day 13 ~ January 13th

Being a Saturday, I had a bit of a sleep-in.... which is always nice!
I pretty much lounged all day, seeing as I didn't have any major plans.
I was supposed to meet up with my friend, to go buy a present for another' friend's birthday party tonight, but I wasn't feeling too well this afternoon, so I sent her alone. My back has been a bit sore since the other day, and I was just plain tired all day...

Tonight was fun though.... I went to pick up my friend Claudia and headed to the party at some bar. We had trouble finding the road, even though I had printed out the map from the internet... Claudia isn't very good at directing, as I've noticed!!!
We finally managed to get there, but had to wait to get in, as at 10,30pm the bar was still closed!!!!
What is it with Italians and "La Dolce Vita"?? huh?? Once we get in, all our friends start to arrive...

We had a good time as always. Claudia and I get on really well... She used to go to middle school with me, so we've known each other since we were 12, can you believe that!!??!

I came home only to realize I hadn't taken a picture for the group!! Ahi ahi!!! "Quick quick...."
I ran into my parents' bedroom to grab my dad's camera.

I looked around my room to find something that would sum up my evening, as that was the highlight of my day...

Sure enough, there it was!

It's not a great shot, but these shoes served me well! They were one of my first stylish purchases.... they are actually about 10 years old!!
I wore them the entire winter season when I got them.... then fashion changed and haven't worn them since!

Seeing as how fashion trends repeat themselves every 10 years or so... I am now able to wear them again and still look stylish!!
The awesome thing about them is that, even though they have a pretty tall heel, they are dead comfortable!
MarySesami 11 years ago
nice shoes!
I like the quick link chart you made. What a great idea!
'stee 11 years ago
those look really good for 10 year old shoes! mine would be scuffed within an inch of their lives after just 2!
msspider66 11 years ago
I am the worst when it comes to shoes. I have no taste or desire for shoes. All my shoes are black. If I find a pair I like I buy a few more because I will wear them to death. Fortunately I can wear sneakers to work. My office is very casual. A coworker wears slippers all day if her shoes get wet in the rain.

One of the things holding me back from looking for a new job is that any other place I work in will make me wear real shoes.

They do look quite stylish, and as the old song goes,

Yeah Claudia is cute!

well thansk for all the compliments, but I must 'fess up!! The collage at the top was created with fd's flickr toys, a must for any flickr fan... you just have to try them out!
As for the buddy con reply thing, that comes from using Firefox and a script program thingy called Greasemonkey... you can download it here, but as I said, you need to be using Firefox browser. (If you aren't, why the heck not_!!??!). Allan gets credit for introducing me to it...
As for the chart.... if you're referring to the qiuck links menu at the top, the initial idea was stolen from Samrag, but this particular layout was taken from Kekett.

See, I'm not half as cool as you initially thought... I just learn fast!

January 14th 2007

I got woken up at 10.45 am by my aunt who seemed to be appalled by the fact that I was still in bed at almost 11 in the morning!
I guess she doesn't realize I have a social life and that Saturday nights are for going out and coming home late! (Well mine anyways...)

I was debating weather to go to the flea market, but I did get up too late for it, and it was a grey day... and I don't like going out when it's grey..

I managed to get my hands on my Dad's camera while it was still daylight. I went out on my balcony to see what my neighbourhood was up to on a Sunday afternoon.
Sundays here in Italy are all about soccer. between 3 and 5 pm 99% of Italian males are either glued to their TV sets, to the radio or at the stadium. When the local team scores, you can hear the entire area rise in uproar with a huge cheer! It's like actually being at the stadium.
This Sunday no such thing happened. This usually means one fo two things... either the local team is losing, or the game is very boring.
I was told that Roma won... so it must have been a very boring game with a very easy opponent.

