Ausfonna ice shelf calving 3311

Ausfonna ice shelf calving 3311 by Yukon White Light.
A small piece calved just as we sailed past. We didn't travel so near the face after that.

Oh, cool!
What a great colour. I love how it's striated.

The striations are years and the colours are real. The calving was very real, too!

I went and watched An Inconvenient Truth this afternoon. Quite horrifying and makes your photo even more meaningful. Great shot!

I haven't seen the film, but I understand it's very good. Climate change is a very real issue for everyone living in the North.

Global warming stinks. I can't believe you caught this on your trip by! The shot was timed perfectly, down to the second.

Crochunter, I can't believe it happened either. A small bit fell off as we were passing and I and a woman I was talking to simultaneously said the same rude word thinking we'd missed it. Then the main event occurred. I actually managed to get four separate pictures but this one is the best. Another passenger, who had his camera on continuous shots, got about eight or nine, almost a movie. It was eerie how slowly it happened. The noise was incredible.

Climate change has certainly eaten away at the extent of this ice shelf, but the calving might have been caused by the boat's bow wake, maybe?

Great shot. To get a still which shows the drama as well as this is really special.

Thanks, Richard. I really wish I could say it was all skill. The truth is that I was extraordinarily lucky.
