The kindness of strangers
I had an appointment to meet someone on Central Park West and 66th Street (essentially across the street from the famous "Tavern on the Green" restaurant), and -- as usual -- arrived half an hour early. So I sat on a park bench, and watched a wide spectrum of humanity walk, stroll, and ride past me. Tourists, students, babysitters, friends, lovers, bicycle-powered messengers, retired people, and joggers moved past me, usually paying no attention to me at all...
I had my camera on my lap, pointed more-or-less straight ahead, with the zoom set to an 18mm wide-angle setting. With a couple of exceptions (including this photo), I didn't bother aiming, focusing, or even raising the camera to my eye; if the picture looked like it might be interesting, I just pressed the shutter button at the appropriate moment.
I took three or four pictures of this man as he navigated slowly across 66th Street on Central Park West (just behind where this picture was taken), stopping every few feet to catch his breath. When he reached a tree that's just out of sight on the right side of this picture, he decided to put his arm out and rest a while longer; you can see that in the previous picture of this sequence ...
Seeing his condition, a very nice couple approached him and asked if they could help walk him to the bus-stop, which was about twenty feet further ahead (indeed, you can see the approaching bus in the background). They helped him onto the bus, and then walked away...
And, yes, I did notice the reaction of the woman on the left side of the picture: I felt that she was demonstrating the reaction that all of us would have felt if we were there, in person, to witness this little vignette of humanity...

********************,
Note: on Oct 3, 2009 I made some minor edits to this photo. Primarily,
I decreased the extent of shadows in the coat worn by the woman on the
left, so you could see more details. There were a few other "hot
spots" and "cold spots" throughout the photo that I was
able to adjust, too. And I made a modest increase in the color
saturation of the faces of all four individuals, as well as increasing
the vibrancy of non-skin-tone colors. I do think it helps to be able
to see more details of the woman's dark raincoat, but aside from that,
none of these "tweaks" are particularly germane to the main
emphasis of the photo...

It was a very, very special moment -- something you don't see in New York very often. It was all the more special because it was so spontaneous. I went up to the couple after they helped the old man get on the bus, and thanked them for the kindness they had shown; I told them I had taken some photos, gave them my card, and told them I would be happy to send them a copy of the pictures.
I couldn't tell if they were visitors/tourists, or "natives" of New York City. It didn't really matter; their helpfulness was so generous that it should be an inspiration to us all...

thank you ed. very touching and real. a wonderful snapshot of the brighter side of humanity. too bad our culture shuns feel good stories and prefers blood, gore, bernie madoff, Hollywood plastic-ness, and eviscerating capitalism as a sport.

Ed, of the shots of yours I have seen (and that is only a fraction of what is available to be seen), I really love this one. As an image it is perfect; but as a story it is priceless. All of the ingredients are present. There is nothing superfluous in the shot. The yellow cab discloses the location and there is even a little "Walk" sign near the top to reinforce the fact that this is about the ability to walk. This is street photography at its very best: simple, direct and unambiguous. Hats off to you.
Ed Yourdon (49 months ago | reply)
Thanks for the kind words. I must admit that I had not thought about the significance of the "Walk" sign -- and I will cheerfully admit that it was not something I planned, or that I consciously included in the framing and composition of the picture.
Indeed, very few of my pictures are carefully set up, planned, and framed. Instead, I consider myself an observer in a kaleidoscope of chaotic life that's taking place all around me, and all I can do is try to spot the interesting moments, and capture them with my camera before they disappear. This particular vignette, for example, only lasted about 10-15 seconds before the couple was able to help the old man get onto the bus; I was just lucky enough to have been there to observe it...

Thanks! It's not something you see very often here in New York. It's not that we're less kind than the people elsewhere (e.g., Omaha), but rather that we're typically in such a hurry that we don't pause to notice those who need just a little bit of help to make it possible for them to cope with this big, noisy city...

Cool shot. Nice to see people showing their touch of humanity in the here and now.
This photo reminds me of a chat I had with two girls from two very distinct countries: France & Ukraine. The Ukranian said that back home when a woman is carrying her shopping bag it's normal for someone to offer to help her. Our French friend replied: "Oh my God! If someone offered to help carry my bags he'd give me the creeps and I'd think he's some kind of stalker!" Cultural differences I guess. Go figure ...
I really liked this photo and used it on my weekly blog here:

Love this shot. Would like to use it to accompany a blog post titled, "Depending on the kindness of strangers" about a time when someone helped me by picking up my toddler son before he ran, unknowing, over the edge of a cement lock that had no water in it. This photo came up in my Zemanta suggestions, but it is not clear to me whether I might have permission to use it.
