I find that the best way is to comment on other people's photostreams and then they will return the favour...

certain groups have the explore scout that checks through them, macro monday, bench monday, friday's lyrical imagery... there are others, but those are the only ones I know of

I haven't had the pleasure of making explore yet, but from others, a tip I heard was to only add one pic at a time (maybe only 1 or 2 per day) so that your contacts have a chance to comment/fave your pic and the really good ones aren't drowning in a sea of uploads!

Yeah, I follow that and I have been lucky (or not?) enough to have had two photos featured in Explore. I know it's nothign compared to many people, but I feel it's partly down to the fact I was friendly to others by commenting and by having a steady amount of uploads as opposed to uploading many at once and then having a huge gap with no uploads.
Explore likes square images. You never see photo's in portrait orientation make it to front page of Explore unless boarders are added to make it square. Lots of comments help but I have had photo's that were in no group and less than 10 comments make it into explore.

Wow, that really enforces some of the points people make questioning the algorithm deciding what images make it into Explore... It really does make you wonder...

i notice one thing which photo in coming up fast in ur popular that will b explore
i send my some photos in groups but they did not toExplore and today i did not send in any Grop and its make Explore
i m really really Confused What s the trick
some times my tricks worked and some times not
I don't know "the" trick, even though I've been reasonably fortunate at getting images of mine in Explore (186 in Explore since the beginning of 2009). I have read that having your photo in groups is OK only to a point, and the Explore algorithm will start penalizing your image if it's in "too many" groups. One of the discussion groups has a comment from a Flickr Staff person saying that 5 or fewer groups is likely OK. Until an image of mine makes Explore (or looks as if it never will, no matter what), I put it in 3 or 4 groups MAX -- and only groups where I have a good history of getting comments.

Networking is important -- having contacts who comment on your photos as you comment on theirs. It also seems to help if commenting and faving happens at a fairly fast pace.

It has gotten harder for me to get an image in Explore as my overall traffic picked up, almost as if the Explore algorithm wants more from me now. :) I don't know what's up with that. Also, the algorithm is known to change from time to time, so it's really tough to figure out a "formula" to keep getting photos in Explore.

My best suggestion is to take great photos, nurture good contacts and relax. Some photos will make Explore, some won't, no matter what you do or how good you are.

What's important, as Celeste M says, is taking great images and beign proud of them. If some people take the time to comment on your photostream and be nice, sociable people then great!

Explore is just a bonus.

Sammie and Celest I totaly agree! I've been posting since March - best experience for me has been steady personal improvement which has come from sharing and dicussing photos with contacts.
