Yes, it was! And hey, we drink EVERYTHING here in Bourbon country! ;-)

I don't know. But thank you.

Gotcha!

Thank you! I still haven't visited a distillery. But I've had bourbon balls. They do pack a punch, but they're a bit sweet for me. One is usually enough!

Split Heart

April 24, 2007

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As good as yesterday was, today was that bad. And it's only because I talked to my daughter. We actually had a good talk, but my heart is heavy because I have a choice to make, and I can't foresee the consequences. And that hurts.

New Shoes!

April 26, 2007

This afternoon I went shopping with my friend A. I had no intention of buying anything, but I found these shoes for $12.00. And then a shirt for $10.00 (so I bought it in three colors). I love getting a good bargain, especially when the original price was $50.00!

These are very girly shoes. I have a girly side to me. It usually hides within. Anyway, I couldn't help but take a photo of ze shoes.

Hope the days are getting better. Not so much for me. CT scans on my father's lungs revealed 12 new nodes of cancer. Back onto heavy duty chemo. This is 3 years for him and this battle.

I think we need to get together, trade war stories and drink a bunch of good bourbon and even better wine.

Love the shoes.

I'm so sorry about your dad. All of us have suffered, albeit in different ways. I like your idea of sharing stories and adult beverages! :-)

I will try! I feel like such a goddess in the shirts, and I'm not kidding. The shoes will have to wait until I either get a pedicure or give myself one.

Heh. No. I didn't forget any zeros.

I liked what he said, too. The past few days have brought about a few changes in my thinking, however. It's not something I want to put "out there" yet, but I am on the right path.
The shoes are cute, but they're a minor salve on a big wound. :-)

Feeling Groovy

April 30, 2007

Today is my friend Richard's birthday. Let's see...he's 46 today. We met at a French class when I first moved to France in 1993. We haven't been in touch in nearly 10 years, but I always think of him on this day.

I'm smiling here because I got a really good e-mail this afternoon. I can't talk about it now (there's a lot I can't put on the internets right now), but I'm feeling groovy.

Over the weekend, I also made a decision that, if I follow through with it, will mean some upheaval. Again, I prefer not to be public about it. When the time is right, I will be able to write more about it .

In the meantime, please know that your comments and encouragement mean a lot to me. Thank you.

Jonathan and Farley

May 1, 2007

This evening we went to another meeting of Drinking Liberally. We all met at Cheapside, which has a nice big patio.

You can see Jonathan and Farley, two DL regulars, and great guys. There were a number of newcomers at tonight's meeting, and that was cool.

Other than that, it was just a good day. I went to help my friend A. with some chores around the house; Allan ended up coming over to help, too. The weather was lovely, and that's a good thing.

May 2, 2007

Late this afternoon, we attended a peace rally down at Thoroughbred Park.

It was my first demonstration since 1988. I was in college then, and bunch of us students sat outside the library during a trustee meeting to demand the divestment of funds from South Africa. This action, among others, led the college to do just that.

When I mentioned to my friend the Media Czech that it was my first demonstration since then, he laughed and said "Boy, it has to be a big issue for you, huh?" I laughed too, and said that in France, the only people who demonstrate are spoiled civil servants whose rights (read: privileges) are in danger.

The rally was a good experience. There were people of all ages and races at the demonstration. One woman was holding a "Honk For Peace" sign; lots of people honked.

Allan saw one negative reaction to the rally: the driver of a Hummer gave a thumbs-down in passing. Heh.

From afar it might seem that I'm all about political action now. This has been a long time coming. I'm done with keeping my mouth shut. This goes for everything, not just political issues. It's just part of the Alison Revolution.

See more photos of the day here.

I went to the my first protest for the first time in... oh.. maybe 2 years? lol... and I had a blast meeting new people and enjoying all the positive feedback (nice to be on the winning side for a change!) until at the very end some fuddy-duddy passive-agressively told me I was having too much fun that this protest was supposed to be solemn and mournful out of respect for the dead! I nearly told her off but someone said she says that every week and they all just ignore her. I felt better but still I haven't been back since. Maybe one day.

Yes, it's been that long. Our involvement in Iraq has now lasted longer than our involvement in WWII. Sigh.

May 3, 2007

Allan ordered a USB turntable from ThinkGeek, and it arrived today. We spent the evening listening to records from his large collection. (All of my LPs are back "home" in Pennsylvania.)

