Cherry Tomatoes from my Garden

Cherry Tomatoes from my Garden by Zeetz Jones.
Because of some of the poisonous members of the nightshade family, it is not surprising that people were once afraid to eat tomatoes. They were considered inedible and poisonous in the United States until the 1800s. Vine-ripened tomatoes have a much better flavor and texture, compared with typical supermarket tomatoes that are picked green. Tomatoes that ripen on the vine are superior because of a natural hormone called ethylene that is produced by the plant. They also contain a high level of anti-oxidants. Interesting facts: Tomatoes should be stored in room temperature as a whole but cut ones should be wrapped in plastic or in an air-tight container and refrigerated. Eggplants belong to the same family (nightshade) as the tomatoes.

What an information! Yeah, agree with you, we always buy tomatoes on the vine and leave it on the counter close to the kitchen sink, keeps the flavor and sweetness. I only remove them from the vine when I use them. Didn't know that eggplant and tomatoes are siblings.

Thanks, MAY for the honorable invite to the flickr Diamond. I picked these tomatoes form my own little vine in front of my apt. Tumubo lang doon yon. I even killed the other budling kasi nakakasira ng view sa lawn ko. But this one got away. Kaya lumaki ng lumaki! I'm not sorry I didn't kill it because it has given me so much harvest I don't even know what to do with the rest. I already made pasta, sawsawan kamatis for the tosino, halo sa egg for breakfast, in a salad, and finally took a photo of it! Thanks for your comments!

12 OrangeS ~ So sorry about your account being hacked. Hope flickr police (FPD) can do something about it and may the culprit ROT in the flickr prison!

Shantaya ~ (great name!) Yes, it looks like a day for anti-oxidants! My chef (at work) doesn't know it but whenever I'm inside the refrigerated walk-in, I'd always grab some blueberries and whisper to myself, "this is my daily dose of anti oxidants!" Shh, don't tell anyone! Is my secret safe with you?!

You betcha ~ Jim! ~ not only because of their rosiness and roundness, you can also tell stories! (esp that nightshade relative they have and the room temp thing!) Thanks for posting your top tomatoes!!!

Hubby planted cherry tomatoes in a pot and we've eaten over a hundred of them (from one plant) just last month. I had no idea it is so easy to grow and sweeter than the supermarket cherry tomatoes. Ah, I'm so happy. (o^^o)

Margot ~ at first these were unwanted tomatoes srputing out of my front lawn. Who'd want tomatoes on your front lawn. I killed most of the sprouts but this one got away! I'm glad I didn't kill it because it has given me, literally, a hundred and one fruits!! (and a colorful photo to post on flickr!) ;)
