The only purpose of referegeration is to keep the film at a stable cool temperature. Stable is more important than cool. A desk drawer at room temperature is good enough. Infact, if you use film straight out of the fridge, you can get condensation on it, and it showes up on the photograph as little out of focus blotches. Weird.

Also note that in addition to light, photographic film - especially high speed film - is also sensitive to ambient background radiation. This exposure may cause some color shift over the years. A few months past the expiry date is no problem. If you are really particular about it, you can get lead-lined bags at Teds. They are used to get film through airport x-rays safely. For everyday storage, they are overkill.

As you can see, the late 2005 expired Superia 800 used for this photo is great. I am using some 120 film that is 10 years past its expiry date. No problems.