While out on the balcony I was able to observe how in the year 2007 we are still very much attached to traditions. Though nowadays we are flooded with technology that allows us to almost anything with much less effort while saving so much more time, some people still dry their clothes the old fashioned way.
It's funny but comforting at the same time... it's like we're not forgetting our roots, where we came from and what our grandmothers taught us.
I'm not sure if this still goes on in other capitals of the world, but here in Rome, we hang our clothes out to dry publicly, rain or shine!

the washing

- : the outtakes : - I will admit I had a hard time choosing which one to post!
karinga 11 years ago
You made me smile and remember my mum getting (not without my help!) that portable hanger for clothes only in spring of the previous year:) She used to stretch ropes in my bros room to dry things!!!! That was funny, especially when his mates would come to visit and find all our underwear hanging above them:) My mum used to call them artillery!;)

Really nice picture, good choice. I also liked the one with green sheets:) Do you live in the city centre? The houses look old.

(Inga in Finland All Year Round)
sunshinecity 11 years ago
Yeah the one with the green sheets was my 2nd choice...
Actually these buildings date back from the 2nd world war... or a few years before. They were poor people's housing which were built by Mussolini. The are very run down and have not been refurbished.
The area I live in is called Monteverde, and it's about 15 mins form the centre of Rome, so very close.
The curious thing about my area is that it's a hill so from here we have great views of the center of town... you can see all the monuments and churches from a certain viewpoint which is 5 mins away from my house, also known as the Gianicolo.

Woah.. reminding me also of my mum hanging clothes in the balcony.. this is one of the parts I hated the most when being a child :P.. great image representing a truly way of life (and I hope we don't loose those traditions which make life far more.. authentic?)

I think I remember that spot with the view. Is there a big park around it? I was in Rome 6 years ago.. Gosh, how long it has been! I have a dream to have a car trip in Italy. There are so many little adorable villages! Would love to see them. The countryside is unforgettable. So, Im gently preparing my boyfriend for this idea;)

Isn't that the best way to dry your cloth? Out in the wind? I've never trusted drying machines myself. If only I had a balcony, my boxer shorts would be all over the place when spring comes... There's nothing like fresh clothes, dried in the wind of April... Ahhh....

By the way, though I don't comment a lot, I do read your posts. And, like everyone else, I have to say your new icon is very... mmm... yummy.

wow, I've missed your posts for some days but today's post is great. You know I have this thing with clothes hanging out to dry and yours (all of them) are great, going to fave one of them that really made my day. Here in Portugal, everybody puts their clothes out to dry as well. I go to the roof and put them there, all for me, nobody else goes there.
I'm searching for some time now a building with clothes hanging in every floor, hopefully will have my camera with me when that happens.

your boyfriend will love it, I'm sure!

Yeah her we too put clothes out to dry on the roofs... Infact the view form my bathroom looks on a rooftop and there's always washing hanging to dry!

SamRag came by to you!

Well...you know... didn't have much to say about the shoe thing... hhhmmm

But this one. Fantastic and nice stuff going with it. I think we forget our roots to easily, I can so easily see it with some of the young people that work with me. They have not done so many things that were common when I was young (like for example spending one summer at least on a farm).

Like your photo a lot - and I'm not even telling you what seeing these lips everywhere is doing to me.

...and you clever thing... outtakes... so much better the leftovers. You take my ideas, and just re-invent into something sooo much better.
Should open up a business with you. We would both be happy and make money ;)

Love the comments on tradition.........it is true, we hould never ever forget our roots, or the price would be getting lost in time and place......and that is a strange, uncomfortable and negative feeling for everybody I believe....:-)
sunshinecity 11 years ago
Yes... also, with all these diaries I am noticing more and more how the american chains are starting to pop up everywhere!
We too have some here in Italy.. McD's, Warner Village cinemas, Footlocker... as much as I like them, sometimes I'm glad we still hang our washing to dry out our windows! It symbolizes who we are...
AllanThinks 11 years ago
We don't use shutters here in the States. At least not functional shutters.

You will see them used decoratively, but they aren't designed to actually close.

That's a shame.

