Temple of Poseidon at Night
"Place me on Sunium's marbled steep,
Where nothing, save the waves and I,
May hear our mutual murmurs sweep ..."
(Lord Byron)
The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion with its typical hexastyle design is a classic example of an ancient Greek temple. The marble columns are arranged according to the doric order. This temple is considered one of the most important sanctuaries in Attica and one of the top archaeological sites in Greece. The site usually closes its doors at sunset, however it remains open until 1 a.m. on full-moon nights (with free admission after 8 p.m.).
