This app is an attractive piece of crap. Here are all the reasons why.

1. Most apps/programs put the FAQ and other links where they can be easily found, usually somewhere at the top of the website or at the bottom center, and also use a contrasting color and normal size for the links to (again) make them easy to see.

Not so with Flixtractr. The links to the FAQ and other info is in really small font that is almost the same color as the website, and are located at the bottom right corner (non-standard placement) making you have to look for them. Fifteen seconds in and I'm already annoyed.

2. To even be able to read the FAQs, you have to first connect to your Flickr account and authorize the app.

WTH? I have to give this program access to my account JUST TO READ the Frequently Asked Questions? Not a chance in hell, normally. I only did it this time because I tried to read them *after* I had already used the app and logged out of it, and then had questions about its functionality. Totally unacceptable.

3. The FAQs say that Flixtractr downloads pics in their original size. This is misleading. Only Flickr Pro subscribers can download their pics in the original sizes. The same rules that apply on the Flickr website apply to third-party apps for Flickr.

4. Despite what it says, Flixtractr does NOT create .zip archive downloads. Your download will just be a file with no extension (see below). Users who are not tech savvy will not know how to fix this (Win: Right click on file > choose Rename > move cursor to end of file name (do not delete name) >add .zip to end of name > hit "Enter" key to save. Ex: Set1.zip).

The FAQs say that it's the browser's job to add the .zip extension to the download, and says this is why a recent version of Chrome or Firefox is required. That's news to me and I'm a techie. Since when do browsers "auto-magically" create zip files? They only download what is provided by the site being downloaded from.

So, for example, if a website was providing "somefile.exe" files for download, that's what my browser would download. If they forgot to add the .exe to the end of the name, my browser would just download "somefile". If I didn't know the file was an .exe file and didn't know how to manually add the .exe ending to the name, I would not be able to open and use the file.

5. Flixtractr does at least keep the names of your pics. But, keeping the names is USELESS because of what it does TO the names.

First, it converts the photo names to all lowercase letters. Second, it unnecessarily adds a number to the name of your pics. Then, if there are multiple words in the name it adds underscores between them. You end up with pictures named 05_foggy_morning_meadow.jpg for example. And then you have to go through and rename all of them one by one... or hunt down, download, install, and then learn to use a bulk photo naming/renaming program.

Conclusion: Due to the app creator's laziness, this app is neither easy nor useful. The app's website lacks information, users have to allow the app to access their Flickr account just to read the FAQs, the app itself doesn't do what its creator says it does, and what it does do it doesn't do very well.

How does this app make downloading pics from Flickr "easy" or convenient when there is so much hassle involved to use it?

The creator of Flixtractr could have (and should have) programmed the app to create .zip files "on the fly" for download, instead of trying to leave it up to the browser, and then the user, failing that.

What ever happened to the belief that one should do a task right, or not at all?
