March 9th 2007 ~ day 68

I left early again this morning... had a few errands to run.
It was a really wonderful warm sunny day and seeing as I had some spare minutes on my hands before having to get into work, I was able to stop and take this photo that I've been meaning to photograph for some days now.
On my way to work, every morning, I pass this office building that has those mirrored windows I'm sure you're all familiar with. It's not so common to find them here in Rome, especially not in a residential ares as mine is.
On the other side of the street, directly in front of this office building is a modern church... rather ugly looking if you s me, but it as an interesting steeple. A couple of weeks ago, I happened to look up as I was driving past this office block, only to notice how beautiful the reflection of the church steeple was. I can't believe I've driven past this same building hundreds and hundreds of times, yet never noticed this!
So today, I give you the steeple reflection!!

steeple reflected

Not too shabby, huh?
Not sure you can make it out, but inside that steeple are church bells.

March 10th 2007 ~ day 69

I lived in Indonesia for four years when I was very little. It was back in the '80s when times were a bit less troubled over there.
Anyways... our house and living room especially is full of traditional Indonesian furniture. Rich dark red woods, golden paint and curious snakes and dragons carved in wood are pretty the norm, as you can see below. It's a very fascinating cultural, architecturally speaking as well!

This is a detail of once was an old sultan's Armoir.... I'm not sure exactly how far this dates back, but I believe somewhere in the 1400s, so my dad tells me.

Did I mention its spring here already??? What started off as a cloudy day ended up being really sunny!! Too bad I had already taken my picture for today.
All the plants on our balcony are blooming, and the lemon trees are expecting lemons!!! Even the kumquat tree is pregnant!!! It's pretty colourful out there... shame we have scaffolding. The building is being renovated....

Look at these colours!! No Photoshop enhancement or tweaking what so ever!

Yup that armoir is in my living room.
I often chuckle when I hear people mention "historic" buildings in the USA... I stop and think about all the ancient Roman runs here and just smile!

Americans are odd. It is part of our charm. Isn't it?

Things are a little bit newer here. My uncle lives in a very old house (by US standards) it dates back to the 1750s. A mere baby compared to what's around you.

1400's wow -- what a great piece of art/furniture. I love that style of furniture. I know what you mean -- US is an infant practically historically compared to many parts of the world... around the time of the bicentennial 1976, my aunt told me about a restaurant they had visited in the middle east that was older than our country -- imagine a business so successful that it could be sustained that long. families aren't so loyal these days, i don't think.

Italy: the making of - part III

Italy: the making of - part III

I am finally able to finish my Italy: the making of set.
I was very undecided which photo to choose. Today was such a gorgeous day, and though there is scaffolding on my building right now blocking the view, (as you can see in this shot) I still feel this pictures captures the essence of Italy's beauty, with all its decadence! And there's something about that scaffolding... I don't know what it is... but it attracts me!
My other choice would have been this one.

As you can see here, we really LOVE our balconies! They are crawling with plants, flowers, pots and more pots! Though we don't have gardens, we sure make up for it!! (View the larger version for details).
Oh and... how about those antennas huh??? LMAO... ya gotta love Italy!

Well, you must realize that these buildings you're looking at were built during the fascist regime, just before the war. The were cheap housing for the very poor, and have been pretty much neglected ever since. The were recently renovated about 2 years ago, (only the main facade)... but as far as modernizing all the rest of the place, antennas included.... forget about it!
Thanks, work is going great!

Yeah me too!!! AS ugly as they are... there's something just so unique about that view... and anyways, a sunny sky makes just about anything more likable, don't you agree??
bunæn PRO 11 years ago
The image of the antennae studded pre-war housing project fires my imagination in the same way that Fellini's movies and Nino Rota's music do.

These little glimpses of the detail of everyday life are priceless, Alex.

It's what makes Flickr a killer app.

Thank you for posting!

Have you ever seen such crazyness??? Who ever said Italians lack inventive??
We like to spice up our already historically rich city with symbols borrowed from other cultures!
Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Pyramid of Cestius.

This pyramid is a funerary monument built about 12 BC as a tomb for Caius Cestius, a member of one of the four great religious corporations at Rome, the Septemviri epulonum. If you want to read more, check out the link above.

Anyways... this "thing" kinda sticks out like a sore thumb if you ask me, seeing as it's become part of the ancient roman Aurelian walls ... but hey, after all... this sort of sums up Rome for ya!!

I love what you show us of Rome--it's not the the touristy stuff, it's the real, everyday stuff. I suppose I can imagine walking by that pyramid everyday and getting used to it, but DANG it's cool!

Sorry to hear of your allergies. You know that I must recommend nasal irrigation via a neti pot. It really is incredibly soothing, and while it might not cure you of your allergies, it would certainly help alleviate much of the symptoms and discomfort.

I think you may have inspired my photo for today with your Indo-armoire!

March 18th 2007 ~ day 77

Today was a long day...
There was some gorgeous sunshine, shame I didn't have an occasion to go out and enjoy it!
I was also supposed to go out later tonight but those plans fell through.
I guess you could say it was another typical lazy boring sunday.
Oh well... tomorrow another work week begins, and oddly enough I'm looking forward to it!

I took several beautiful shots of the plants and flowers on my balcony. I was very undecided which picture to use, but in the end I thought I'd share with you a picture that showed the entire balcony, so that you all have an idea of what having a garden "suspended in the sky" looks like!
(Please excuse the horrible scaffolding.. the building is being renovated ).

my garden suspended in the sky

Not too shabby for a garden in the sky huh??

Great balcony & garden--I'm envious!

Well, I'm actually on the 2nd floor ( as in ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor... European style) but seeing as the apartment building is on a hill, when we overlook the road it's actually as if we're actually on the 5th floor.
Thanks!
