@Samrag : I'm on with fil himself on this one. Because there is text comments too, it shouldn't be a problem, the topic being devided after a while into different pages.
The update think phil is talking about... well, that's just one more thing people would HAVE TO do... not sure it's gonna work out well.
Let's say, the ones who want to do it might, the others can just ignore it.

And about the difference members/topics numbers... it's always like that.
Some people will just read but never participate, some others are shy and it will take some time for them to step in, some just answered "yes" to the invitation and forgot about it, others thought they were up to it and found out (or think) they aren't but won't quit the group...
No big deal I think.

The big question is : how many of us will still be there on december the 31st ?
Hehe.
:)

if "only" 150" started, I fear that no that many will survive until the end (and I might be part of those people), let's see end of January and make linear regression to see where it ends ;o)

@admin: I think some of the most important point said here should be on the group description, it get lost among stupid comments like this one ;o)

Ok... I have solved this HUGE discussion posting to my own satisfaction. I just created links to each day at the beginning of the post - and created a link at each day back to the beginning (home). That will make it much easier to navigate if people are for example looking for specific picture/day.

If anyone wants to do similar thing - but doesn't have the knowledge as to how to do it - they can email me.

The pool is now open to posting !
Remember :
you can only post a picture/week... so choose carefully which one is the highlight of your week.
And there is no particular day you have to post... do it whenever you feel like it.

And don't forget the only rule :
Posted pictures must be ones that already are on your topics !
It will be heavily administrated.
But I'm sure we won't have to delete any picture, right ?
Hehe.
Have fun.

Hmm.. Im not really comfortable with that thousand sth voyeurs up there.. If they do not participate - to my mind there is no need to be here. Is it possible to kick them out of here, lets say, on the first of February? Or March? I mean, if they havent started by then. Well.. they wont!!! Or is it that you need that big number of participants even if it's fake?

Samrag Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Samrag (member) 11 years ago
@ Karinga: Unless this group is made completely private you can't lock anyone out. Both members and non-members can view the threads, so kicking them voyeuers out isn't really going to solve anything.

@ Philippe: Am I correct?
DaBourz 11 years ago
SamRag, you're correct, you can see the threads even if you're not a FlickR member.

Plus i'll would say that it is the way it works on most groups and forums, 10% participating and 90% lurking.

That doesn't mean people looking have not a real interest in photo or following some of the threads of people they know.

That don't annoy me at all.
cautious range [deleted] Posted 11 years ago. Edited by cautious range (member) 11 years ago
Mh, the group is "half" private, I think.
You can read the threads when not a member, or not?

You can mark the threads as not readable from the outside

But kicking the lurkers, mh, will be an effort to find out, who really is not participating though.

Edit for clarity
karinga 11 years ago
I know that some groups cannot be viewed if one is not a member, usually those are invitation groups.. I dont mind people watching my topic, same shots are in my photostream which is accessible to anyone. But I like things in order:) and somehow such a big number of people just lurking above all us who post.. well, doesnt sound like order;) I guess I dont really understand the reasons behind joining such an interactive group and doing nothing.. I agree it is too early to sort members out, especially that some of them participate with comments. That's why I offered to wait a month or two. BUT, as NicoleB said, I dont know if it is possible to sort people out...
Anyways, just sharing my thoughts, wont cry if it stays as it is;)
leroyer 11 years ago
You're sharing your thought, karinga, an you're right to do so.

Now...
I know there is only around a bit above 10% of the group members that participate. Which is actually really not a surprise.
In the 90% left you can find :
- People who answered an invitation wihtout really thinking about it, just as a reflex.
- People who thought they mght give it a try and forgot about it.
- People who want to start it, but never find the time to do so, but still hope to.
- People who don't participate for any sorts of reasons but want to follow some threads.
- People who joined for any sorts of reasons, didn't find what they were looking for, but don't care to leave even if they'll never participate.
- People who say yes to all the invitations they get.
- People who died after joining but before having a chance to participate

And I'm sure a lot more of different ones...

We can't tell the difference between them.
So kicking them all out wouldn't be really fair.
That's the first point.

The second point is that it would take so much time for us to do, it's just not worth it.

The third is that people are joining continuously, making it hard to follow who should stay and ho should leave.

And the fourth point, which for me is really important, is that, yes, anyone can see the pictures and read the threads even if not a member of flickr. It's a public space.
The invitation only is just because it's easier to administrate things if a problem occurs one day.
And it's meant that way.
As you said, our pictures are public (most of them), so... nothing's really private here.

Let's not care about the silent ones... most of them, I'm sure, don't even come on the group.
:)
cautious range [deleted] 11 years ago
I agree on that one.
Silent ones usually don't bother reading discussion or looking at pictures.
There are few that do, but people looking for certain things will sure enough go to a group where they find those things, uhm, easier :)

Dans les règles on lit en effet "You'll HAVE TO post one, (and only one !) photo for each day of 2007 in a NEW message each time, that will represent your day or its highlight", ce qui tend à autoriser l'utilisation de photos prises à n'importe quelle date, du moment qu'elles représentent la journée, mais plus bas il est aussi précisé que "You'll have to take ONE PICTURE A DAY", ce qui suggère que les photos doivent au moins être prises spécifiquement pour illustrer la journée.

