Yes. I thought of that as well. We already have a number of glass vessels about the place filled with sea glass.

I might just hang them in their mesh bags in our southerly facing windows as suncatchers.

I think my head is swelling!

It's been a lazy day here in Lexington, USA. I woke fairly early, despite not setting the alarm clock. I was wide awake, too, so I just got up. I think it had something to do with the bright sunshine filtering through the curtains.

Ali slept in most of the morning. While she slept, I answered emails, visited my favorite diaries, and read my RSS feeds. I showered and dressed, then took some photos.

After she got up, I went to the grocery to pick up lunch meats, bread, cheese, and chips for our lunch.

Since then, we have sat around surfing and taking more pictures.

The sun has now disappeared behind a thick layer of clouds and the wind has picked up. The forecast calls for a mix of rain, sleet, and snow tonight, and very cold temperatures and snow showers tomorrow.

I hope we get some accumulation of snow, although I doubt we will.. I would love to go out in the country and take some photos of the landscape with the new wide angle lens.

My self-portrait above was taken with the new lens and the new Nikon Speedlight. You can see me with a less swollen looking head here.

In the wine glass? That is gold glitter. I like to imagine it was real gold foil, but alas...

It snowed today!

It snowed here today. Not very much, but it's the most we have seen all winter.

The showers started early this morning, shortly after I got up. It was 18ºF/-7.8ºC at that time. Once that first squall moved on, the sun came out and the temperature rose just a bit. Much of the accumulated snow disappeared through sublimation.

I was thinking that it would be a good day to stay inside and be lazy. But Ali and I had to attend the University of Kentucky basketball game this afternoon. By game time, the sky was cloudy again, and the temperature had dropped back into the teens. By the time the game ended, snow was again falling.

I took this photo after we got home around 4:30. By then the temperature was down to 15ºF/-9.4C. And now that the sun has set, it is even colder. The snow has ended for now.

Alison is cooking a cassoulet for our dinner, and we will probably watch some television this evening.

I might build a fire, too.

The Speedlight and light tent have opened up a whole world of possibilities for my photography. I can't believe I waited so long to get the flash.

I'm not sure we have the room for one. If I got one, I would want a big one. Several hundred liters, at least. I might have to throw away the television or something to make room.
~magpie~ PRO 12 years ago
OK, I focused on your new flash and didn't remember that you had gotten a new lens as well. I don't see where you say which wide-angle you got... what is it?

We had a 30 gallon aquarium... I miss it, but our house is too small and when we got Otis, our parrot, something had to go. If you set it up right, get live plants, and change the water once in a while, it's really a low-maintenance ordeal. I think live plants help a lot. Someday when we have a larger home I'll set it up again...

Thanks!

The lens is a Tokina AT-X 124 (12-24 f/4).

I had a 10 gallon aquarium for many years when I was a kid. I always swore I would have a larger, and nicer one some day, but I've never done it.

I never actually lit that fire. It was so bitterly cold outside, I decided to close the flue damper on the fireplace to keep the cold out and the heat it.

It won't be quite so cold tonight, so I might light one this evening.

Still Life
Still Life

Still life. That was the theme for today. Still life. As in paralyzed. Paralyzed with rage.

Alison called her kids today. But first spoke with her ex, who said things that upset her. A lot of things. Things that were mean, hurtful, and untrue.

I came into the room and heard her crying as she talked on the phone. I wanted to grab the phone from her and shout at him. Shout at him to stop. To leave her alone.

But I knew that would not make the situation any better. I clenched my teeth and paced the house. I went outside and smoked a cigarette. Then another.

Eventually she spoke with her kids. I could see her struggling to maintain her composure. Struggling to keep from crying again. I could tell that talking to them calmed her. I could hear the love in her voice, and in theirs.

But when she was done with the call, the pain came back. Eventually she busied herself with the task of booking her flight to France for next month where she will spend the kids' winter holiday with them, and take care of some personal matters.

I was still angry with what had happened. It wore me out. I eventually crashed on the sofa and slept fitfully.

Late in the afternoon, we went for a walk to the grocery to buy some root vegetables to roast for dinner. The exercise, and the fresh air cleared our heads.

I feel better. I hope she does, too.

I just want to say how much I appreciate the little glimpses we get into everyone's lives here. Some glimpses are bigger than others; some more personal.

