STICKY The thread of second chances?

trash-star [deleted] says:

I seem to recall there being such a thread at one time. Either it's gone, or my google-fu is all binged up, so please don't be upset by my starting another.

In this case, the following was rejected from the submission queue in error. It's bright, yes, but the light is all wrong for daylight. Admins/mods, please check it out and let me know if it'll be alright to resubmit it. Thanks.

The first image is in the group. There is no reason the others would have been rejected. They aren't even in the vague, questionable area. Try submitting again.

Not night enough?
I interpreted this one to be a night image, too far advanced into darkness to count as sunset.

I think most admins would reject this as a sunset photo. It doesn't even appear to be a long exposure. Although it wasn't I who rejected it, I would not even consider it on the edge or give it a closer look.

Well, sorry. The lack of sun, the fractional percentage of pink/orange limited at the horizon with most of the sky dark, and the intensity of the artificial light compared to ambient all had me fooled. If I had realized it was so open-and-shut I would not have created the bother to ask.

Nice images and the kind of photos I like to take and look at, but a quick glance at the rules makes it pretty explict:

"To be accepted, the images must show an exterior night ambiance. You have to be able to tell it's night outside.

Don't post dusk and sunrise/sunset images. If the sun is in the image it does not belong in this group. If the sky is orange or pink because of the setting/rising sun, it does not belong in the group. Midnight sun is still sun. Images with a sunset, sunrise, dusk, etc. tags will be deleted without further consideration."

Rob Langston is a group administrator Rob Langston says:

Yeah, I'd have rejected that too. It's not because it's a bad photo or anything -- quite the contrary. But, that's clearly not (according to the group criteria) not a "night image". Night, from this group's perspective, is full on .. No pink/red/orange (except light pollution).

But, just because it's not applicable to the group shouldn't be taken as a ding on the image. When we review the 400 or so images that are submitted daily, we're presented with a thumbnail of the image (like 240 x 200). If there's a band of pink/orange at the horizon and there isn't something like star trails or a Milky Way spread (both of which show it was a long exposure) it's likely to be rejected. Often, I'll right click and open a new tab to be sure (faint star trails aren't always obvious in the thumbnail), but it's sometimes a subjective judgement call, yeah. There's usually enough cues (street lights, deep shadows, reflections, dark/black sky, star trails, etc) to make the call. But, that's why this thread is here.

But, no.. that very nice image isn't a "night image". :)

Right, believe it or not I read the group criteria several times over!

Since the sky had only fractional percentage of orange limited to the horizon, my dinosaur brain interpreted the image as passing beyond the point of dusk. I was unable to read any of the (non-illuminated) controls of the capture device.

Only now it seems to me my brain was evidently more calibrated to civil dusk while I knew nothing of nautical and astronomical dusk.

Well, sorry about that.

The lighting here is an LED street light. The darkness in the background should be a fair indicator of night time.

Many of my photos got rejected and I don't have the faintest idea why. I allways posted these photos in the evening, 6-8 PM CET.

But when I posted the same photos a few days later in the morning or afternoon they got accepted!

I think this has something to do with the admins and mods. Looks like one of them rejects a lot!

Question for the members above: Did you posted your rejected photos also after 6 PM CET?
18 months ago (permalink)

trash-star [deleted] says:

Stewie1980:

Looking at your photos in the pool, I think some are borderline with regard to meeting the group's criteria. In a lot of those cases, it's a subjective call whether they fall on one side of the line or the other. I guess you found the time when that line moves a little.

The top photo looks like a blue hour pic. It may / may not make it. The bottom two should have been approved. First question, how do you know they were rejected? There have been delays in the approval queue this summer, so maybe they are stuck in that limbo. There is a way to check their status, click here, which you should do.

just saw there stil pending thx for the advise, how long does it usually take for a picture to get approved?
13 months ago (permalink)

trash-star [deleted] says:

Right now...I don't know. The group gets a lot of submissions, and it sounds like the queue became really backed up over the summer. It used to be a few days, but is now longer. Anyway, if your photos are pending, they weren't rejected, and there isn't much you can do as long as that is the case.

Hello, I don't know why my photo first got posted in the photo pool, and then deleted: it is definitely a night image, just an HDR made of 5 exposures, therefore almost free of entirely black shadows. Any chance I can resubmit it?

You can, if you haven't already, resubmit it. This should have been accepted. But, please note that there's a truly epic backlog of photos in the submission queue. So it may be awhile until it gets approved. We're working on it.

Michael SA is a group moderator Michael SA says:

Hi Domenico,
Admin and mods are currently working through the backlog.
Less than a week ago there were some 30k images awaiting moderation, we're down to a bit over 18k as I write this.
I'm not sure how the other mods are operating, but I'm trying to balance it out at about 70/30% - the 70% of my time working on the most recent end of the queue.
I just had a quick (lol) look through the oldest thousand images and only saw one of your shots, which I have added to the group.
With this many images in the list awaiting approval it makes it very difficult to find individual images as (we only see 20 per screen)
Thank you for taking the time to show interest in the group and asking this question, we see so many images from contributors that 'post and run' - maybe for views or to try to hit 'explore' - I'm not sure. but I do sincerely thank you for your interest.
Regards,
Michael (Mod Night Images)

There are still 8,000 pictures in the queue! When I started as mod just before X-mas there were 30,000. so we're getting there, but it takes time. In this process we might accidently deny pictures that should have been in. Don't take it personally, mistakes happen. We hope to be through very soon, and that after that the queue will be cleared much faster :-)