But that is a really cool photo.
Allan's 2007 Daily Photo Diary
sunshinecity 11 years ago
Indeed... besides just shutters we have roll-down blinds... these will make your room pitch black! My fiancé always finds fascinating how dark these can make your room...
When ever he comes to stay, he has a hard time waking up in the morning as there's no light coming through in the window to indicate it's actually day time and the sun is up...
bright trend [deleted] 11 years ago
wonderful... how exotic your life seems to me!
AllanThinks 11 years ago
I just realized why we don't use shutters here. Everyone has screns on their windows. That makes it difficult to open and shut the shutters.

But the roll-down type would work better in that case.
sunshinecity 11 years ago
well we have screens also... I live near a very large park... we get mosquitoes all year round., even in winter... crazy but true! So screens are vital...
Here the roll-down blind actually falls behind the screen... so in order we have: the window, the screen (also a roll up, or in some cases a door) and then the blind...
We're just sophisticated

just different....

January 15th 2007 ~ day 17

Arggggghh!!!! I am hating hating hating my dad's camera!

I really want to apologise for my crappy photos, but I feel like I'm wearing someone' else's shoes or something.... I soooo miss my camera, it hurts!
I am totally not comfortable with using my dad's. It's alien! It won't seem to cooperate...a and picture I try and take, just doesn't come out right! Maybe it's me, maybe it's the camera... but my pictures today just SUCK!!

I'm utterly frustrated also by the fact that I can't take the camera with me when I go out, so I am very limited in what I can shoot.... in fact it's starting to frustrate me... I have no inspiration...

Ok, well I got my disclaimer out of the way... now I can proceed to run my day past you guys...

Remember my lovely recently purchased monitor? Well... it turns out it was going pink on me... yeah, if it stayed on for too long, it would get this pink line down the middle of it... the pixels were having issues, so today I went to take it back and replaced it with a new one....
Other than the pink line the monitor was great, so I went ahead and got a new of the same brand. My dad says I shouldn't have, and that I should have gotten another make, but... well, I'm trusting... so hopefully I won't have to regret this!

This afternoon I was going to go check out some more camera prices, but I forgot!!! This afternoon was really lazy!!!

My evening was rather uneventful too.... besides a non-cooperating camera...

I post a pic out of desperation, please forgive me!!

This only looks half decent because of Photoshop!!

...it's actually a Buddha we got in Thailand. It's only decorative of course...

As in, it's not actually a holy Buddhist relic, or we got it for decoration?
Regardless, I think the shot is beautiful. This struggle with your dad's shooter is the challenge that will show off your chops. It's not the camera, it's the eye behind it--it's what you do with what you've got, and so far, what you've done is lovely! I'll bet that by the time you get your hands on a suitable piece, you'll have figured out how to work with your dad's!

Flea markets - something I miss too :)

Sorry to hear that you don't like your Dad's cam, hope, you get yours back soon! I hope you can fix the monitor problem!

And a beautiful piece of that statue!

thanks... I hope I get my camera back soon too!

thanks for that. I too like to think it's me and not the camera that should take merit for a good shot, but if you're not able to achieve what effect you're going for, it doesn't help...

As for the Buddha, I'm not sure if this is actually a religious Buddha or not, but we use it only for decoration...

Sorry to hear of your frustrations :) That picture doesn't look half bad! It's interesting trying to quess a piece of what it is... hmmm...

Catching up on the thread...oh a thai buddha!...I think you should have had a competition and announced tomorrow...I'd have been wracking my brain all day lol

I love that clothesline picture. Very peaceful kind of and homey

You're right.... what a great idea... maybe we can make that an official thread... start posting pics where others have to guess what the object photographed is...

I like this one and the one of the star. Did you get through camera's prices now?
Hope you'll find one soon, but the poictures are not that bad.

See you soon.

I really like your last shot, a lot of contrast and a close-up which is not obvious, i'm just a little furstrated by the background.

A funny thing is that you're eager to go out to take pictures while, for me, there's nothing intersting out of my appartment...

A camera is just a tool. What always shows through in your photographs is your vision. And that is what truly matters.

Don't worry about whether the camera you are using is 'crappy'. Your eye will shine though no matter what.
sunshinecity 11 years ago
aww thanks, you've all made me feel better

yeah the background sucks a bit, I forgot to close the curtain...