Et mille excuses si jamais la réponse était déjà écrite quelque part et que je ne l'ai pas vue.

Yep, la photo doit avoir été prise le jour en question. Pas tant le jour en termes horaires qu'en termes de ce qui sépare le lever du coucher.

To answer a question posed here :
Photos posted for a day have to be taken that same day.
Day doesn't mean from midnight to midnight though, but from waking up to going back for a night's sleep.

Another question: it's possible change (and I know you already said no) 2 of my pics (they are without comments - 4th & 5th ) from photomontage to one of the photo. So I am within the rules and I can post for the first week.
leroyer Posted 11 years ago. Edited by leroyer (member) 11 years ago
If they are photomontage, you have to change them... and better into one photo from the photomontage itself.

So, the rule is no, no change of image.
Unless you didn't follow the rules in the first place. Then, you must change them.

when it's sunday, can we just upload our pic of the week automatically or is there a certain time? Do we have to wait for a "ready steady go"??
durhamyankee 11 years ago
Hey,

Are these evolving rules being updated somewhere systematically and in a way that people can easily follow? The rule about diptych's, for instance, is not on the main info page....

I also find it hard to keep track of the several official threads... anyone recommend a solid way to do this?
leroyer 11 years ago
You can post your photo whenever you like.
The rules don't really change... the diptych thing is just something about interpretation : a diptych is not a photo, it's two photos put together.

And for the threads... you got them all linked down the main page.

I've started the third week of posting, but I've yet to put any photos in the pool. The rule says one photo per week in the pool and you can post them any day. Does this mean that since we are in the third week, I may put two or three photos in the pool at once to catch up? If not, it doesn't matter, I just thought I'd ask. Merci!
alibaba0 11 years ago
"You can post your photo whenever you like."

Yes but bear in mind that flickr limitations will not allow you to put a photo in the pool on Saturday (for the first week) and then another one on Wednesday (for the second week). So actually you will have to stick to a posting day or else you won't be able to put one photo per week.

Am I wrong?
alibaba0 Posted 11 years ago. Edited by alibaba0 (member) 11 years ago
I didn't see it before posting my own, but osbornb's question actually adresses the same issue I think :-)
sunshinecity 11 years ago

leroyer 11 years ago
Thing is, it's limited to a 1 photo/week post in the pool.
So when you post a photo, you can't post the next one before 7 days.
If you missed the first 2 weeks, well, you won't catch up on that, sorry.

I have a question, but not sure who it's directed too... and that's my problem!!
In the early days of this diary group, one of the firsts posts I ever read in here, regarded a certain "suave effect" or something like that.
It's a certain effect applied to photographs, obtained through photoshop... and this person gave the link to a tutorial...
I wanted to try it out, but unfortunately I forgot who posted about it (so I can't ask them) and didn't save the link to the tutorial...

some comments:

you cannot remove someone, because in the rules you said that people can post on their stream when they can, so if someone has been shooting a picture a day and post everything in his stream on the 31/12/2007, he is normally following the rules (but I agree this is not very cool)

for the photo collage: I've started my stream with one, because I thaught it meant something, and having to select one pic out of the seven or eight I glued in one would have had not a sense. Was I really a bad guy by doing so? do you really want me to change that first pic?

for all the official themes that comes out, like the "what you see in the morning" can it be a "new pic" or does it have to be a pic actually used in our daily stream?

1. Firstly, of course I remembered it wrong, it was the dooce effect, and not the suave effect! LOL

2. It was from a poster who's diary I read every day... I can't believe I didn't think to look there first!

Anyways, if you're curious, the poster was AliThinks and trhe effect she was talking about is here.

1- Somebody posting all his photos on the 12/31/2007 is playing by the rules, of course. And wouldn't be removed for that.
But, hey, we CAN remove anybody we want.
Afraid ??
You should.

2- Let me check that out... hmmm... I hadn't seen it. It's an old entry, so as for anybody in that case, I leave it up to you. It doesn't fit the rules, so if you want to/can change it, you're welcome to do so.

But i'm not going to quit -- I will however, reduce the time I spend viewing others as frequently. There are about 25 or so of you that I keep up with daily. You feel like family I'm not going to go away, just visit less.....
The project (daily photos) still has a lot of value for me -- Miss U philippe, but I know I'll see you in your stream and who knows maybe i'll make it ot paris for a meeting :-)

Anyone have a problem with the phantom photos getting in your topic for this group? I do -- and elsewhere in my photo stream.

"Phantom photos" was the term people were using in the help forum to describe random photos that were not their own, which were showing up in their streams, sets, or, in the case of this group, the journal topics. Flickr went down for a "massage" shortly after I posted my question here, then back up, then down again for quite some time, I think. There's a full explanation of what happened over on Flickr Blog. A lot of people, including me, thought Flickr had been hacked, but this was not the case. Lucky for all those who missed the event, it was kind of unnerving.

I'm sorry to see that Philippe left the group he started - I miss him , and was somewhat surprised when I linked to his diary tom see it no longer exists; neither can I see his photostream. Bummer, because I enjoyed his company, and the insight into his life. Anyway, the group carries on, it has its own momentum, and maybe didn't need a guru after all.
