Group DescriptionThis group wants to gather old and recent photos of the sugar industry in puerto rico to include the refineries, transportation, harvest, plantations, etc. During the first half of the 20th century puerto rico was an agricultural economy producing sugar and coffee as the two main cash crops. Tobacco was third and other products followed. The centrales where a micro economy unto themselves and some like guanica y aguirre were built up into thriving towns, almost self sufficient. The centrales were beautiful structures and the whole complex was a delight to see and visit. Today they are but mounds of rust as they have been abandoned and some retrofitted for other manufacturing.
