I can't believe that you really did that!
You are so crazy. Well, this is probably one of the funniest things you could do.
This is so retarded, I would love to do that one day :).

Dude, I've taken naps in the park back when I was in school in chicago, even slept on a park bench on a great summers night in Grant Park for a couple hours with friends back in those crazy days... even a nap on the beach the morning after the Chicago midnight ride (aka. Chicago Late Ride) but that's because it was enjoyable, quiet, peaceful. I cannot fathom what in the world would poses you to stake out an overnight camp right in the middle of times square. It NEVER sleeps. The noise must have been unbearable. The comotion, the stress. I've even slept out under the stars mid winter, sub zero, on bluffs overlooking the Manistee river in Michigan... and I enjoyed it (with my -40 bag and proper gear)... but still I do not get this.

Sure it's good for a hoot and it makes a GREAT picture (you're missing a central stove, fire or lantern as the center of camp) ...and perhaps I'm just getting old and conservative, but a hoot is not enough a reason for me to understand your motivations. Can times square ever get that quiet, that beautiful, even when New York is in the 80's overnight?

Plus... How in the WORLD did you get away with it? Whatever happened to loitering laws? Don't get me wrong. I'm all for Starwars fans and Apple freaks (I'm one) and you guys camping out on the streets in high traffic areas. Heh, it's all the rage these days, but when exactly did the police stop enforcing loitering laws?

this is excellent, if you get a chance to do it again, light the interiors of the tents it would look even more realistic. well done great effort. And very amusing.

Haha that's awesome! I was watching MTV2 when I got home last night, they did a few exterior shot where they focused on the tents before pulling out to show a wide shot of Times Square.

I remember thinking who are these crazy people camping in Times Square, now I know :)

Excellent spot. How far did you have to hike to find it?

Hi! Thanks for the comments. The night was spectacular, and I am happy if you sense the thrill of urban camping.

Amit Gupta and I are organizing an effort called Pitch Camp to encourage city people to setup campgrounds in their neighborhoods.

We chose the traffic median at 44th Street because it is a wide island right in the middle of Times Sqaure with plenty of room for our tents to sprawl. It was noisy and bright, but the LEDs replaced the stars nicely, and the skyscrapers couldn't have imitated sequoias any better. We met dozens of strangers who, whether they were just curious, drunk or lonely, were eager to strike conversation to try figuring us out.

Ten different cops tried to break us up, but we successfully talked our way through the entire night -- using excuses like "We are photographing for the North Face company" or "Waiting for TRL tickets" or "Your lieutenant said it was cool" etc. Most of them didn't give us a second look, and kept on moving.

So, we munched on apricots, napped a little, and left at sunrise.

Howdy, I started a new group, and it's starting out really slow, but I think this is a perfect example of what I'm aiming for and I'd love it if you'd not only post it but allow me to use it as the icon.

The group is called "transformative spaces" and it's all about works of art or action that change the meaning or perception of a space. Here you've turned times square into a campground as was your intent. Causing obvious reconsideration of what we consider to be proper use of an urban space.

www.flickr.com/groups/transformative-spaces/

This group is going to start out slow, because it's a tricky concept. But I love the idea and we're not in any hurry.

Feel free to invite others or reccomend other works. I could really use some partners in this project and your photo clearly demonstrates the concept so I'd be happy if you would want to join in.

Yeah, so I somehow stumbled upon your blog/flickr profile while browsing through photo editing things... and I'm really enjoying it. That picture of the woman with the flowers on her eyes really did make me smile... sort of made my day actually, and that's saying something cause I'm having a REALLY good day. Anyway, thanks for making people smile:) I'm gonna look at the rest of them now... I bet I'll find mo'betta ones repeatedly
