Suggestify

An app by straup

suggestify by straup
This is a site to allow you to geotag other people's photos on Flickr by suggesting a location to the photo's owner. Likewise, someone else can offer you suggestions of where your un-geotagged photos were taken.

That location information is stored here until the photo's owner approves (or rejects) the suggestion. If approved, the photo is geotagged on Flickr (using the Flickr API) and the suggestor is credited by adding a special tag to the photo.

The site is still very much in the alpha-beta-disco-disco-danceball-revolution stage. It works but if something sometimes doesn't work, I'm not surprised. Now that the basic functionality is in place, I'm slowly going through looking for edge cases and gotchas. Please be sure to take a look at the list of known-knowns.

This idea has been long overdue on flickr! Love it.

would be fun to be able to start from something more broad than a user search? Maybe a snapshot of some recent uploads you can quickly scan for places your recognize?

Or better than recent, older non-geotagged uploads. Recent ones may not have just been tagged up by the author?

Recent non-geotagged from contacts or FF collectively?

The ability to scope a query to something other than a specific user is definitely on the list.

The source code is available on Github, for anyone who's interested in poking around.

Way cool. I've always thought flickr should have an option like this.
You rock.

Noticed the permalinks for suggestion pages... me-thinks this app is in need of a GM script to jump from photo pages? Know if one exists already? (nothing in flickr hacks that I can tell).

Also, those permalinks to suggestion pages appear to be broken for me right now.

Any chance they could work on any photo (even already tagged ones?)... this would effectively allow you to suggest corrections/refinements too?

Hi, what's the latest on this? Is it in active development? Are there any other tools out there that do anything like this? I only ask as it is *such* a great idea and would be massively useful. Thanks

Looks good. Is it still working? or discovered to be dodgy? or still in active development? or what?

well, it seems that development is not in progress anymore.

i would like to suggest one additional function - direct url input for picture to suggestify. why this - it seems the carousel displays just a limited number of photos and if the photo is rather old, one might not find it in the pictrure-strip.

i would be great to get some response in any case.

cheers and thanks

I geo-tagged the photos of me with Alice Cooper that I have the copyright to (since, I mean, I took them with my camera at the after-show fan meet-n-greet) and I made sure that the EXIF wasn't stripped so that the time and date would be on there. I kind of was planning ahead in case someone would cut out my head and do a crude paste-job with Photoshop.

If I use this application does it open the possibility that someone might gleefully vandalize my precious digital photos of one of my musical idols?

I'd love to see the positive potential of this application. It's a brilliant and innovate idea for an app!!

Damn! I need more sleep!

I just thought of something! Back up the photos as they have always been since I ul-ed them to my computer the first time and especially back them up to non-volatile flash storage i. e. flash drive. Best of all back it up to three different sources/devices. Then if someone wants to paste their face over mine I could be like, "Say what?" And then it could be settled in internet court where they shall be rick-rolled until 500 years in the future for desecrating my favorite photos or something.

Anyway, yeah, I just don't want anybody who's jealous to mess with my EXIF stuff.

This experience taught me that I definitely am under my normal dose of caffeine today. lol! :P

Just stumbled across the flickr.photos.suggestions API methods. Are these new? Anyone using them? (I am pretty certain Suggestify pre-dates their appearance)
