tr.v., -ioned, -ion·ing, -ions.
1. To give shape or form to; make: fashioned a table from a redwood burl.
2. To train or influence into a particular state or character.
3. To adapt, as to a purpose or an occasion; accommodate.

I think this definition is the root of the noun's definition. Fashion is fashioned. It is fashioned with an individual style in approach to one's environment and the things in it, ourselves included, and a response to it all as well. Of course, many people may respond to stimuli in smilar ways, like flowers following the sun. When such a pattern emerges, be it naturally or via consumerism of mass produced culture, then we have... a fashion (trend).

Hrm. Does that make any sense? :)
