Vogel's

Vogel's

We crept around, carefully watching for snakes. In back, there's a room with a filthy old mattress on the floor and a stamped tin ceiling above. Random detritus is strewn about in the grass, though I doubt many would see these things past mid-spring, when the grass has grown high.

It was so peaceful here. There were no cars passing by; we had full sunshine at last for the first time in two days, and we could hear only the occasional bird call as the sun set. The trees arched overhead, a rustling canopy. Once, Vogel's must have been a busy little stop on 66, people going in and emerging with paper bags of food and sodas and maybe even ice cream sandwiches. Now it is likely frequented only by Routies and the creatures of the air and wood.

Fallen Mount

Fallen Mount

An old bicycle has found an odd final resting place in the grass. Who left it here? Or was it dumped?

Fallen In

Fallen In

This is definitely not a place one wants to go inside, poking around—like so many. I wonder how long Vogel's has been left to the elements? Does anyone know?

Life Finds A Way

Life Finds A Way

A pair of trees growing up through the concrete at Vogel's. It's so hard to resist stuff like this!