Well, I'm the one who mostly played DJ. It was so nice to listen to records again. This was Side One of the first record on Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. "Bennie and the Jets" was playing as I took this photo.

It's Raining!

May 5, 2007

Derby Day, Cinco de Mayo, and 24 Hours of Flickr! Allan and I spent the afternoon at Keeneland with friends. This is a racetrack, but it's not where the Kentucky Derby happens. That's at Churchill Downs in Louisville (or Lou-ah-vul). A few minutes before the race started, it began to rain, and the people standing at track level headed for shelter. This little boy ran and danced in the rain. I loved the way he embraced the warm droplets!

By the time the race started, the rain had stopped (for the time being) and people were back near the track, watching the display of the race on the tote board.

After we left Keeneland, we shifted gears and went to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at a Mexican restaurant down the street from our house. The restaurant set up an outdoor patio especially for the fiesta. We got a table with an umbrella, which was great while the setting sun was still shining. It began to rain, however, and we ended up drenched. Still we'd managed to eat our parrilla (very interesting, that word!) by the time the rain came down hard.

It was a good day, for sure.
sunshinecity 11 years ago
you mention parilla, explained by wikipedia as as a form of torture... but you meant the kind you eat, called paella, right??
Did I miss the pun??

lovely shot

~ sunshinecity,
a picture, a story
AliThinks Posted 11 years ago. Edited by AliThinks (member) 11 years ago
No, I meant parilla, not paella. I didn't try to make a pun. Parrilla was described as fajitas for four people, with grilled shrimp, scallops, chicken, pork, carnitas, and beef. If you look at the Wikipedia link for parrilla, you'll notice that it can mean a barbecue or grill in South America.

The meat was prepared with red and green bell peppers and onions. We each received a plate of rice, refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. We also had three flour tortillas each. We took a bit of the meat or seafood, seasoned it with pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream, rolled it up and ate it. For me, the rice and beans was superfluous.

It really was delicious food. I wish we had had longer to enjoy it. The rain made us eat faster than usual!

I knew exactly what you meant "it can mean a barbecue or grill in South America" and had no idea it was related to torture. wow, ooh, god that just made my stomach turn. Because Every Girl Needs A Tiara

May 11, 2007

Every girl needs a tiara. I wore mine the other day so that I could post a photo on my blog. I'd written that I was nervous about visiting the dentist, that I might need a crown, and weren't crowns for old people? And LOTS of people my age or younger said 'NO!" So I wrote another blog entry saying "OKAY! CROWNS ARE NOT FOR OLD PEOPLE." And that degenerated into a discussion of head ornaments, from crowns to tiaras.

So I posted a photo of myself in my tiara, which I've owned for a couple of years now. Because every girl needs a tiara.

Paint Chips and Such

May 12, 2007

We spent the afternoon working on The Basement. Last weekend I cleared out a bunch of empty cardboard boxes. Today we put up some new shelves, and I moved a bunch of stuff, including all the Christmas decorations, to their new place in another room down there.

The basement is comprised of three rooms, one large and two smaller ones. We're going to keep the largest room for storage, but we want to turn the other two into more "living" space. One of the rooms will be for the exercise equipment (none of which is set up and being used right now) and the other room will be for hanging out, watching TV, listening to music, doing crafts, and other such things.

There's a lot that needs to be done. First order of business is clearing out the one room to prepare it for painting. I'm already thinking of colors, as you can see from the photo here. One of the things I pulled out of there were these old metal shelves. They're really cool, actually, and I scrubbed and hosed them down. When they were dry, I spray painted them bright colors. Because I like bright things.

Anyway, I've been meaning to write here about how I've been feeling lately. I have been so consumed with my own thoughts and issues that I don't have the energy to visit other diaries. The same thing is happening with all the blogs I read. If I even read a blog entry, chances are I won't comment. It feels bad, because I really do care about all of the people I've met online. But right now I just have things to figure out.

In other news, my therapy is going very well. :-) Just remember that I haven't forgotten you.

I'm glad to hear you've been busy and that therapy is going well for you. It's good to get things off your chest!
I'm sure I'm not the only one who misses your presence, but it's important you take care of yourself first!

I love your Tiara! And you know... I don't have one
= (
I feel like I've missed out!! My bday is June 5th. I'll be 31 *ugh*... Maybe I can get one for then and wear it at my party???
LOL
