Slightly photoshopped...

Slightly photoshopped... by zepper_7.
I was witing something down at work today and decided to create my own take on Escher's hand drawing one another. This was actually a composite of 3 images and a LOT of layers. Perhaps if I was better versed in PS it would have taken fewer. Purists will also notice that the original drawing has the right hand drawing the left and the left drawing the right. Turns out Escher may have been a contortionist as I nearly sprained my wrist trying to get the angle right. This may not be the final version anyway...

For Strobists: All shots lit with 1 SB-25 bounced on the ceiling at 1/2 power.

NOTE: The powers that be at Flickr placed this photo into Flickr's "Explore" as one of the top 500 most interesting photos on a given day.

Technical:
Technical - what can I say ... I couldnt do this on PS without a lot of time and effort..
Composition:
a single comment I would have been to make the hands smaller in the frame so they fit on the page like in the original escher print .. the faded 'upper hand' is distracting because the eye is drawn to the lack of overlap. Ditto for the elastic band the key to this is symmetry and the band breaks that up.
Eye Appeal:
Makes me smile .. as does the original picture .. for that I have to say it is appealing
Commercial Viability:
I think the Escher family would be all over you for rights ... so..

Commercial Viability: 7 or 8, but not quite sure for what ;)

Hard to evaluate technically for those who don't use photoshop. As a special effect it seems well done except for the strong light spot at the upper wrist and the too abrupt wrist cutoff.
Composition: 7
If the hands are the subject I think it would be better to place them at the center but it's also acceptable this way. Maybe it could have a few extra space on the top.
Eye Appeal: 7
Very creative and original. One has to look.
Commercial Viability: 6
I don't see much uses for this image... Maybe to a pen's advertise?

Another suggestion would be to use a mask and a gradient to make the transition from photo to drawing less abrupt.

Layer masks would help smooth the transition, also on my version of this I photoshopped the lot, rather than actually doing any drawing and attempting to get everything lined up, much less stress. I then placed them onto a page which had been photographed seperately & sized them to the paper.

Derek, that's actually exactly what I did. If you're talking about the transition from real hand to drawing, I made it abrupt on purpose because the original Escher drawing had a rather quick transition. Everything that was "drawn" on the paper was drawn in photoshop. The problem that I had with lining things up was from trying to arch my left hand into the proper position to wrap around my right one AND hold the pen at the proper angle. Each was to be shot separately, but it ended up being easier to shoot my right hand twice.