Yeah hopefully I will be able to get my camera soon enough!

Don't worry about last shots (they are good, anyway). I actually can take a camera with me, but inspiration is lacking (better: non existent) at the office.
I always hope for the right shot to come and find me. Luckily, this happens. But sometimes I wonder how to keep up for other 350 days remaining... :-)

Ok ok, no whining. I like the last shot, anyway. Whatever it is.

I am so glad you share your frustrations, not that you have them, but that you share them, it is open and sweet <3

(don't cringe! I will refind the link back to page!)

omg omg, you HAVE to find it...
I might just have to send you it again!!
sunshinecity 11 years ago
lol marc, it's not that my dad won't let me take it out.. I haven't asked and I kind of don't want to. It's fairly big camera... and you can't keep it hidden in your pocket.... (though it looks cool in the pic, I actually hate it!! I much prefer my good ol' canon Ixus 30... boo hoo, why did that idiot have to drop it!!!!)

I had a terribly crappy camera when I was in rome 5 years ago. I guess because I knew that I cant have it documented well in photos, I took it deeply into my memory instead. So, it's still my favourite city abroad:)
But I sure wouldnt mind to get there now with a better camera and have a blast! :)

Yeah I know how you feel!
When i went to Venezuela and Mexico, I only had my 35 mm... as magical as that camera was... all my lovely photos are on film. Most are on my wall, so I see them every day, but I can't show them off to others.

I keep promising myself that one day I'll scan them all but I know I'm never gonna do it... maybe I need Samrag's help???
alina_gerika 11 years ago
like you shoos very much))

and what happened with your camera? I can understand how afwul it is to live without your own dear photocamera.

day 16 ~ January 16th

I struggled taking adequate photos today... I tried to make use of the last few hours of light, and just as I took a couple of shots, the battery in my Dad's camera died. Ain't that typical??
Once I recharged them, the sun had obviously started to set.
I really am not happy with any of my shots today and am only posting one because it was seems to have come out better than the rest!
It's a funny shot really...

On a brighter note... I finally finished my "market research". I went to all the stores I wanted to in order to look at prices. I forwarded all the gathered info along to my friend, who said he'd be probably buying me my camera sometime this week.. so hopefully by Monday I'll have one!! Then I'll be able to do all the running round in the world, and show lots of cool things about Roman life...

For now, you guys are gonna have to make do with this....

This is a shot of my upstairs neighbour's satellite dish.
As you can see, today's sky was just awful... the flash was so overpowering it seemed darker than it actually was, but it was still pretty grey all day. Kind of sickening really. I hate grey!

We had amazing weather only a week ago, but I didn't have my camera then either.

OK some serious changes need to take place next week:
1. We need some sunshine!
2. We need my camera back!!!

Is it Sunday yet??

sunshinecity 11 years ago
thanks alina... unfortunately my camera was dropped by an idiot friend of mine... but he's been so kind as to replace it, so he should be buying it for me this week...
sunshinecity 11 years ago
thanks!! I have lots pf pics tagged "outdoors", did you search??

I actually have a scanner... just a regular one. As for the friend, I think I should count myself lucky... he could have easily just repaired the broken one, rather than get me a new one. When I have some spare cash (which seems will never happen...) I will get my broken one fixed... it was a gift after all. I have very good memories thanks to that camera!!!

OK I'm sad again now!!
lramiro520 11 years ago
OMG...is that satellite dish connected to 2 different houses?? LOL...either way, looks like a mess :-)

lol no no, just looks odd... but the two balconies above me are part of the same apartment... its actually fixed on the balcony on the above right and faces the one on the left... it looks like it's touching it, but it's not...
Not sure what's up with the wires though...

dda1605 Posted 11 years ago. Edited by dda1605 (member) 11 years ago
I don't believe you thought it was leisure trips.........It is work, only work. Of course, I will find two hours for a walk in the city (if it is not raining....) and for a good restaurant (Italian wine and parmesan will be a must).
