Ilulissat is located at 69°13′N, 51°06′W and about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. In translation Ilulissat is the Greenlandic word for "The Icebergs".

"Ilulissat Icefjord" was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 2004.
