That was a kind of very powerful spotlight pointing to the sky. The source was slightly above the temple somewhere on the hill. Some other pictures of that light you can see here: zhekajap.fotopic.net/c1136827_25.html

Actually I live in Nagoya and it was only one-day trip to Kyoto, so I can't tell fo sure what will be in one week. But last sunday (Nov. 12) it was very nice. However, most of the trees only start to change colors and that time there were not so many red trees.
I also prefer very bright colors - red, yellow, orange ;-)
Also I heard that this kind of lighting at Kiyomizudera is some special event and it will not last for long time.

I made the same pictures when we were there in nov 06. It took me about 20 shots to get one which is acceptable (I forgot my tripod). Yours is really good work!

In fact it was prohibited to use tripods at that place :-) But I was using a very tiny one and as there was a big crowd around me, no one even noticed it :-)) I took only 4 shots and this is the last one.