Thank you, Allan, for sharing the good and the not-so-good. It's a joy to see the love and support you two have for each other.

Thank you both. Our relationship is the best thing that has ever happened to me. And I think, to her. It has been so liberating.

I was raised in a family that did not share their feelings. Everything was internalized. That is the reason I was hospitalized at the age of 19 with a gastric ulcer. Then I spent way too many years in a relationship with a woman who was as repressed herself, and who oppressed me even more.

With Ali, i feel so free to express my feelings. It is the greatest feeling.

After dinner tonight, we sat at the table and talked for over an hour. It was a very deep conversation. It was wonderful.

P.S.: Hey Denise and David! Thanks for reading. It means a lot.

2) My wife and I have 4 boys - all adults now - from different marriages. The struggles from ex-spouses are the most painful. These are people we once said we loved! I can assure you the children are not blind and see more than we think. As adults each and every one of our kids have told us we did the right thing. It is truly wonderful when you have someone beside you to share every joy and every pain with... every anguish and every doubt. Confronting and comforting one another, through the good days and the bad.
I am lucky too to have such a special person in my life, but hearing about other people's relationships makes me happy, because all too often people aren't that lucky!

I hope the days get better and that Ali's trip will only bring her joy and reunite her with her kids!

January 31, 2007

It's bad enough that I am stressed out enough to have a pinched nerve in my neck which is causing excruciating pain in the back of my head, my neck, my upper back, and my right shoulder.

But last night, someone who I thought to be a friend, said to me, "Please don't take this the wrong way Allan because I love your photos, but lately they haven't really been inspired."

How else am I to take it?

I feel insulted. I feel hurt. I slept very poorly last night, partly due to my physical pain, but also from the emotional pain this 'friend' has inflicted upon me.

Today's photo represents the work of an uninspired photographer.

jan 30: oh wow!
jan 31: oh no!

dear allan! don't take your friend's comment as absolute truth. first of all, no one person's opinion determines the reality of things, and second of all, you are incredibly insipiring! i look forward to new images and new words from you every day. your photos are always considered, never a careless click of the shutter for a 'oh that'll do for today' photo. and the way you and ali live and share that with us has become a part of my daily life too!

i'm sorry to hear about the pinched nerve - i have something similar at the moment myself. makes me want to rip the muscles out, pound them with a meat tenderiser, and put them back. wouldn't it be easier if our bodies were detachable that way? :D

aw, yeah ... well... huh. tough one. It wasn't said in anger was it? So I guess they meant it as constructive criticism. Which you should take with a grain of salt. Especially if they couldn't be more specific. And --I know this is hard-- but try to see if you can appreciate their honesty. They obviously felt comfortable enough with you to say something so blunt and ya know.. there's something to be said for a friend who doesn't feel like they have to be... um, what's the word? false? complementary? flattering you all the time? But if that's the nature of your friendship you should also feel comfortable to ask him/her why they said that and to say how it hurt your feelings.

but what do I know? At the very least I think you should not take it to heart and go on being Allan: a great photographer!

First off... I love the 30th shot - the use of white background is perfect. Of course the emotion behind it is sweet and you get hugs for that.

Re: your friend. This is tough... because s/he was likely trying to be helpful. How things are put make a huge difference in how they're taken though, and some more tact wouldn't have been as offensive. I look at your most recent photos and - hello, you're just playing with new gear. I personally think playing with new toys is inspiring, although -as someone else mentioned- what is inspiring to you won't be for everyone. One last thought - these journals are for us, and every photo in them won't be inspiring. Mine certainly aren't. I suggest talking with your friend, saying how your feelings were hurt, and maybe get some more insight into their thoughts. And keep those photos coming! Do them for YOU.

Get that nerve better!

Erica Day by Day 2007

Thanks, everyone.

The whole incident bugged me so, because this person had always been very complimentary toward my photography. And was quite capable of offering constructive criticism.

This comment just rubbed me the wrong way.

Sure, I know that not every photo I take for this project is going to wow everyone. Many times simple snaps of everyday life are all that is needed to convey what my day was like. That's the nature of the project.

Perhaps she was just seeing the photos I post for the diary, and that's where her comment came from. I don't know. She's not a Flickr participant, so I doubt she understands what some of the shots I post represent.

The pain in my neck is better today, thanks to a wild night last night involving lots of bourbon, a bunch of free Jack Daniels, and a lot of beer after that. Oh, yeah, there was karaoke involved, too.

