Mr. Holga goes to Mossbrae

    Newer Older

Mossbrae falls had long been on my list of waterfalls to see, so when Aaron and I made the drive to San Francisco last July, I made a point of convincing him to stop (and it took a bit of convincing actually). Little did I know that the hike in was almost going to kill me (not literally, no shades of Stand by Me here). I have a bit of a trick back, but not the kind where it does cool tricks that make you rich and famous for being the one who it belongs to. Nah, my back sometimes just decides to freak out and leave me hobbling for a few days at a time. Luckily it does not happen often and does not usually impede my normally high level of activity. But it did this day, about halfway down the train tracks in full on bright sun. I remember almost dragging myself the last quarter mile to these falls (along with much of my camera gear) and finally getting here and just having to basically lay down and stare at the falls for a bit. Not that that was a bad thing to have to do, pain in back aside, as the falls are beautiful, even in full, harsh sunlight. After a bit I was able to get back upright and make a few exposures here and there, and to little surprise, the Holga produced one of the images I liked best from this ill-fated outing. I do intend to get back, under much different conditions, at some point...

Speaking of Holga, I will be speaking at the Oregon State Fair again this summer. Like previous years, the lectures will be an hour long and free to attend (not counting admission to the fair). If interested, mark Saturday, August 27th on your calendar, 11:00 and 1:30. One lecture will be on my continuing adventures with pinhole and the other will involve its sidekick, the Holga.
