小籠包 @ 鼎泰豐
NT$170/US$5.34 (for a basket of 10). Xiaolongbao. I don't care what anybody tells you, especially those haters out there who seem to want to disparage DTF just to be different, but this is the best xiaolongbao in the world. Bar none.

my dad actually is one of "those haters out there who seem to want to disparage DTF just to be different"... aaargh. so sometimes we'd go to 永康街高記... but even that one where the chef was from DTF, still tastes different!!! (>___<)

Din Tai Fung will be holding a cooking demonstration and food tasting at the Sherton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing, New York, from 11/10-11/13, and 11/16-11/20.

Thanks for the heads up. I can get the real thing here in Taipei, but my friends in NY can go. Even though the food they serve at this annual Flushing event sucks, it's still better than any xiaolongbao you can get in NY otherwise. Plus it's fun to see literally every Taiwanese person in the Tri-State area crammed into the Flushing Sheraton desperate to get a taste of home.

Well, you seem to have made up your mind, but maybe you could still give the 小籠包 at 正常鮮肉湯包 (台北市通化街57巷3號, 02-8789-1026) a try someday:
That plate right there will set you back just NT$60, by the way, so no harm done if you are not impressed.

this looks so delicious, my mouth is watering! I love how you've taken the picture with the chopsticks and gentle focus.
I will be in Taipei next week for a few days and now I know I will have to find my way over to DTF...

I am heading to Beijing in 2 days and our hotel will be 2 blocks away from DTF, so excited.

I'm so glad to have the Arcadia restaurant so close to me
mmmmmmm
yusheng (46 months ago | reply)
@asimplefarmer Hmm, actually I thought the Arcadia branch is pretty weak. But I suppose if I lived in LA, I would still go, even if it's not that good. It's better than having no DTF at all, right? But I would probably complain bitterly every time about waiting over an hour for mediocre DTF to the point where nobody would want to go there with me anymore. :P

Haha. Well like the French say: terroire. Gotta eat it where it's known to be made!
xopherlance (45 months ago | reply)
I agree with you, Yusheng. I've eaten at the DTF in Sydney and it's far superior to the Arcadia branch; alas it's still the best xiaolongbao we have in L.A. I can only imagine the flavor attack I will experience when I one day sample Taipei's offering.
yusheng (45 months ago | reply)
@xopherlance I've had DTF in HK, Tokyo and Shanghai and if the original DTF is a 10, the HK/Tokyo/Shanghai ones are 8s, whereas the Arcadia one is a 5 if I'm being generous. I just don't think the Arcadia people know what they're doing. From what I've read about DTF, the other branches throughout Asia are run by well-funded conglomerates whereas the Arcadia branch is just opened by one of the brothers of the owners who isn't even very into cooking.

That's easy to believe when one compares Arcadia to its overseas counterparts. I was actually unaware that DTF had a branch in Tsim Sha Tsui; I'll be back in HK for new year's and I'm looking forward to eating at an "8"!

I've only tried DTF in Sydney and Singapore. They're about equal in my mind (equally great, that is!). Would love to try the original some day.