More about all that in today's entry. Coming soon to a computer screen near you.

Lounging

Like Alison, I spent most of the day lying around, trying to recover from our wild night on the town last night.

She woke me up at 7 this morning to tell me to come to bed. I had passed out on the sofa sometime around 3 a.m. Sleeping on the sofa with no support under my head and neck somewhat negated the therapeutic effects of all the alcohol I ingested last night. By the time we got home, I was in no pain, and my neck and back were as relaxed as they have been in a while.

But I have had twinges of pain there all day. Nothing like the past two days, but annoying still.

Hopefully, a good night's sleep tonight will make it all better.

The photo is of our bedroom, where I reclined in the bed this afternoon as I answered a ton of comments on my blog.
sunshinecity 12 years ago

Actually, your opinion, and those of others in this group, and my Flickr contacts mean the most to me.
BellaGaia PRO 12 years ago
Isn't it funny how we place so much value on others opinions. That is all that it is... an opinion. I could give you a host of analogies and examples that would prove that the speaker's words have absolutely no correlation to the validity of your photos..... i'll just say andy warhol... soup can... nuf said.

it's funny, because I've viewed you as such a confident artist in this stream -- it surprises me that her comment effected you. I think it's a good point that she's not a flickr participant.... AND not a member of this group... tell your friend to hit a home run photo each and every day of the year for the next 365 days.

Plus, I think it is the sum total of the work that we will produce that will be profound.... the collection you complete will have a tone, a voice that is yours. I don't give a rat's butt (I'd say something else, but it's not my discussion stream....) what an outsider has to say about what i create for this project...

Here's something to do... go shoot something fabulous this weekend --

p.s. i love collard green's take on it, i mean i love....'s take on it!
AllanThinks 12 years ago
Thanks for your kind words.

I'm usually my own worst critic, and I post a tiny fraction of the photos I take to Flickr. When I do post something, I usually am fairly proud of it. But I guess I still have an inkling of doubt. Perhaps her comment touch that vein of doubt.

I'll get over it.

Now, This Is Winter

I awoke early this morning to find a blanket of snow on the ground, and it was still falling.

We only got a few inches of the stuff, but that is the most we have had all winter.

Ali is still having trouble with sleeping. She was awake until about 0530 this morning, so I let her sleep in. She got up after noon. We stayed in all day. We have not left the house, except to step outside and take some quick photos for our diaries.

We made homemade chicken stock this afternoon. The house smells fantastic. It is making me hungry.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

You have some really good images here. It looks pretty cold where you are, wrap up warm, I'll drop in from time to time and say hello,
regards, peter

Thanks, Peter. I'll stop by your place a bit later. I must go to the store now.
sunshinecity 12 years ago
see... now... why do you have to go and take shots like that and make me feel bad for even thinking I'm half good at photography? LOL
It's amazing how well you captured the snow and the artwork it created as it posed itself on that little flower!
I'm not just saying that to make you feel better! I'm saying that because I love your work!

snow really piling up. lovely DoF there too. i liked it so much i had to go see it larger. the smallness doesn't capture the real beauty of it.
AllanThinks 12 years ago
Thank you. Snow is a hard thing to photograph. I took about a dozen shots of this before I got one I liked.

Thank you.

Another cool bonus to this diary group is having this stereoscopic view of life between you, Allan, and Ali. And like with stereoscopic images, having two separate viewpoints of a shared life makes it almost three-dimensional for those of us who know you only through this forum.

Oh, and lovely snow-shot, too, btw! I love the detail of the snowflakes against the holly.

I dont believe it, looking at your great picture, outside through my window and again at your picture.
We both call it winter.
What a funny world we live in.
Have a great week.

Thanks. It's good to know I'm OK. ;)

Winter has had many meanings over here this year. This is the more traditional one.

Let me just tell you that you have another fan of your photographs here, and I strongly agree with 'stee, we don't get the "that'll do" shot with you.

I love the cozy feel your bedroom has and I really like the colours in your snow shot.

Have a nice weekend you too!

Thank you. As I said earlier, I am my own worst critic, and somewhat of a perfectionist. it's a wonder that I can bring myself to post any photos.

Our bedroom is very cozy. The armoire and dresser are made from salvaged barn wood. Hand made. Not by me. The texture of the wood is amazing.

