Guest cottages moulder and decay on the outskirts of the hamlet called Amboy, California, which lies deep and lonesome in the Mojave Desert.

US Highway 66 passes through Amboy--the same Route 66 you were supposed to get your kicks on--but that road was superseded decades ago by the federal Interstate Highway System. In the early 20th century it was the principal driving route from Chicago to Los Angeles. Nowadays it's incomplete, poorly maintained, and not traveled for any long distances.

When Route 66 died, there was little reason for travelers to pass through Amboy, lying as it does in a desolate and unforgiving desert, and much of the infrastructure there was abandoned. Now it's a destination in itself for people like me, people like you, who want to see once useful things softly claw at their own history as they pass away.
