Group DescriptionMany underwater organisms communicate by producing or emitting light. A close study of some of these bioluminescent creatures inspired the exhibit, "The Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang." The installation is on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History from September 3, 2011 through January 8, 2012.
Gallery visitors spent one September afternoon creating their own deep-sea organisms using glow sticks and a photographic technique called "light painting."
We hope you're inspired to create your own bioluminescent marine creations and share them with our group.