Mmmm, homemade stock is fabulous! We'll sometimes boil down some shrimp shells to make an awesome stock to keep in the freezer. It tastes soo good after it sits for a day or two.

I like the details of your winter pic. The snow looks so heavy atop the delicate looking leaves.

Charmed, I'm Sure

This is the only photo I took today.

I spent the late morning shoveling snow from the driveway and sidewalk. Despite it being very cold and windy, the sky was clear and the sun melted the ice that was under the snow I removed.

The pavement is dry now, which is good, since I did not want to see the melted ice refreeze after sunset. It's just going to get colder over the next few days.

Ali went out to lunch with a girlfriend today. I stayed home and ate some leftover tuna salad, and did some chores. When I was done with them, I set up the camera and macro lens on the tripod and took this shot.

Those are wineglass charms that Ali brought from France. They have been sitting in a small glass vessel along with some sea glass on the mantle. I don't know why we don't use them.

I noticed them as I was walking by the fireplace this afternoon, and knew I wanted to photograph them. I'm glad I did. I'm fairly pleased with the outcome.

what great colours.

the snow in the photo from feb 2 looks beautiful - so clean and crisp - it looks edible! :)

When I was a kid, we used to make snow cream. We'd get a mixing bowl full of clean snow from the yard, add sugar to it, and sometimes food coloring, stir it up until it was smooth, and eat it like ice cream.

Love these last 2 shots.

When I was a kid growing up in Maine, we'd make this thing called taffy on the snow. Tsier (? how it sounded, don't know how to spell it..?) sur la neige. It's a bunch of brown sugar, maybe some corn syrup and butter? You get a bunch of fresh white clean snow like in your photo, pack it into a pot. Melt down the sugar, etc, and then pour onto the snow. It would start to cool and harden, and then we'd take a butter knife and wrap it up onto the knife. Then eat like a lollipop - it kind of tasted like a sugar daddy. But with cold snow crystals on it.

OK - I get it now...these are the little things people put on their glasses of wine to identify who is who! Nice...however I must warn you - I identify my glass of wine as the nearest one with the most wine in it !! Careful at a party. Nice shot

AllanThinks 12 years ago
Oh. My. That sounds so good. I wish we would get a foot of fresh snow so we could try that.

:) Then my job is done. ;)

Thanks. Like I said, we have never actually used them for their intended purpose. :D

It's Super Bowl Sunday!

It's Super Bowl Sunday. It seems that life in the US revolves around the game this day.

I'm not a huge pro football fan, but I do like to watch the Super Bowl. And I love to watch all the commercials.

It was another day spent indoors today. Very cold here, despite it being clear and sunny. I did have to shovel the walks again this morning. It snowed over night.

But other than that, it has been a very lazy day here. Took a few photos this morning. That was it.

I'll try to catch up with everyone's diaries before bed tonight.

Hahahha Superbowl alright! My fiance is over at friends as we speak, he's a big Colts fan... you can imagine the commotion in Indy right now!

I love your shot of those wine glass charms... you'll have to show us how they are to be used... they adorn the actual glass??

Yes, the ring goes around the stem of the glass. And I'm pulling for the Colts, too.

I am in different to football, but I gave in to watch the commercials.

The Colts just won.

For the second year in a row, the game was shown live here on public tv (was shown live here before too but I think before that it was on subscription/cable channels). However, being that it starts at midnight and therefore finishes up sometime between 3 and 4am on a Monday morning, I don't attempt to watch it anymore.

You missed an exciting game. The past few years it has been a blowout from the opening kick, but not this time.

While still not hugely popular here in the UK I know a few guys that played at uni and next season the NFL is coming to London for the first NFL game to be played outside of North America.

Beckham going to the US and NFL coming to London!!! I do declare the world is going mad!

AllanThinks 12 years ago
I do declare! That phrase is SO southern US> Are you sure you weren't born in Alabama? :)
ebilflindas 12 years ago
Actually, , it will be the first regular-season game played outside North America (wait, is Hawaii [location of the annual Pro-Bowl game] considered North America?). The Atlanta Falcons bested the Indy Colts (21-17) in Tokyo in 2005, but that was a pre-season game. The NFL is trying so hard to expand globally--maybe in preparation for Condi Rice's NFL commissioner-ship!
o.O

Love the shot of the wine-dangles, Allan!
