I wish Apple put as much R&D into making these things quality pieces of equipment as they did on the magnet itself.
This happened after about a month of normal use. The same thing happened to my iBook's power cord, but after a year, not a month.
It no longer actually supplies power to the MacBook, making my shiny new laptop a 5 pound brick.
Oh well, at least it didn't
melt .

This happened slowly, over the course of a
couple of weeks. At first I didn't pay much
attention to it, but it slowly got worse and
worse. Yesterday I pick up my MacBook, plug
it in, and no power light. Jiggling it around
and messing with it will get the light to
turn on for a few seconds, but that's it.

Not yet, the AppleCare call center closes at
7pm EST, which is early for me (I tend to get
home between 6 and 9pm), so I haven't gotten
the chance.

I wonder whether it was the magnet, or just a
faulty power cord...

i don't know how it could be the magnet when
the cord itself is clearly completely mangled

Just got off the phone with Apple. They
apparently have an ongoing internal
investigation about the MacBook Pro power
cables, and they were very interested in
getting mine back so they could check it out.
I mentioned the burn mark and they didn't
seem the slightest bit surprised.
They're overnighting me a new one, so at
least I'll be able to use my MacBook again,
finally.

cool hope it works out for ya, and them if
there haveing a problem, it sounds like there
trying to fix it
I wonder if something like yours is because
the magnet on the cord/laptop is too strong
and when pulling it off at a angle witch
makes it easier is brakeing the cord inside?

That sounds very likely, although I don't
think the problem is the magnet being too
strong. The real issue is that the connector
is way too small and smooth, and when my
hands are even the slightest bit oily, I
can't get a grip on it to remove it, so I end
up pulling on the cord.
I certainly won't be doing that with my
replacement cable, that's for sure.
The real solution here that Apple needs to
do is make a connector that is big and thick
(like most laptop power connectors). That
would make it easier to get a grip on it and make it harder to mess up the cord.

That is true, if feels like you need some
needle nose pliers to pull it out by the
plastic piece, that part of why it looks so
cool.
yea if it is caused by this it would be to
hard to fix it, with a recall and better
cords

Interesting update: Just got off the phone
with Apple again. They want me to ignore the
return shipping label that comes with the
replacement and instead wait a few days for a
FedEx label that will send it directly to
their engineers.

the plug?

I explained it pretty thoroughly in other
comments. I didn't treat the cable any
differently than any other power cable I own,
and this has never happened to me before.
The truth is that it just isn't built very
well.

Judd, I just blew through my THIRD adapter
and no, I don't yank them out by the cord.
The first and third shorted out, exactly like
yours. The second was my first replacement
from Apple and the LED wouldn't light up, so
I made them send me another. I was really
interested to read that an Apple tech told
you they were having problems with the
magsafe; the tech I spoke to yesterday said
he's had almost no complaints about them.
Guess that's why #4 is on its way, you think?

The exact same thing has happened to my cord.
One more thing to add to my list of now
broken apple products and by the amount of
simmilar cases found it seems to be a problem
with the Apple design. Finding a replecement
is not easy in South Africa where i live and
get ripped off.
It would make sense to buy one from Apple
but the $79.00 it costs in the US that should
translate to 534.3718 South African Rand goes
for R923.00. To top this off i cant seem to
find a third party replacement over here!

I'm actually on my third power cable now
(the second just stopped working... no
physical damage at all). I don't know how it
is in South Africa, but I was able to ship
back my power cable back to Apple at their
expense and get a new one for free.
There aren't any third party MagSafe power
cables though, Apple would most likely use
their patents to sue any company that makes
one.

The same thing has happend to me too...
TWICE!!
Both times Apple has replaced my power
adapter. A really bad design IMO. My third
connector has a slightly longer rubber tubing
just next to the connector. I hope that
design will make it last a little longer.
I've had my MBP for a little bit more than a
year now.
Could'nt this be a fire hazzard? This could
be big trouble for apple....

i'm on my 3rd brick too!. my powerbook brick
lasted 3 years! until i sold it...
on my mbp from 03/2006 i'm on my 3rd brick.
the first broke @ the magnet, the second on
the other side near the brick.... 1st was
exchanged by apple, the 2nd one apple refused
to change it because i'm 3 month out of
warranty... after 1 year and 3 month i
shouldn't be on my 3rd brick... hopefully the
new model that is smaller is better... i will
try to get my last replacement exchanged for
the new smaller 85w one...!!!!
