Welcome to the 5th annual Summer Joust!
In celebration of our 5th anniversary we have a couple extra additions this year.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before the contest officially starts in June, there is a bonus challenge!

Summer Joust Poster
Create a new scene that will serve as the cover image and poster for the next 5 Summer Jousts! Subject matter is up to you, it should be aimed at capturing the spirit of the contest, and the winner will be selected by John and myself.
Prize is bragging rights, and of course seeing your model used for Summer Joust promotions (you will be credited naturally).
Digital entries are accepted for this bonus challenge.
Timeframe: May 22nd - August 10th.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Rules
The contest runs June 1st through July 31st, entries will be accepted until John makes a post in this thread officially closing the contest on August 1st at 5 p.m. EST.

All entries must be new builds not shown online or publicly before June 1st 2020.
Only official LEGO elements should be used - avoid third party parts or clone bricks.

Entries may be updated as long as the contest is still open.
Entries are to be posted in the appropriate category entry thread with a link to your flickr album for the creation, or if you only choose to use one picture for your entry, link directly to the picture on flickr.
You may also enter on Instagram by tagging your photos #SummerJoust2020, and I will post your build in the appropriate entry thread.
There are no limits on picture size or quantity, though please only add one photo of each entry to this group (extras will be removed).

This is a castle building contest, so all entries should be set in the medieval times. Rough guideline being from the Fall of Rome to Columbus. No guns, modern tech, etc.
Any scale is permissible, as long as the build fits within the category.
Digital entries are not allowed.
The only category with size restrictions is 12x12 Vignette.

Each contestant can only win 1 category prize and 1 individual prize, if multiple categories are won by the same contestant, he/she chooses which prize to receive and the other prizes will be awarded to the runner ups.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Judging Method
There is a team of 7 judges who will score builds based on the following criteria:
Category: Pass/Fail
Does your build fit the category?
Majority vote of the judges decides pass/fail if the vote isn't unanimous.

Creativity ?/10
Clever approach to category, good parts use, and build originality.

Overall Build Quality ?/10
Detailing, build composition, and visual impact.

Presentation ?/5
Image quality, good backdrop, and good viewing perspective.

Final Score: ?/25

The judging will take place over a 2 week time frame, with the results released on August 15th. In order to maintain that time frame, however many judges have submitted their scores by August 14th will be the only scores used. The judges' scores will be averaged to reach the final score of each entry. In the event of a tie, I will select the winner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Individual Awards
Grand Architect: awarded to the competitor with the highest scoring entry of all categories.

Expert Artisan: awarded to the competitor with highest score in the presentation category.
Conquering Hero: awarded to the competitor with highest average score who has entered at least 3 categories (only their top 3 builds from separate categories are averaged).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Categories
12x12 Vignette
Create any medieval scene you can imagine, only one catch, it has to fit on a 12x12 or smaller base. Minimal overhang allowed, for things like tree branches and fig accessories.
Any scale is acceptable. Border is included in the 12x12 size limit, so if you want to include a border, the whole build still needs to fit on 12x12 studs.
Examples of fitting builds:

Henrietta's Hideaway by ForlornEmpire

Ivory Tower ☁️ by Dr. Zarkow

Castle Bleystone by Tino Poutiainen

The Frozen North
Snowy mountain peaks, longboats battling icy oceans, mighty ice dragons!
Show us a chilly wintery wonderland. Realistic and fantasy settings are acceptable.
The focus is on creating a believably 'cold' scene.
Examples of fitting builds:
Sabishi Monastery by -LittleJohn

The Tomb of Thramduid by Jako of Nerogue

Elador by tiberium_blue

Tri-Color
Use whatever colors you want! Well... just so long as you don't use more than three different colors in your build. Both solid and transparent colors count as separate colors. You may use additional colors as filler in the model, just so long as they are not visible.
Minifigures, animals, and their accessories are exempt.*
Besides that, there are no limitations. Build whatever sort of medieval setting you like.
Obviously strong and creative use of color should be your goal.
*The accessories and minifigure parts must be used as figures or animals to be exempt.
Examples of fitting builds:
Summer Joust 2020: Tri-Color Prize by -soccerkid6

Wizard's Gate by Tim Schwalfenberg

LEGO Architecture concept of Santa Maria del Fiore by legorevival

Every Set Could be a Castle Set
Take a set from a non-castle line and show what it could have been in a medieval setting!
Whether that means turning a starfighter into a fire breathing dragon, or a tractor-trailer into a trade convoy, or whatever else you can come up with!
You need to state which set your model is based off of, and its influence should be apparent.
Not necessary to make your medieval version as if it were an official set - go as crazy detailed as you want.
Examples of fitting builds:
Attack on Space Priestess Base by Legopold

3368 Remix - Orcish Longboat Yard by Dubbadgrim

Mitgardian Smithy by -soccerkid6

Puristic Parts
The library of LEGO elements has grown rapidly over the past years, but what can you make with only basic bricks, plates, and brick modified with stud? Only 1x1 brick with stud on one side, 1x2 brick with two studs on one side, and 1x4 brick with four studs on one side are allowed outside of traditional square plates and bricks.
All other elements are not allowed to be used visibly, or inside your model.
Examples of fitting builds:

Summer Joust 2020: Purist Parts Prize by -soccerkid6

Collab Category - Just Another 'Normal' Day
Assemble a team of builders, and work together to portray a day's activities for one specific individual. Whether that be a blacksmith going about his usual tasks at the forge, a stable boy being kidnapped by a talking tree, or mighty warrior on yet another difficult quest. It can be as mundane or wacky as you like, but should portray one cohesive story and also showcase the character traits of the subject.

Each build should portray a different activity/event of a single day in the character's life.

For example: Build 1 - Baker rising early in the morning, Build 2 - Hard at work in the bakery, Build 3 - Afternoon sales and delivery, Build 4 - Dinner at home with the family
Teams should consist of 2-4 members, and a maximum of 4 builds and a minimum of 2 builds are allowed for the category, So if you have 4 team members, each person would create 1 build. If you only have two members, each could create 1 or 2 builds, and so on.
Example of a fitting entry:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to the LCE team and judges there will be 18 prizes this year! Winners may choose to receive the 2nd place prize rather than the 1st place prize if they prefer.

The Collab reminds me of a parody I made ages ago. www.flickr.com/photos/154489981@N04/42394428674/in/datepo...

So:

The Hero

Tierce: rescuing the princess of the northern hills and killing the dragon
Sext: rescuing the princess of the neigbouring duke. And of course killing the next dragon
None: another princess, another dragon
Compline: Having sex with all those... Erm, I mean going back to loving wife and doing the dishes

Don't need the modified bricks in the puristic category. Would have loved tiles, though.

But you have to make a limitiation somehow.
Really interesting category!

Wait... the custom build for Tri-color and Simplistic parts is the same? Or is that just a mistake?

Miscellanabuilds:
I updated the links to go to the builds on flickr, and must have accidentally put the same build's url for both prizes.
Fixed now.

It's become customary for any results post to say something along the lines of: "it was an incredibly close competition."
But that has never been truer than in the case of our Poster Bonus Challenge. There was literally no difference in score between the first and last place entries! However after much thought, some disagreements, heated discussions, and eventual consensus, we have come to the shocking conclusion... that Silmaril_1 alone must be crowned winner.

Really well earned win Jonah! I think your entry was so perfect that no one wanted to risk entering themselves for fear yours wouldn't be selected :D
