Thanks for all your fabulous submission so far. The pool is feeling very much like a swim though a Xanaduian mindscape.

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree"
With these lines from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem, and with eerie visions of a Gothic mansion obscured by fog, ornate wrought iron, and exotic plant and animal life, we are enticed, perhaps against our better judgement, into Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane (1941).
A clip of the opening sequence (sadly lacking the original sound track) can be seen here.
Cinematographer Gregg Toland invented and used special "deep focus" lenses, which gave the film a unique look and allowed everything from the foreground to the distant background to remaining excruciatingly sharp focus. This produces an arguably menacing feeling of relentless scrutiny.
This group invites submissions of anything inspired by, reminiscent of, or otherwise pertaining to the fictional Kane estate of Xanadu. Shots of the Hearst Castle, which inspired the filmic estate of Xanadu, are also welcome. However it would be preferable if they are captured in some way that evokes the atmosphere of the film itself, or perhaps comments upon the relationship between the "real" Castle and the film version.
both B&W and colour submission, and analogue as well as digital capture are accepted in this group. I think it would be good to encourage film-based capture though, and also any kind of home made or adapted equipment, in the spirit of Gregg Toland's inventiveness.
