekend. Guess I should pick up something political.

BTW Allan, how did the Police do? I must have missed them while I was doing laundry.

oh I've heard so many good things about Snow. Someone recommended it to me and made me promise to read it and I forgot. I just started reading Middlesex which also came highly recommended.
AllanThinks 11 years ago
I think it is a fairly common problem these days. There are so many things to distract one from reading.

Books in MP3 form? That rocks. But I've never gotten into listening to other people read books to me. Except for David Sedaris. His I will listen to.

They sounded pretty good. They did Roxanne. I wish they had done something else like Walking On The Moon. And they announced their tour schedule, too.

And I used to read mysteries almost exclusively. Perhaps I would read more if I revisited that genre.

You're welcome.

LOL!

You will be glad you did.

Mmmmmm. Chocolate. I Love Chocolate.

I was originally going to take a photo of my hair today, as I got a haircut this morning. The first haircut I have had since mid-December. That's the longest I have gone between haircuts in a long time.

If you have read Alison's diary today, you know that chocolate played a big role in making today special.

After our friend A dropped off the box of four Ruth Hunt Woodford Reserve Bourbon Balls to keep us from having to go out in the rain, we went out anyway. We needed some milk, and I wanted to get some extra things to add to the beef vegetable soup I was going to make for dinner.

While at the grocery, we picked up a couple of bags of chocolate hearts. One was Dove dark chocolate, the other were Butterfinger Milk Chocolate covered hearts.

That's what you see in the photo.

The chocolate made an otherwise dreary, rainy day very special indeed.

It was great. And it was a hit with our guests. Neither of them had had a raclette before. They ate heartily.

I'm liking the trim. And kisses have been exchanged.

I need a hair cut bably. It has been since the Friday before Labor Day for me. I use to have very long curly hair. Today one of my coworkers said my hair was straight. I was crushed. She tried to cover herself by saying hairgets straighter as you grow older. I am only 40. That isn't "older"!

Allan, you rapscallion! How can you post such a tooth-achy photo?!
(btw, I have a set of photos from Family Science Night at my son's school. One class had an exhibit on teeth, specifically the effects of Coca-Cola on 'em)

Some friend! My barber keps telling me that when I let my hair get too long on top, that its weight causes it to look thinner on top. He might just be trying to get me in his shop more often.

Just trying to drum up business. ;)

I'm a chocoholic. And I am not yet in recovery.

Thanks. Despite not being a believer in the unholiday of St. V Day, I do like to photograph hearts and heart-shaped objects this time of year. I bought the chocolates just to photograph them.

Yeah, that's the ticket. It's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;)

You lookin' at me? You lookin' at me? You lookin' at me? Then who the hell else are you looking... you looking to me? Well I'm the only one here.

This morning I looked out the back door and saw this hawk sitting on our neighbor's fence, about 8 feet away from her bird feeder. Needless to say, there were no birds anywhere to be seen or heard.

I don't know if the hawk had made a kill and finished eating its prey, or if it was just hopeful that some hapless sparrow or squirrel would pass by.

We have lots of hawks around here. I see them all the time, but rarely do I get such a good chance to photograph one.

This one hung out there for about 20 minutes before moving on.

I love raptors. So majestic...so deadly. Nice shot!

nice shot -- especially with the texture of the fence and the rust color

I do, too. We get sharp-shinned hawkd, Cooper's hawks, red-tails, peregrine falcons, kestrels, and the occasional osprey around here. I never tire of seeing them.

Luckily the snow had stopped and the sun had come out when I took this. I loved the look of the garden border fencing in the background.

wow that is so cool! What is that weirdness in the background though? some crazy kind of fencing?

The neighbor has it all over her yard to try and keep her two collies out of her flower beds. And it really looks weird when seen out of focus like that.
